- With the first and only season of the 1974 Planet of the Apes Television Series recently celebrate its 50 year anniversary, and after months of watching and discussing the show week by week all the way to its end, the time has come for me to rank every all 14 episodes of the show!

Regarding episode 13, the official reason as to why it wasn't released was the controversy surrounding the creation of a poisonous gas. CBS wanted to avoid not having an episode tied up with international conflicts (Vietnam)

The top 6 were easy & so we're the bottom 2 to rank, but 7-12 was very difficult to rank I was constantly changing them even when I was writing this comment. 😂 The Trap is my #1 cause I just love the hero & villain having to work together to survive & this episode really gave Urko a chance to shine, since for much of the series he was the mustache twirling villain. The Interrogation & The Surgeon are really a toss up & I don't blame you for making The Surgeon #1. The Trap, The Surgeon, & The Interrogation all could've been ranked first for me to be honest. But, I ranked The Interrogation over The Surgeon cause I really liked that physiological thriller story they were telling plus I love the dynamic of Galen & his father. The Good Seed was probably the most difficult episode for me to rank cause it is very good episode but Anto just gets under my skin too much to rank higher than 10. As for the last two I go back & forth over which is worse The Liberators or The Gladiators, but I went with The Gladiators as last place cause outside of Barlow I really didn't enjoy it I always find myself looking at the clock waiting for this episode to be over...I'm always bored with it for whatever reason & The Liberators is just forgettable.

Great vid! I think I've seen a couple of episodes but your review makes me want to watch the series. I the new films are great but I like the original films and these look good.
You have done a great job on this series thank you the only bad part I was old enough to watch them when they came out I was in the 4th grade.
Episode 13 did air in a few local areas. Also, I believe it wasn't aired most areas because of the subject matter.
Does this mean now that your furnished with the TV series are you gonna do the cartoon one?
The Liberators episode wasn’t deliberately skipped as I remember seeing the preview for it at the end of the previous week’s episode. My recollection was it got preempted over most of the country but I don’t remember why. It being the worst episode was just a happy coincidence. Also, I hadn’t realized until now but it seemed they put more work into the ape characters and the human characters were left two dimensional.
I couldn't remember all the titles but I also love The surgeon episode. I find it kind of suspenseful for Virden character is in distress after being shot and the race to save him even though the character will love on. 🙏RIP to Ron Harper and Roddy McDowell and of course to all those passed on from all those original films and series.👍🇭🇲🦘✌️
The librateters was aired in the UK back in 1974 I live in northern Ireland so our TV was mostly from England and Northern Ireland is part of the UK the series was broadcast on a channel ITV as there were only three channels but the channel when showing northern Irish programmes it was utv Ulster TV the liberators was my least favourite and school friends everyone was disappointed the gorillas only appeared at the start and Galen was the only ape inn the rest of the episode i recall one friend seeing that episode it was his first time seeing it he kept saying where's the apes where's the great urko and the soldiers you speak of he was disappointed but after seeing other episodes he was hooked like myself
I love this tv series! Thank you for providing all this detailed content. Episode 1, 3, 4, and 5 are my favorites. In 1974 I would have ranked episode 5 “the legacy “ as the best one. I respect your analysis explaining why the Legacy comes in 12th. I’ll go “The Good Seeds”. Then “Legacy”. The Trap and in 4th place “return to tomorrow”
The Liberator is certainly the weekest of the pack. I would put The Trap aa No 1 and The Surgeon at 2, mainly, due personal taste, I like it what Apes revisit the ruins of the old human world and the Zoo poster is effective. 3 The Intergation, it's intense 4, The Deception, touching and disturbing and 5 is toss up been the fun of The Horse Race or Tomorrow's tide and unusual setting for the series.
Not sure about ranking them all or even top 3 or bottom, however my absolute favourite is the same as this list, The Surgeon.
Why?
My absolute favourite character in all of POTA is Zira.
She is at ten heart of Escape and Planet.
Her small role in Beneath is one of the biggest drawbacks to that movie.
And I understand why she isn’t in anything else, but if Kim Hunter had played Lisa, Conquest and Battle would have improved a lot.
So why am I talking about a movie character in regards to the best episode of a TV show?
Because Kira is almost Zira. She’s not just a pure ripoff of Zira, but there are many parallels
She’s a Zira type character though, and done well.
This episode has a heart all the others are missing.
If the show had been renewed they would have done well to make her a recurring character
The chemistry with Galen was fun to watch.
The Trap would be #1 and your bottom 5 I would rate higher

Really loved your series of reviews for this series Josh, I think I saw these on TV before the movies as I was born on 1971 Im lucky enough to have the series on DVD, so Ive binged it after watching your reviews.
The Tyrant episode I made a mistake on previous comment called it The Dictator . Pardon that mistake. I did leave my favorites comment on a previous video. I love them all some more than others. I grew up watching those back in the mid 1970s. I have the series and love my personal reruns. I understand if you have personal ups and downs with the series as a new viewer to this my favorites ever after the original films. I like all three characters very much. It's a great team. I rather did like The Gladiator episode. I didn't find it to be an issue regarding the concentration on the human characters. I agree the character Barlow was lovable and wish he appeared more in the series. To me the series still stands after so many decades. As mentioned in previous comment I love the locations. It's a nice atmosphere. Tomorrow's Tide I love the seaside as well as Up Above The World So High.👍🇭🇲🦘✌️
😮These are favorites not in any ranking order Escape From Tomorrow, The Gladiator, Tomorrow's tide, The Horse Race, The Surgeon, The Cure, The good seeds, The Deseption, Up Above The World So High. Favorites is for the open scenery the tense actions and more characters.The Trap and The Interrogation I did like but found it was cosentrating in enclosed places. Not in question of the actors performances. I liked the open more freedom to open scenery. I may have missed one or two or other episodes. However i fo like them all.👍🇭🇲🦘✌️
