Ok, I said it when I bought my first AN1X back in the 90s and I say it again. Yamaha is constantly surprising me and Iove their professional audio products! Appreciating Yamahas after market service as well.
MODX seems like the best value for money synth on the market and especially now. It sounds great and it truly is a workstation with this update. Thx for the video Bo.
I didn't even know this was coming! I just purchased the MODX7 two days ago, and now a sequencer is in the update! This keyboard just got more cool points.
I really appreciate you starting off the video by saying how great it is that a company is supporting their existing products with feature updates. It truly is something we need to see more of. I was just responding to a comment on another video from someone who was "disappointed" that Yamaha released this update instead of making a CS-80 re-issue... WTF?
Thank you for your tutorial. I rmember watching you some while ago and learning from you. I did indeed manage to make my own pattern sequence, however there is a pretty big problem with all of this, and i'm sure you have come across this yourself. It is indeed a great idea to be able to record your own sequences, which I have done, not only with this machine but others too. This one is a tad more complicated even when you know exactly how to do it. Straight away the problem comes up where I have to link the pattern with the performance name, and no matter how many times anyone tries this, somewhere down the line they are going to get really frustrated and lose all of there work. The performance name is no problem, but then you link it to a pattern, 1 is already filled, so is 2, pattern 3 is completely empty, however when you try to link it decides to choose pattern 10 and not 3 or 4,5,6,7,8 or even 9, they get completely missed and possibly wasted which is something we don't want as we only have limited spaces. While I was frustratingly trying to place something into pattern 3, just as you did, I forgot to link and somehow lost my pattern inside the machine somewhere, when I did find it, it was maybe in position 10 again. The Roland FA06 is much staright forward in doing this and so much quicker too as are some of my other Keyboard/Synths. In order to record just one simple part on one track for a few seconds you have to go through many unessesary parameters and settings, if you accidentally forget just one then you are left scratching your head trying to fathom out at what point you madethe mistake. The Idea of a sequencer is really to get your ideas down quickly, in yet the MODX has come up with something that completely slows you down leaving you a little stressed and frustrated to the point of giving up or maybe using a completely different Synth altogether. This is not your fault I know and I can see that you have done a lot of hard work here, but I do wonder why Yamaha have made something that is prone to you making mistakes, especially when we have already learnt how to use something over and over and just simply want to make music and not spending most of that time programming. Anyhow, well done for the Tutorial and once again thank you. Best Wishes Geoff
exactly my thoughts. on my quest to a decent keyboard with really quick multitrack recording to store ideas and flesh them out a bit before transferring to DAW I've come across the yamaha system (QY70, QY700, now MODX) and can't believe how frustratingly inefficient this system works, unchanged since the 90ies.
This is the problem i did struggle with as well.. changing patterns .. what i dont understand is. Yamaha only added this sequencer due to huge amount of customer requests, so they obviously didnt want to add one at first, as they are trying to push Cubase ... so Why make this messy confusion of a sequencer, why didnt Yamaha just use an updated version of the Motif XF sequencer
Even before this update the MODX was one of the best keyboards I have purchased in a long time. Very inspirational instrument for so little cash, a must for every studio.
Nicolas Arianos you just can’t beat the Modx for the price it is just as good and some way better than the new Fantom at half the price. I know because I have both.
Thanks BoBeats, this is an excellent video. I was so put off by the idea of creating a song in different parts (scenes) and pushing buttons to move between them but now that I see it's possible to create a chain of these scenes and then play the scene, that changes my whole opinion. I'm supposing it's possible to include a scene several times in a chain, ex verse, chorus, verse, chorus etc.....
Thank you for creating an important video. As a new synthesizer user, I found that updates move good gear to very good or excellent status. Quality manuals and tutorials, however, make any product stand out by reducing the learning curve.
First Yamaha synth ever after 30 yrs of playing. I'm growing to like this MODX....slowly as it has so much to learn. Thanks for the help with that Bo. Look forward to updating the OS soon.
EXACTLY the overview, instruction, and clarification I needed! You could not have done a better job for me if this was a direct personal response to the questions I had. Watched this video and was creating performances and tracks in minutes. Thank you very much.
finally, after years of complaints, yamaha puts a proper sequencer on their workstation/synths, like they did before. i wish they fire the people who refused to have it om the montage and modx at launch.
I don't get it... Mine is with 1.0 firmware version yet(just bought it yesterday) and it does has a sequencer, just press REC button and it shows the 16 tracks... Why people say Modx has no built in sequencer???
