  • Earlier in February a truck went through Pickerel Lake in Bayfield in northern Wisconsin. Due do ice and weather conditions the recovery had to wait until today. The truck ended up in about 40 feet of water on it's side. The crews had to use airbags to aid in the recovery efforts, as the truck also sunk halfway in the muddy button. Luckily the driver was able to escape without injuries. The recovery team, along with the diving team had their work cutout for them. It was a long hard recovery for both of the teams. At the end of the day, the recovery was successful.

That was interesting to watch. It looks like the crew has done that kind of recovery in the past with lots of practice. My wife and I visited Bayfield, WI about 10 years ago in May the weekend before Memorial Day. We really enjoyed ourselves, stayed in the Harbor's Edge Motel (the only guests), took a boat tour of the Apostle Islands and Madeline Island and made some instant friends in a bar (Rain-something?) because I took a picture of a guy's license plate on his blue Mercury Bobcat that said "NOPINTO" that was parked on the street right outside the bar. The guy came out and said that he normally charges for pictures of his car. We settled on a couple of beers and when everyone found out that we were from Alaska, we couldn't buy anymore beers. It was a friendly group of about 7 or 8 people.

I wonder how much that little evolution cost? Probably more than the truck itself. Glad to hear someone got it working again.

In 40' of water between $10,000 and $15,000. And typically that states Environmental Department will slap on another fine that can either be a flat fine, or a per day fine. Some flat fines I have seen are between $5000 and $10,000 and per days fines running from $250 to $1000 each day. If the vehicle goes through ice on a body of water regulated by the Coast Guard, they will typically hit the owner with a $10,000 to $12,000 fine. So yeah, an owner could be looking at a $40,000 bill. Plus if the owner had a loan on the vehicle, the bank is going to call in the loan, because the collateral for the loan was destroyed. If the vehicle insurance company refuses to pay for the loss because someone was stupid enough to drive on the ice, then the owner has to come up with that payoff pretty quick too.

@@MikeYurbasovich we get a lot of that from New Jersey and New York. Apparently they know how to drive a car best way and always say something if you take your time and stay at posted speed limit. Also, that extra space we like to leave behind another vehicle is somehow interpreted as a free gift for them to enter. Just for the record, there is no such thing in southern states that makes us give the other car priority in merging lanes from an entrance line on to main road.

    • @MikeYurbasovich

@notyou6950 I don't get new jersey drivers here much, but I see New York plates here and have learned to avoid them, they drive like the Chicago people as well. I see them rolled over in the ditch from time to time during winter months, thinking their land rover allows them to drive 80 on icy and snowy roads.

@@notyou6950 actually, they have taken trains on the ice! A large engine weight 500,000# and that’s just the engine. It all depends on how cold it is and how long it’s been cold. And you can’t have any running water to weaken areas. Myself, I’d never take a motor vehicle on ice either, but!
