"You can't jump a jet plane like you can a freight train"...one of the great lines in folk music history. A yearning for the past and a great sense of loneliness drive this song. Lovely.

Today is a sad sad day, May 1st 2023, Gordon Lightfoot left us. What a legacy of music he left us, he brought unending happiness to my life. I cannot think of a single song of his that ever made think of anything but the best of his talent and gifts to us mere mortals. So long, thank you for the ride!

My husband is in the hospital tonight fighting for his life. Quintuple heart surgery. He went to Vietnam at age 19. He never talked much about it. Nor has he ever really talked about music. He did tell me that this was his favorite song. He heard it ALOT on the radio over there. This tells you about about him. What a great choice for a favorite song. Rest in peace Gordon.

In the early morning rain with a dollar in my hand
With an aching in my heart and my pockets full of sand
Now, I'm a long way from home and I miss my loved ones so
In the early morning rain with no place to go
Out on runway number nine a big 707's set to go
But, I'm stuck here in the grass where the cold wind blows
Now, the liquor tasted good and the women all were fast
Well, there she goes, my friend, well she's going down at last
Hear the mighty engines roar - see the silver bird on high
She's away and westward bound - far above the clouds she'll fly
There the morning rain don't fall and the sun always shines
She'll be flying over my home in about three hours time
This old airport's got me down - it's no earthly good to me
'cause I'm stuck here on the ground as cold and drunk as I can be
You can't jump a jet plane like you can a freight train
So, I'd best be on my way in the early morning rain
You can't jump a jet plane like you can a freight train
So, I'd best be on my way in the early morning rain

Many times the morning mist/dew would be buring off as they rumbled off in the distance. So poignant... alone , young, strange surroundings, for a year i lived in that room watching those jets. When we vacationed in Canada, it was a long ride home. I was lucky enough to find a documentary on a Candadian PBS-type station that was broadcasing Gordon Lightfoot and I prayed it wouldn't fade out on me. My daughter, who wasn't as into music as my son, was traveling with me. She was about four. She'd nod off; wake up, read a book, go back to sleep and finally said, "Will they ever stop talking about Gordon Lightfoot?" She hadn't, to my knowledge, ever paid any attention to my albums by him. I said, "Do you know who he is?" and in a rather glum voice, she said, "How could I miss? You play his album all the time. My favorite is the one about the early morning train." At that, she went back to sleep. And here I thought she didn't pay any attention to the music I played!

His signature song. One of my fave songs ever.
In 1995 I took my Lightfoot album called "Lightfoot" to Sam The Record Man in Toronto and he signed it for me. I said that I was a Dylan fan and had all of Dylan's records. I asked him if he got to see Dylan anymore and he said yes. I then realized that probably was a mistake and said that I had all his records also 🙂.
As I walked away he raised his hands up high and looking at me said "Dylan's the greatest" and smiled. Everybody next in line, including me although somewhat embarrassed, started laughing 😃.
I will never forget that moment in time....Lone Wolf :)

It’s fascinating watching Gordon Lightfoot work. His tonal control and variance makes him a singer’s singer. Giving that kind of effort and producing that kind of unique sound distinguishes him as a vocalist and makes him the man to listen to, to watch and learn from. Thank you Gordon.

      Sorry pal.
I've studied music longer than you've been alive.
Gordie had a mediocre voice by any standard of measure. That's reality. You seem to live in a "detached reality".
      Huge difference.

The greatest song ever about being down & out and lonely. And doing it in a major key!, which along with “So I best be on my way…” leaves you with a faint glimmer of hope instead of the easy ‘just shoot me’ vibe.
    RIP Gordon.

I grew up in Detroit. Gordon had a real affinity with the city. We used to go see him all the time, sometimes in Windsor. He wasn’t famous at the beginning. He used to play at the university in Windsor and in coffee houses in Detroit. Then, he was famous and played at big venues but we all still went to see him.

Comparing this to his live tv version in '69 is interesting. He never lost the vibrato, it's essentially the singing style of the early 60's folk scene. Yet no one sounds like Gord.

I know P. P. & M. did it well too, but ELVIS certainly deserves a mention. RIP Gordon, you'll be missed as is my one and only ELVIS...😥🙏⚡️💜

If you can find his early recordings from Canada they're worth listening to. He used to sing in a very classical vocalist's fashio.Very old fashioned and melodic with a lot of very good tremolo. I'm a pretty accomplished guitarist now but the only lesson I ever had from a teacher was to learn how to finger pick so I could sing this great song!