Thank you for creating this video and much respect to you and your expertise. Don’t take this as negative criticism. Firstly, I thought that you good job highlighting the points of this keyboard I thought you did a not so good job on the introduction of it and the very beginning process. I don’t understand why you did not explain step-by-step from the very beginning? For somebody that’s really new to the idea of a sequencer or new to the MODX, it would be more confusing for them to start out in the middle. And then backtrack on the process. Step-by-step from the very beginning with a bad idea. Again, thank you for putting this out and much respect! 🙏
This fixes the one thing I thought was missing from the original version. It seems like a very nice update. Could certainly be improved though, if the sequencer had more visualization and note-editing functions to let people see and edit the note data. Also perhaps notable is the new wave folder. If that does what I think it does, it's one of my favorite synth algorithms. Not that this instrument had any shortage of good sounds already... but still.
Great video...I didnt realize 2.0 was out so I downloaded, backed up my data, installed the update, restored my data and now I'm recording tracks with different scenes. I can use the scenes to switch from intro part of the song to verse to chorus and eventual to outro. I could not find a way to do this with the early versions of the software. Thanks so much!
One cool thing is having 3 or 4 drum kits and playing different instruments on each, with some overlapping and use mute or the faders to perform with them once you’ve created your tracks. I do it with the OS.1, this is going to save me hours aaaand allow for way more things, tracks 9-16, Play FX... it’s great Yamaha has keeped up with the times and users feedback. I was staring to have mixed feelings with my MODX. No more ^_^ now I’m REALLY glad !!
Thanks for this Bo. I’m a long time Yamaha user motif and qy700, but found it difficult when I tried to use this for the first time on Montage yesterday,so this is very useful😊
Dude, you should do a video series on how and what this board can do. I am a learning musician and would like to have an in depth on using this board. I would pay for something like that. By the way, great video.
Mike A I love it, has so much potential and you can’t go wrong with the Montage or MODX. A beast in content and an enjoyable learning curve that’s a can do, approach. It’s very satisfying to play and get lost in it for hours.
Thanks, I would like to do that, plenty of others putting great content out already, the only thing is, I don’t think I am ready for that task yet. I’d rather keep going over it because it is a lot to keep in mind. As much as I’d like to, I don’t think I could do it justice beyond what is already out there due to the fact that even tho I have had the board awhile now, I kinda got it to early since I was still grasping the Elektron workflow and terminology at that time back in December. Now with the update, I need to get my hands on it first. The new system should be a whole easier to build full songs outside a PC. Bo is always good at covering what you need to be able to function on it. He has a lot more time than I have since I only returned to music after my service this year.
Very good demo...I'm pleased they are adding this, as perhaps one of the reasons I hadn't already bought one... I don't know, I still lean towards an Fa 08.. It just seems so simple.... But the modx sounds awesome..... 🙂
The sequencer was a tipping point for a lot of people on this beastie.. Hopefully they'll add more features to it in future updates so I can give my poor old SY85 a rest (and an overhaul).
Thanks B(r)o, just saw your video few hours ago and it helped me so much to push myself to start working with the sequencer ... thought it doesn't give me the right workflow ... but it does. Thank you so much ... I NEED MORE SCENE-BUTTONS NOW !!! CAN'T STOP !!! :-)))
I'm using a Yamaha DJ x great machine but it's not got a sequencer it haves a function for recording over six different channels which it's handy you can make some killer tracks on it but have to hand play every thing...if it had a sequencer it would be a great work station
Electric Images Australia you can record part of a song (intro, chorus, outro etc..) separetely and set these parts in a scene that you can call while listening to the music at a touch of a button. A traditional sequencer is linear, a pattern sequencer allows you to create blocks of music.
Oh. It didn't have a sequencer until now? ;) Judging from your video, it's quite capable, but also has a user interface which totally gets in your way. Which is kind of ironic, because "workstation synths" were meant to be the center of your studio, an alternative to using a DAW. Yet, I don't know any workstation which has a really great sequencer. (The MODX does sound great and has a lot of other things going for it). Anyway, thanks for this video, Bo. Great music and great presentation, as always.
@@BoBeats Didn't use any Akai Pro device, but I think that all their most recent gear also has good Ux. They provide *piano-roll* mode sequencer, If I well remember . Waiting for a company that will produce a *piano-roll* style hardware sequencer. One-purpose device. A big touch screen, some hw control and that's it. ( no computer mess and no Squarp pyramid super complicated workflow / narrow screen. ) =)
@@BoBeats You mean slow? Switch off the animation and blur in the settings menu. Or you ment something else on it? PS. I think you mean it's little bit like a labirynth. Agree.
Looks great. A good reason to buy this as you central piece of gear in the studio- master keyboard and sequencer now. I remember when I recorded a whole album using my w30 workstation sequencer. This is so much easier to see what you're doing!
