Such a shame you are not a specialist in the quran, but Im not surprised; sect-muslims always put the quran second: only a book for singing recitation during prayer. Shame on you for not reflecting upon qurans verses. If you did, you would know hadiths are satan’s works, and can not possibly be authentic.
SAHIH MUSLIM HADITH: Book 50, Number 60:
There would come people amongst the Muslims on the Day of Resurrection with as heavy sins as a mountain, and Allah would forgive them and He would place in their stead the Jews and the Christians. (As far as I think), Abu Raub said: I do not know as to who is in doubt. Abu Burda said: I narrated it to ‘Umar b. ‘Abd al-’Aziz, whereupon he said: Was it your father who narrated it to you from Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ)? I said: Yes.
Explain this fucking garbage compared to the just God described in the quran. And beware what you say ‘brother’, Allah is watching, and who is more wicked than those who lie about Allah ..

Wow! This was a very enjoyable discussion. As always, may Allah reward you brother for your commendable efforts. THIS POST IS A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE, especially by you dear brother Paul.
First, I'm very impressed by Prof. Brown's knowledge of the Tradition & his candidness mashallah. - I'd like to make a few comments on this subject that others may benefit more inshallah.
    PART1 (second in next comment):
It is a misconception that Abu Hanifa's school of thought (aka Hanafi) in Iraq judged Hadith value based on principles (qawa'id). Rather, when new Hadith contradicts the Quran or another established (Mutawatir) Hadith without evident reconciliation, Abu Hanifa requires that it must first be of the same degree of certainty to be considered, else rejected. This is contrary to Shafi'i approach, who deems certainty an after the fact judgement that does not necessarily equal authenticity. Thus, he allows less certain Hadith to abrogate the Quran. Malik's approach consists of looking at the practice of Medina, i.e. of the sons of the Prophet's companions, as a criterion for authenticity.
The reason why Abu Hanifa was more strict on the authenticity of Hadith than others, like Malik & Shafi's, is because:
    1. There were a lot less companions who settled in Iraq (about 300) than those in Medina (in the thousands). Thus less narration was available.
    2. Iraq was the source of most sectarianism & turmoil in the Islamic world then (Qadaria, Shia, Mutazila...etc). Thus, unlike Medina where forgeries were extremely hard to achieve, Hadith fabrication in Iraq was very common.
    3. Abu Hanifa needed an objective standard for his methodology, an anchor of confidence. Malik had only see the practices of the sons of companions in Medina to infer confidence in his rulings. Abu Hanifa had no such privilege in Iraq, hence his requirement of Tawatur (or almost) in accepting Hadith.
As to the principles that Abu Hanifa & his students were setting up, aka Qawa'id. There are two schools of Legal Theory (Usul) in Fiqh:
    1. The school of Athar (later known as school of theologians), initiated by Malik then formalized by Shafi'i. Their approach consists of inferring general rules & objective standards from the Quran, Sunnah, linguistic theory & analytical reasoning, under which all rulings are guided (this is akin to legal theory in the West, in fact its origin).
    2. The school of Ra'y (later known as school of jurists), initiated by Abu Hanifa & formalized by his students. Their approach consists of inferring general principles & maxims (similar to articles of law & constitutional law today, in fact that's their origin) regarding specific legal topics in the Quran & Sunnah, from which rulings can be guided.
These two schools eventually merge in later centuries.
As to Hadith authenticity, to help viewers understand more the subject. I''ll try to explain how the scholars of Hadith figure out which Hadith are authentic & which aren't, & some basics of the methodology the use.
What is a Hadith? - It's a saying or an action by the beloved Prophet (pbuh), thus a historical record from the past, thus information removed from us in time & place.
How do we access that information? - We need a chain of transmission from our point of time & place, all the way up to that source of information.
What conditions must this chain have? - It must be connected throughout without disruption, else potential loss of information. It also must accurately transmit the information, else untrustworthy. It also must be corroborated & supported by other chains regarding the same information.
What kind of information do we expect? - Since the source is a saying or a report of an action, thus spoken words, the information we receive must also be spoken words, else unfaithfully preserved.
