I have to be careful where and when I listen to Gordon Lightfoot! Anyone of his songs can burst me into spontaneous tears! Rarely tears of sadness .... rather tears of deep Beauty.... Beauty too deep to hold without crying .... Thank-you Gordon. Your life is what it looks like to live a spiritual/creative life.....doing what you were born to do. You are an inspiration..... I see that it is not an easy path to live but, one that can bring such Beauty into the world.

Many years ago when I was just a little boy and barely up off the floor Gords truck, I think it was, broke down in front our farm on the hwy 11 late at night. Gordon came in to use the phone but being so late he ended up staying for several hrs playing music with my mom and dad. My dad played the fiddle and my mom sang, they had a band so many years ago that played in a few local spots in the area.. I sat and listened to Gordon all night and has been one of my all time favorites ever since. Rest in peace Gordon.
What an amazing memory. I picked up a hitchiker in Gallup,New Mexico in 1978. I only gave him a ride because he was carrying a backpack & guitar. He played & sang many songs, my favorite being 'City of New Orleans'. That is also a wonderful memory! 😊

We buried my Dad yesterday. I grew up listening to Gordon Lightfoot as my Dad had his original records. These songs teleport me back to my youth sitting with my Dad in the mountains of Colorado watching a fire, playing cards, or being present as the snow fell. Miss him, but these songs will always remind me of him.
As a songwriter I find it amazing that Gordon can get away with being so honest about his experience as a young man in the 1960s and 1970s. I think most writers are inclined to write safe, happy stories, but Gord is so honest. Really he is often just painting pictures of the human experience, even very sad ones, just to get them out. Gord is fully aware of his brutal honesty in his songs, that why they often have this peculiar mix of self-loathing and faith in his own instincts. Example, in "For lovin' me," we hear lyrics about him asserting "All you'll get for loving me is losing everything you had." He even seems to note cruelly, "There you go crying again-" but at the end of that phrase he has this optimistic and self-understanding line, "but then one day when your poor heart is on the mend, I just might pass this way again." As in, you can only Love me at a distance, not fully because i'm afraid to be vulnerable enough to Love that deeply. I'm not sure if he's conscious or not of that emotional malady... Sounds like this song was his way of grasping it, objectifying it so he could see it. Any young man gets where that song is at. It so strangely healing to hear someone going through what you are, and subtly pointing at the way out, but also that he himself struggles to go there, to love that deeply, because he has "1000 more women to ge tthrough..." which he seems to be using to defend himself against the cathartic realization he can't admit. Such a strange self-awareness from the position of one struggling. Many of his songs have this raw honesty, its like listening to a larvae struggle to come out of a coccoon, and documenting each and every painful stab very intimately and relatably.
I emigrated to Canada in 1967 had a guitar strapped to my back but couldn't play it. Found one of Gordon's song books in a store with all the chords shown. Sat down and learned to play every song in that book. Spent many an evening sitting on the front porch singing and drinking with my fellow house guests. Still playing to this day and it's all thanks to Gordon's song book. I owe you Gordon and so does everyone who has enjoyed my playing over the years. Rest in peace, be seeing you soon.
Gordon Lightfoot was, arguably, the finest singer/songwriter to ever grace a stage. For some of you, that might be a bold statement but I have rich musical evidence to work with. His musical legacy is found in his sweet melodic love songs, his plaintive ballads and towering anthems, Lightfoot was recognized by his peers as a force of elegant melody and word. He was a rogue storyteller in the cloak of a modern day minstrel. Few, if any, had his range which could go from the intimacy of a song like 'Beautiful' to his great anthem to the mariner 'Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' or find the scope that he demonstrated with the misty 'Bitter Green' versus the universal and powerfully relevant 'Black Day in July'. There's the story of a broken man's plaintive plea for home all ex-pats feel in 'Early Morning Rain'. And in the epic tale 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy' he crystalized the Canadian Dream. Most significantly and crucial, he taught us the way to sing about our nation something that was sorely lacking in the character of a citizenry intimidated by its southern neighbours. And that was his greatest gift to all born in this vast wild country we call Canada. That alone would have been enough for one man. May you Rest In Peace Gordon, forever playing a six string.
I can only stack him up against guys like Micheal Jackson (a pure talent) and very very short select list of others.. but there are some things as you have stated here about Gord that are literally untouchables. Unlikely to experience this kind of talent again in my lifetime at 47 yrs old. Indeed. Gord's gold will shine on.
I'm from the southern USA. A town near Nashville TN but my two favorite singer song/writers are Canadian, Neil Young and Gordon Lightfoot. My favorite singer/drummer played in a Canadian band, Levon Helm from AR.