This type of sequencer may seems weird for people with experience from another synth/workstation platforms, but it's more productive for songwriting than classic linear type of sequencer. Typically, most of pop/rock/jazz songs has structure defined by intro, verses, choruses, bridges, maybe variation/modulation of these, and ending section. If I can write a song, I don't need remember, that my first verse is on 9th measure, chorus started on 17th, bridge is on 33 ... I can simply create pattern for every song section, and finally chain these components to song. Quick, easy and smart. Add or remove one chorus at the end is now really easy intuitive job, not math task with copy/paste/erase ... And, if I miss the note and correct it in one of sections, it will be reflected on the all sections of the same type in the song. Not every musician is a scientist ... most of them need only use synth for song writing as easy, as it is possible.
Hmm... When I heard that Yamaha launched pattern sequencer in their new firmware update v3.0 for Montage / Modx. I got excited and really wanted to see, but it's not that good, not easy, not simple and not user friendly the way it should be on a performance synth. For basic recording it's fine. I liked the Rhythm Pattern new feature on Montage. Which was already there on Modx and now midi controller is also possible to connect via usb port etc. Looks like Roland Fantom the dope, the beast is giving serious competition to Yamaha Montage.
Nice explanation man. Seriously. I actually think you gave the best description. Performance = Sounds/kits used and Performance = Sequence (in MPC language). How's the midi capabilities when using another device to control the parts/tracks of the performance?
I have Modx and I want Pa700 too lol. Remembrr that Modx is a synth, very different than an arranger. The sounds are much better, but you can't use it as an arranger.
@@fnonaka Oh I know. My point being was that I used my Pa700 as a sound engine for multitrack MIDI recording, which is exactly what I would use a MODX for.
I was trying to choose between MoDX and Roland FA (which I ordered but canceled because of the sample issues)to try and avoid a pc or device as much as possible. I hadn't noticed I was reading old posts about the MoDX sequencer and ordered the MoDX7 a few days ago when I found out about the latest patch.
Bo.............. You showed be exactly what I needed to see. I have to get this keyboard now. Can you do one showing people how to load the whole DX7 sound factory into the MODX?
Hi Bo! We appreciate your efforts on helping us. Is that a chance to have a new video using MODX along with one of your tons of analog Synths? I am familiar with Yamaha language but I am new in analog synths and I would like to see them working together. Thank you!
Wow. Äntligen kommer det jag aldrig trodde skulle komma. Det är en av de största sakerna som fattats på en MODX och gör i mina ögon den enormt mycket bättre. Längtar så. Tack även för alla bra och inspirerande klipp du släppt.
Thanks for all the tutorials on this. I’ll be getting my MODX today. Can I update it straight to the newest Version or do I need to start with the oldest version first?
Great tutorial and made me update to 2.0! Btw, if I want to start my recording on bars 5-8, I notice it will apply my "pattern" to bars 1-4 automatically when in overdub mode. Is there a way to prevent this? This seems to happen when I want to go back and add a high hat over my drums in overdub mode, but only apply the high hat for bars 5-8. It will always add the high hat to bars 1-4 for some reason
Great! So it's very good for building a song, actually much better than a linear sequencer, because of the linking of scenes, I think I'm gonna buy this synth...
Great tuto and pretty cool ambiance music thank’s a lot i love the modx and with you help that will be better for me because i’m just beguin with (sorry for my english)
Thanks for introduction, just a few questions: 1) Is it possible to play the pattern after recording without stoping? (You always press stop) 2) Is it possible to leave play pattern screen and work on the sound-design afterwards? 3) Is it possible to switch to record mode while playing?
1) i press stop because of muscle memory. I generally do this whatever synth I am working on :D some kind of control thing... The pattern just loops and auto-quantizes if you have that set up. You can see it when I overdub the drums. 2) Yes. You can simply press play whenever and listen to current pattern. 3) Record mode? overdub and replace? I have not tried this.
WOW, I did not see this coming. A lot of people (myself included) have bemoaned the lack of sequencer in the MODX, and I really didn't see them adding one, given it's ostensibly a synth not a workstation (although it undeniably always had workstation tendancies). All we need now is a grid-based MIDI editor to really make that sequencer amazing. Or is there anything like that in this update? Thanks for the video.
Using the arpeggiator for recording bass lines or guitar strums would be another alternative. Does the MODX offer “drum fill” presets for adding between scenes ? great video thanks !
Very helpful to make a decision to purchase this synthesizer or better said workstation. The sequencer makes it very powerful, but is the audi-recorder also a good feature of the modx ?
