We will point out that there are a number of produce stands, in every town in Panama, that helps support local and tends to be a bit fresher, we strongly suggest looking for them when you come down. But are there any items we didn’t cover that you’re interested in the availability or cost of? Let us know in the comments here and we’ll do our best to answer. 🙂
@@mickeyandres2651 Yeah there are some really great food stands all around for sure, we might just have to feature some of those to give everyone an idea in an upcoming video!
There is also a fresh seafood stand right behind rays as well as El machetazo which is across the street from Rays and is like a Walmart. Great video! We are from Alberta too!!!
Yeah, some really great food stands all around the area for sure! We are probably going to feature them and the marketing in Gorgana in an upcoming video so keep a look out for that! Also, always good to see a fellow Albertan following our journey! Hope you enjoy the videos 🙂
Another informative video. El Rey was our "go to" for shopping when we were in Panama. It was a bit surprising to see how much you got for $100. As you say, it would be interesting to feature local produce stands, maybe in a future video. Great job you two!
Yeah, it's hard to get out of those big box stores sometimes, but definitely important to support local. The produce is fresher, local and the prices can be even better at times!
a quick tip its better to order the meats and chickens at the butcher section instead of buying them in those plastic bags and when it comes to cheese ask for queso cremoso next time and you will taste one of the best yellow cheese ever for hamburgers, sandwich etc...
Nice tour of El Rey. It's a great store. We do most of our "staple" shopping at Price Smart which is a trip about every 2 months. What Rey is great for is specialty kinds of foods. If one goes to the street vendors or farmer's market, one can can get great local veggies. In El Valle, they have a great farmers market, so lots of local produce. Same in Boquete area with the local Gringo market every Tue, fresh produce.
Hey man there is a riba smith in Coronado too, in the other side of the road of el Rey heading away from Panama City. Riba smith is definitely the one you will find more American products, even Frosted Flakes
Yes, the produce stands are certainly cheaper and can be fresher. We just wanted to showcase the one stop shop expectations, that many expats would be familiar with. But thanks for adding that, definitely a good point to bring up! 🙂🙌
Thanks Gregorious! We were a bit surprised at what we were able to get for $100 actually! Went a little further than we were anticipating to be honest haha
Hey Aure! Thanks for subscribing and welcome to the fam of vicarious travelers! 🙌 Much more on the way, we'll continue to show you just how far $100 can stretch in other countries coming soon!
Yes for sure, and you'll often find their produce stands all over the place. They can also be a lot fresher and supporting local, so we would strongly recommend going to the local farmer stands and markets. We were mostly just trying to show average prices in a one stop shop for all things common
We are from Canada too we would like to spend the winter months there but we prefer close to beach we been thinking of David or penonome or chitri but we still thinking as you from Canada too we might contact you thanks for your video well done...
Ah that’s great! We heard really good things of the David and Bouquete areas, but we didn’t get to see that much of it apart from driving though. Coronado was a very awesome area though! Expat friendly for sure, central to so many things! We also really enjoyed Anton Valley, which wasn’t far from Coronado at all. If you have any question, feel free to check out our Facebook and instagram pages, where we can communicate more directly as well! 🙂🙌
We're in the process of moving to Altos del Maria next month (cooler mountain community just 20 min up the road), and it's wild to see you guys shopping in what will be our "local" store - we were just in there a few weeks ago! Given the rate at which Coronado is growing, I really wouldn't be surprised to see a Pricesmart (which merged with Costco in 1993, but keeps the brand for Caribbean operations) open there within another year or two. Coronado is a "sprawl" location (no real "city center"), but certainly has LOTS to offer!
Ah that's so cool, best wishes to you on the new home! We hope it's a smooth transition for ya! Being we're from Western Canada, we definitely can appreciate cooler mountain towns, we specifically like the town of El Valle. We also agree, Coronado is a very spread out community with no real "downtown" just the shopping centres at the entrance. Which we can certainly see the appeal for some, but is an important fact to note. Thanks for reaching out! 🙂🙌
@@KyleJess - A town inside a crater? El Valle is totally awesome! There's a back road in Altos that puts it just 20 minutes away (a wild ride, but functional!), which is why we chose the spot we did - El Valle or Coronado in ~the same time... and Panama City is 30 minutes closer (on a "good" day). Hope to see you guys one day - keep havin' a BLAST!
Interesting vid. How long did that super last you. One paw of ground beef, chicken an fish won't last more that a few days if you eat lunch and dinner. Second, tax is added at the check out. Most thing that you bought don't carry tax but the cleaning supplies, toilet paper etc does. You skipped booze, that has big tax on it.