Despite our differences, many of us here in the States have appreciated and admired our fine neighbours to our north for a very long time, and have always embraced and respected your autonomy as the sovereign and independent nation that you are. I have visited your incredibly beautiful country many times and have always returned home feeling blessed to have been there and dreaming of my next visit. Gordon didn't just produce an album entitled "Gord's Gold". He indeed was the gold, and always will be - a national treasure of yours, if I may say so. May his music, memory and incalculable influence on Canadian culture live on forever. Thank you for articulating Gordon's legacy to Canada so beautifully and honorably.

L. , fortunately, was a real man-an artist, moreover, who struggled with the vagaries of living a creative life in a commercial, pop-music world and came out well ahead in the end. Listening this morning and remembering how I was more likely to be hearing Gord on an 8 track player in the truck than headphones. Hearing so much more and feeling humbled. We have lost a great one. 😢
He was 13 years old when was a new born. I was first introduced to his music when I arrived in Toronto in 1974. His songs are still so alive in my heart of youthful years.
My girlfriend gave me my first Gordon Lightfoot album "If You Could Read My Mind" in 1971. As a guitarist and musician, I have loved his music ever since. Finally got to see him live nearly 30 years later in 2000. One of the world's best songsmiths.
I fell in love with Gordon Lightfoot when I was a teenager. His brilliantly crafted songs moved me. One of the first songs I learned to play on guitar was "Pussywillows, Cat Tails". I was and always will be a huge fan of his. RIP Gordon. Thank you for the music.

Listening to his songs today, lots of memories and images with friends and family over the decades. Growing up in Ontario in the '70s, '80s, '90s... his music was literally everywhere, like maple leaves and the Canadian Shield. So many images coming up, like a photo album from my life, and I'm sure many, many others.
My father was in the Coast Guard and was often out on his ship for weeks at a time. When he came home, me and my brothers would look forward to lazy Saturdays and Sundays hanging out with Dad and listening to music he had on this amazing reel-to-reel tape player he had. The Eagles, Three Dog Night, Karen Carpenter, so many great artists. When Gordon Lightfoots song came on, it was The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I remember my father would sit there and listen to that song with such sadness. It made such an impression on me. Its one of the most beautiful and haunting songs I have ever heard.
I can absolutely relate with you Suzanne, even now in 2021, I am listening to all of this Classic Music of the 70's that I recorded on to my Huge Reel to Reels....I have the last 4 of the top models made, 2 of them are the Auto-Reverse.....Akai and TEAC.....nothing like the sound of Open Reel Tapes from Top Machines!!

Had the great pleasure to be in the audience, mid 80's, when he played Massey Hall. I'll never forget when he asked audience members to request songs. A young boy approached , a piece of paper in his hand asking him to do Pony Man. And, he did. Magical for me. Little did I know, the lady I was holding hands then with would inspire our very own version of "If You Read My Mind" some time later. Like Gordon also said " Bitter sweet". I'll miss him.
I have never listened to a Gordon Lightfoot album. I always liked his stuff but I never knew his music is THIS GOOD. Dead or alive his music IS so long as we listen.

He's huge in Canada but less in the U.S. because he's Canadian. It was a really big deal back in the day. Still is for some great Canadian bands that should be mainstream in the U.S. I'm in Detroit and get lots of great radio out of Windsor, Ontario, Canada! He's only playing in Canada every now and then and can barely sing but you're right he IS still showing up! Awesomeness!!!
I discovered Gordon in 1970. He became my favorite singer. "If you could read my mind" is my favorite of all times, but he had so many great songs and this list is far from complete.
I was introduced to Gordon's music by a DJ on uk radio in 1976 featuring his Sundown album. This has been my favourite album and track ever since. Have been fortunate to see him in concert in 1980 and again 2016, unfortunately his voice lets him down now - but that's hardly surprising considering his age!
I realized that I needed to get divorced after listening to "If You Could Read My Mind." Things were going bad and getting worse.... the song hit the nail on the head.
RIP Gordon...your voice, your songs, your storytelling will carry on forever. Listening to your music in honor of a great folk singer. We took our children to the Edmund Fitzgerald museum and prior to it on our way played the song in our car.... They now have that as a memory, too. God bless you!!!

By far, my most favorite concert I have ever been to was simply Gordon Lightfoot sitting on a stool with his guitar at Red Rocks amphitheater, Colorado. Beautiful sounds, beautiful night.

Just after being married, back in '73, had a neighbor apartment lady who borrowed a cup of sugar, had two beautiful kids and was out to make her way with her Gibson and a lovely voice. I'll never forget Barbara and her talent and fail to wonder whatever became of her dreams. She was the ultimate Gordon Lightfoot acolyte and she wasn't wrong.