Very nice. Still rusty on the pattern performance logic but will keep watching videos. I’m finding it not intuitive to lay down tracks I have to keep on selecting/unselecting the keyboard buttons below the track name on to record the right track. Otherwise two tracks get recorded at the same time.
Great video showing the update that now made me abandon the thought I've had of getting a backup MoXF. Damn, new problem, I can't wait for the MoXF to die so that I can upgrade! ;-) Pretty slick track too!
@@BoBeats Hahaha, it also rains quite a bit in my neck of the woods, maybe I should just leave the window open a bit wider and see what sh1t may happen. ;-) Question, I assume the sequencer can also sequence external gear? Also, in the performance, can you (as on the MoXF) set some tracks to not play internal sound but only send the MIDI to external gear? Thanks again for the great video!
@@zpinkLondonBelow i havn't tried using it for any sort of external sequencing. My guess is that it should work, but you better check with yamaha sources
@@BoBeats It would be pretty daft of them if it didn't work like on the MoXF, i.e. being a master keyboard. Thinking about it, even more so since they introduced it without a 'proper' sequencer with the justification that "most people use a DAW anyway". :-)
But what if I want to record a linear song thst is not made of endlessly repeating identical patterns? Can I simply lay down different unique tracks? How long can each such track be (max "pattern" length, I guess)?
Wow. Everything sounds crisp and clear, much to what I remember tracks sounding like in the 90s and early 00s before DAWs took over. Does it have it inbuilt master and track processing?
Great video Bo... thanks for this great tutorial, i Just got my modx 8 today... Awesome.. I wonder if we'll see a v.3 of the OS with a bump to 512 or even 999 measures, making it competitive with the Nautilus
I own the Kronos, with sort of the same features, I find it very hard to stay in your creative state when using this methode. I always just layer stuff in logic. Great vid tho, bo bro ;-)
yeah! I think this isn’t a replacement for a daw or really good hw sequencer. But it definitely works for making scetches. For me its a huge improvement.

Yeah it could be way more graphical
Great work mate!
Thanks bud!!
Great music and great presentation, as always.
overall I feel that the UI of the Modx is clunky. Companies like Roland and Yamaha need to look at what Elektron are doing :-)
Agree.
Nice teacher you show slowly simple how it is working
Great intro to the pattern sequencer, thanks a bunch, and I’m also a subscriber! 👍
You did well then there Bo to get a Beta OS to check out - can't wait for my MODX v2.0 update in October! 😎🎹👍
Very nice Tutorial, it’s similar to their accompaniment lines but more pro sounds and tracks
Nice explanation man. Seriously. I actually think you gave the best description. Performance = Sounds/kits used and Performance = Sequence (in MPC language). How's the midi capabilities when using another device to control the parts/tracks of the performance?
Yamaha needs to add the ability to search and/or design sounds while the sequencer is looping. I also think Audio tracks would have been useful.
Man I'd love one of these MODX boards ... they look like so much fun and sound great for the money. I already have a Korg Pa700 arranger, though.
Reminds me of the MPC sequencer. I think I could get the hang of it. 👍
Can you do one showing people how to load the whole DX7 sound factory into the MODX?
thanks buddy! I have no plans on any DX7 imports but Woody Piano Shack has a video on it
@@BoBeats gracias
The Get Phrase and Put Phrase functions are great for arranging tracks.
You are a blessing to me I'm learning so much from you, thanks again
Hi Bo! We appreciate your efforts on helping us. Is that a chance to have a new video using MODX along with one of your tons of analog Synths? I am familiar with Yamaha language but I am new in analog synths and I would like to see them working together. Thank you!
Unfortunately I dont use it any more. My daughter started taking piano lessons so she has it now.
@@BoBeats to know that your young lady is taking piano lessons makes me happy! Thank you for following up!
Hopefully I get this beast soon
Wow. Äntligen kommer det jag aldrig trodde skulle komma. Det är en av de största sakerna som fattats på en MODX och gör i mina ögon den enormt mycket bättre. Längtar så. Tack även för alla bra och inspirerande klipp du släppt.
Tack kompis! Jag håller med. Plötsligen känns denna synthen mycket mer värd.
Thanks for all the tutorials on this. I’ll be getting my MODX today. Can I update it straight to the newest Version or do I need to start with the oldest version first?
Update to latest version as it has new features and fixes bugs.
Great! So it's very good for building a song, actually much better than a linear sequencer, because of the linking of scenes, I think I'm gonna buy this synth...
thank you so much BoBeat for this video ! super clear and super useful ! you're a star !