What kind of medium we must have then? - There are 8 levels of reception of information (Talaqi) the scholars have established, but only the first two are admissible in sound hadiths, i.e. vocal transmission (as opposed to written or handed...etc). That is because vocal transmission is the only medium which faithfully preserves the original information; the same way a photo is only faithfully transmitted in picture format, a description of it will never achieve that.
What do we expect from the people transmitting the information? - They must be reliable. That is, they must be able to accurately retain the facts they receive, hence fulfill perfect proficiency (Dabt), & at the same time be able to faithfully share retained facts, hence fulfill perfect truthfulness (Adala). Thiqa (reliability) to Hadith scholars means both conditions are perfectly fulfilled.
To elaborate, suppose the information is "X", from source Oliver, transmitted to another Harry, hence the following chain:
    Oliver said "X" => Harry retained "Y" => Harry shared "Z"
How do we make sure X = Z? (i.e. what Harry heard from Oliver is exactly what Harry told us). - If Harry has perfect proficiency, then Y = X (what he retained is accurate). If Harry has perfect truthfulness than Y = Z (faithfully share what is retained). If Harry has both, then X = Z, hence perfect preservation of information. If Harry lacks in either, then the information is not perfectly preserved.
Still, this isn't enough. Mistakes can happen. We must also have at least one or more other independent collaborative chains of transmission. Why? Because the chances rise significantly with every other chains. If probability of truth is 99% with one chain, it's 99.99% with two, & 99.9999% with three...etc.
In conclusion, if a chain of transmission of information from source A to target Z is connected throughout, where every narrator is perfectly proficient & truthful, & corroborated by other chains, then this is deemed a sound Hadith (Sahih), though not authentic with certainty yet.
How do we achieve absolute certainty in Hadith authenticity? - For this, the scholars of Hadith require the condition of Tawatur. That is, congruence of sensory testimonies by a great number of independent witnesses, such that it is inconceivable they could have all conspired to tell the same lie, at each level throughout the chain of transmission.
Let us unpack the above definition: Say a dozen of independent people from different places around the world, at different instances, from different backgrounds, say to different people that they saw the Dollar note & it said "In God with trust". It is inconceivable that all these people said exactly the same words by chance, therefore it must be certainly true. This way is exactly how we all know for a fact that China exists or Australia without ever being there.
If the above is true throughout the chain of transmission, then at each level the transfer of information is certain, therefore, the information is transfred with certainty from the source to the target. Hence, certainty in authenticity.
Are the Hadith we have really that reliable? - This is a statistical answer. I rely on the Gawami Kalem digital encyclopedia of Hadith for the numbers. The encyclopedia is not exhaustive but it's pretty close to being such (it does not include the Sirah sources for example). In specific numbers, it indexes around 1.2 million narration from 1400 sources of Hadith (like Muwata Malik, Sahih Bukhari...) by 487 scholars & compliers of Hadith (such as Bukhari, Muslim...), spread into 468,110 chains of transmission, of 50,050 accounts by 2377 companions (Sahabi) about 20,744 unique events of the beloved Prophet (pbuh). Of these, 1360 unique events are reported by 7 companions -i.e. illegible for Tawatur, & more than 3700 reported by more than 3 companions. - It also indexes 6080 narrators from the successor second generation (to the companions = Tabiin, like Abu Hanifa), 8660 narrators from the follower third generation (of the successors = Atbaa, like Imam Malik), & 8560 narrators among the succeeding fourth generation followers (like Bukhari).
Given the numbers above, every unique prophetic event is, on average, reported by 2+1/2 companions, through 39 independent chains of transmission, involving some 400 narrators, & finally appearing in 60 independent book references. - This is ample evidence of the overall reliability of Hadith Tradition. 39 chains of transmission (on average) is VERY sufficient to determine the authenticity or otherwise of a hadith. Some Hadiths actually have more than 2000 chains of transmission (fulfilling Tawatur), while others (generally fabricated) have a single chain.