Haha yes, we did skip the alcohol tax. We mostly tried to cover as well-rounded of a shop as we could to give everyone an idea of the average costs one can expect. But that lasted us probably about a week and a half to two weeks or so. 🙂
@@KyleJess just to give you an idea how expensive Panamá is. I'm in Ibiza, the most expensive area of Spain. One liter of milk here is just over a dollar. In Panama i paid 1.60 back in June.
@@nickschalin6594 Wow! Of all the reasons to go to Spain, Ibiza specifically, you just added another reason to that long list haha! We would love to go to Spain in the relative near future (Year or two). The Mediterranean as a whole is an absolute must see for us! Thanks for sharing 🙌
@@Coco-df4en Hey Co co, we are actually planning on sharing a closer look at one of the local markets in Gorgona in an upcoming video, so be sure to hit subscribe and the bell so you don't miss that one! Will be out shortly
We'd say it totally depends on what you're looking for. From our experience, Coronado is an amazing expat community with all the amenities you could need or want with lots to do and very central to the rest of the country, so Corondo would be at the top of our list for sure. 🙂
To be honest, we Airbnb’d while there. But from what we had heard, you’d want at least double that to find a decent condo in Coronado for monthly rent, some even a little more. But you could find a reasonable studio or 1 bedroom apartment for about $1000 per month there.
In David, you can find a nice place for the lower end of your budget. In Panamá City, beaches, or the mountain areas, it will be closer to the top end of your budget.
A nice informative video, thanks. That works in Panama or Ecuador where u dont have to pay foreign income or pension taxes. In most other countries, if u want to retire u have to pay foreign income taxes tax. So , even if some things r more expensive in Panama, i think over a year u can safe more in Panama or Ecuador. Take care u "Spooks".
As far as we know, it was actually the Panama Canal that was co-owned with the US, not the entire country, and that was up until the end of 1999 like you said. But yeah, a cool and interesting fact for sure, that we maybe should have included in the video, thanks for pointing that out! 🙂🙌
We haven't been there for a few months actually, but as far as we understand they've lifted those. They weren't required everywhere and not always enforced while we were there though. Hope that helps! 🙂
Haha 100%, they actually had an eye on us and were kinda following us around the entire time we were there. So we had to be like Mr. Deeds butler, very very sneaky 😆
They actually just dropped the mask mandates throughout the country, so you are in luck man. We are now in Costa Rica, where it's gotten even more relaxed with the restrictions! So if the lax approach to the restrictions and regulations is what you're looking for man, Central America could be the place to start looking! 🙂🙌🇨🇷🇵🇦
Suppose it depends on where you’re coming from. Coming from Western Canada, almost half the price we were used to. Coming from other countries, I’m sure it could be quite pricey. There are amazing local markets and fruit stands to get better rates on produce and other foods, however we wanted to offer something that could be consistently expected across the country. Market prices tend to vary quite a bit, the grocery store chains a little more consistent. So that would be our suggestion if shopping in the area and wanna save, check out the local markets and produce stands in your area 🙂🙌🇵🇦
Good morning, Kyle Roberto Duran face and Jenn.😊 El Rey is a fantastic supermarket in Coronado, but you will pay A LOT MORE for imported frozen goods and American products. Try to buy local. For your vegetables and fruits go to the fruit stands along the Panamerican Highway and do business with the less fortunate folks....you will be supporting their families and building good relationships with very GOOD and LOVING Panamanians. El Rey was founded by a multimillionaire Greek family called Taguropolus, and they recently sold the chain, I was told. They have waaaaaaay too much money. Do not even set foot in a SUPER 99 that is owned by the Martinelli THIEVES that ALL belong in jail. If you want to leave Coronado tonight and to to an EXCELLENT restaurant, I recommend "LOS CAMISONES" - The Chef there used to work for my grandmother in Panama City. We first visited the restaurant in 1989 with others who recommended the great food. They were correct. Food was great. Lobster croquettes...yummy...mahi mahi white sauce with shrimp .. exceptional. The service was great and the atmosphere really very pleasant. We took other friends there the week after. A real seafood gem. Have a FUN and SAFE Saturday. VIVA PANAMA - BTW - Maggi ketchup is delicious - it's sweet tasting (unless you purchase the picante variety) Cafe Duran sux. Next time buy Cafe Sitton. "NO PULP MEANS MINIMAL PULP, HERE" - LMAO!!! Kyle you are HILARIOUS!!!!! bwahahahhahhahahahha