But this is not a sequencer - it's Pattern mode - Yamaha has it in his keyboards since Mo/Mox/Moxf versions...
Wow, véry well done and crisp clear!
Thanks véry much. Hope you will do follow up vidz!!
Great tuto and pretty cool ambiance music thank’s a lot i love the modx and with you help that will be better for me because i’m just beguin with
(sorry for my english)
Thanks for tutorial, it was exactly what I needed! 😎👍
Thanks! Very helpful after all the vague stuff I read in reviews.
Kindly do sequencer advance videos also. Need to learn editing midi notes, editing velocity notes, quantize etc
GREETINGS.......Thanks for the nice review. Please, would the MODX come with a SMOOTH SOUND TRANSITION feature.
Hello, Thanks for this helpful video. Why is "Replace" used to add the additional bass track to a pre-recorded track, instead of using "Overdub"?
Excellent tutorial video thank you!
Great video thanks! It is nice that they added the sequencer. Thanks for the video.
BoBeats
WOW, I did not see this coming. A lot of people (myself included) have bemoaned the lack of sequencer in the MODX, and I really didn't see them adding one, given it's ostensibly a synth not a workstation (although it undeniably always had workstation tendancies). All we need now is a grid-based MIDI editor to really make that sequencer amazing. Or is there anything like that in this update? Thanks for the video.
Yes it was a surprise to me too!
Wooooow Yamaha! What great news! Yamaha goes the Novation path!
i am hoping we are seeing a small shift.. ill try to keep roland honest with some MC updates. its super important
Using the arpeggiator for recording bass lines or guitar strums would be another alternative. Does the MODX offer “drum fill” presets for adding between scenes ? great video thanks !
2020 It does, but the fun with the Seq is creating you own lines and beats without having to fire up the computer
Good and clear explanation. Thanks. But, how to use and record another 8 tracks: 9-16?
thank you for making this!
Thanks for this Bo, really excellent tutorial, I wish you had written the manual for this section 😎👍
Whats your video set up to record this video? What camera/tripods you use? to do two head over shot. One all keyboard and one the screen.
Watch my video ”how to make synthesizer videos”
Brilliant Bo, can't wait for the firmware update. I notice you said save as MIDI. Once updated, will my MODX7 be able to save as .WAV or MP3?
As far as I know it can save a wave file to a usb drive.
Great video showing the update that now made me abandon the thought I've had of getting a backup MoXF.
Damn, new problem, I can't wait for the MoXF to die so that I can upgrade! ;-)
Pretty slick track too!
thanks bud! And I hear water is bad for synths so... you didnt gear that advice from me.. but I am just saying 🤣✌️
@@BoBeats Hahaha, it also rains quite a bit in my neck of the woods, maybe I should just leave the window open a bit wider and see what sh1t may happen. ;-)
Question, I assume the sequencer can also sequence external gear?
Also, in the performance, can you (as on the MoXF) set some tracks to not play internal sound but only send the MIDI to external gear?
Thanks again for the great video!
@@zpinkLondonBelow i havn't tried using it for any sort of external sequencing. My guess is that it should work, but you better check with yamaha sources
@@BoBeats It would be pretty daft of them if it didn't work like on the MoXF, i.e. being a master keyboard. Thinking about it, even more so since they introduced it without a 'proper' sequencer with the justification that "most people use a DAW anyway". :-)
Thankx for your very useful advice !
Great intro Bo. Is there any quantization in triggering parts? Useful playing the sequencer live and pressing the button a bit earlier.
thank you for the video (and all of your others as I am new to your channel . .but love it)
But what if I want to record a linear song thst is not made of endlessly repeating identical patterns? Can I simply lay down different unique tracks? How long can each such track be (max "pattern" length, I guess)?
Bo, I don't have money growing in a tree.
Gosh that MC-101 looks nice...GAS.
As does the Model.
And MPC LIVE.
🤣👌
Do you have to stop the sequence every time you can’t go onto next track while in rehearsal mode and start recording?
Wow. Everything sounds crisp and clear, much to what I remember tracks sounding like in the 90s and early 00s before DAWs took over. Does it have it inbuilt master and track processing?
yes, each part (track) has individual insert fx + there are master fx
Great video Bo... thanks for this great tutorial, i Just got my modx 8 today... Awesome.. I wonder if we'll see a v.3 of the OS with a bump to 512 or even 999 measures, making it competitive with the Nautilus
At 1:24
Nice, we can make old porn movie music now on the MODx !
i was waiting for this comment 🤣👌
I was thinking this in my head but had a visual as well lol
Yesssss!!!
Omg clean you poor mind boy! Lol
@@BoBeats Can the MODX sequence external hardware?