My favourite Lightfoot song is "If You Could Read My Mind", which was released by Reprise in 1970, as SIT DOWN YOUNG STRANGER. A d. j. started playing the song, to great response. Consequently, Reprise changed the album title to IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND. The album was a big breakthrough for Gordon, and went to #5 on Billboard. The album also included "Me and Bobbie McGee", which was later a big hit for the late Janis Joplin, and was written by Kris Kristofferson, whom I saw 20 years ago, another great song writer. - Peter

I can only stack him up against guys like Micheal Jackson (a pure talent) and very very short select list of others.. but there are some things as you have stated here about Gord that are literally untouchables. Unlikely to experience this kind of talent again in my lifetime at 47 yrs old.

Despite our differences, many of us here in the States have appreciated and admired our fine neighbours to our north for a very long time, and have always embraced and respected your autonomy as the sovereign and independent nation that you are. I have visited your incredibly beautiful country many times and have always returned home feeling blessed to have been there and dreaming of my next visit.

He was 13 years old when was a new born. I was first introduced to his music when I arrived in Toronto in 1974. His songs are still so alive in my heart of youthful years.
My girlfriend gave me my first Gordon Lightfoot album "If You Could Read My Mind" in 1971. As a guitarist and musician, I have loved his music ever since. Finally got to see him live nearly 30 years later in 2000. One of the world's best songsmiths.

Listening to his songs today, lots of memories and images with friends and family over the decades. Growing up in Ontario in the '70s, '80s, '90s... his music was literally everywhere, like maple leaves and the Canadian Shield. So many images coming up, like a photo album from my life, and I'm sure many, many others.

My father was in the Coast Guard and was often out on his ship for weeks at a time. When he came home, me and my brothers would look forward to lazy Saturdays and Sundays hanging out with Dad and listening to music he had on this amazing reel-to-reel tape player he had. The Eagles, Three Dog Night, Karen Carpenter, so many great artists. When Gordon Lightfoots song came on, it was The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I remember my father would sit there and listen to that song with such sadness. It made such an impression on me. Its one of the most beautiful and haunting songs I have ever heard.

Had the great pleasure to be in the audience, mid 80's, when he played Massey Hall. I'll never forget when he asked audience members to request songs.
A young boy approached , a piece of paper in his hand asking him to do Pony Man. And, he did. Magical for me. Little did I know, the lady I was holding hands then with would inspire our very own version of "If You Read My Mind" some time later.

He's huge in Canada but less in the U.S. because he's Canadian. It was a really big deal back in the day. Still is for some great Canadian bands that should be mainstream in the U.S. I'm in Detroit and get lots of great radio out of Windsor, Ontario, Canada! He's only playing in Canada every now and then and can barely sing but you're right he IS still showing up! Awesomeness!!!

I discovered Gordon in 1970. He became my favorite singer. "If you could read my mind" is my favorite of all times, but he had so many great songs and this list is far from complete.
I was introduced to him in 1966 by a college hall mate. It was Gordon's first LP. Saw him later at Saratoga PAC while in New York State.
I heard the music on a radio which played classic 60s songs quite recently and have to Soundhound it because it is that beautiful.
I was introduced to Gordon's music by a DJ on uk radio in 1976 featuring his Sundown album. This has been my favourite album and track ever since. Have been fortunate to see him in concert in 1980 and again 2016, unfortunately his voice lets him down now - but that's hardly surprising considering his age!
I realized that I needed to get divorced after listening to "If You Could Read My Mind." Things were going bad and getting worse.... the song hit the nail on the head.
RIP Gordon...your voice, your songs, your storytelling will carry on forever. Listening to your music in honor of a great folk singer. We took our children to the Edmund Fitzgerald museum and prior to it on our way played the song in our car.... They now have that as a memory, too. God bless you!!!

Just after being married, back in '73, had a neighbor apartment lady who borrowed a cup of sugar, had two beautiful kids and was out to make her way with her Gibson and a lovely voice. I'll never forget Barbara and her talent and fail to wonder whatever became of her dreams. She was the ultimate Gordon Lightfoot acolyte and she wasn't wrong.

My favourite Lightfoot song is "If You Could Read My Mind", which was released by Reprise in 1970, as SIT DOWN YOUNG STRANGER. A d. j. started playing the song, to great response. Consequently, Reprise changed the album title to IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND. The album was a big breakthrough for Gordon, and went to #5 on Billboard. The album also included "Me and Bobbie McGee", which was later a big hit for the late Janis Joplin, and was written by Kris Kristofferson, whom I saw 20 years ago, another great song writer. - Peter