      PART2
What exactly did Imam al-Bukhari do & why has his work gained so much approval & respect by the Hadith scholar community? - Without delving too much into this, scholars of Hadith traditionally (pre-Bukhari) relied on three methods to determine the reliability of narrators:
      1. Testimony = what scholars have testified for or against these narrators, either through meeting them or examining their narrations.
      2. Reputation = how are these narrators perceived by the Hadith scholar community, though this is a lesser credible method.
Bukhari took this much further, introducing a new systematic way of assessing reliability, especially for those for whom we have no available testimony. He lived three generations away from the beloved Prophet (pbuh) (i.e. he met those (Atbaa) who met those (Tabiin) who met those (Sahaba) who met him), thus much liars & fabricators appeared.
Firstly, he went around the Muslim world collecting Hadith from almost 1100 sheikhs, amounting to 600k narration.
Secondly, he studied all the narrators he came across in all these narrations, who amounted to some 41k narrator, from whom more than half were unknown. Hence, his Tarikh Kabir (Major History) biographical compilation (formerly printed in 80 volumes).
Thirdly, he devised a complex system of grading of narrators & narrations, such that reliable narrators are those who report reliable narrations, & reliable narrations are those reported by reliable narrators. - To elaborate with an analogy, imagine you were asked to grade a Multiple Choice test on Chinese literature for a class of students, & asked to accord 1 point for easy questions, 2 for medium & 3 points for difficult ones. But you don't understand Chinese. What you do is you say that easy questions are answered by most students, & difficult students are answered by the few brilliant ones. So you go through the exam papers & check corroboration between answers to deduce which are difficult & which students are brilliant...etc. This is exactly what Bukhari did, except with 600k questions & 41k students. YEP!
Fourthly, he picked from these reliable narrations what fulfilled his high standard of authentication. Namely, on top of everything else above mentioned about conditions of sound narration, he required that a narrator from another must be proven to have in fact met each-other (with testimony), he also required two corroborating narrators from each source...etc.
As to Western academia nonsense. It is simply impossible to access information in the past though anything else but a chain of transmission, without a chain of transmission which will faithfully transmit the information through the proper medium & conditions, the information is strictly lost. Does Western academia on Hadith (or History in general) fulfill absolutely any such conditions on the transmission of information? The answer is a resounding NO. Therefore, all their methods & conclusions are henceforth dismissed.

Great discussion, Paul. However, I feel like Dr. Brown could have explained/elaborated some things better.
Example 1: "many versions of one hadith". Often times it's just a swap of two words... ex. "I love Theology Blogging" where it should've been "I love Blogging Theology". As if Bukhari was trying to show us the correct and false word order...nevertheless, the content of both hadiths are essentially correct. Moreover, the hadiths of Bukhari that 'really' are in question, are about 30". There are reasons for that which take me to my second example.
Example 2: Perhaps a mini intro to the 'Hadith studies' to give the viewers idea of how hadiths are checked, analyzed, picked etc...
Example 3: He could've also spoken about who Bukhari was and his work to give the viewer a glimpse of why we call his book the second most authentic book after the Quran OR rather the most accurate book a human can produce. He left out many valuable pieces of information about Bukhari's collection. I guess the time wasn't on his side.
Other than that, another masterpiece. Thanks a lot, Paul. Maybe, if possible you could have Dr. Brown again.

Its funny how he can debate that LBGT issue with other scholars who are respectful and still have adab towards him, yet this basic adab escapes most Muslims. He is not saying his opinion is truth or even popular. He is merely presenting an argument and making a case. He never condones it either, he only make the case that legally there might be reason to allow it in a secular society. Other scholars disagree with him, but they still have a civil discussion and present their arguments with proper adab. One controversial opinion doesn't wipe away all the good and credentials he has.

@@TanerTech Mr TanerTech: Muslim scholars opinion in a Muslim community is as important and regarded as some of the foundations. A scholar derives or set goals for the whole Muslim community instead of just "chit chatting" and passing personal opinions publicly in relation to deen. A Muslim scholar must be careful for what he is saying in font of the public since there are lot of people who are inspired by this self proclaimed scholar of Islam. This is not simple as agreement or disagreement, this is the fundamental core concept of Islam on the basis of which the whole nation has been wiped out. If he disagrees with what Quran says then he even cannot claim to be Muslim though he is presenting himself to be the scholar. If he has his personal opinions then it should not be passed or delivered in public vicinity since he is already influencing lot of Muslims in the US claiming to be a Muslim scholar. Most of the Yakeener's are of his type and are getting Government funds to create the divisions and deviations including him to secularize Islam including Yasir Qadhi, Ilhan Omar etc etc. Muslim scholars agreement or disagreement does not effect the core principles or essence of Quran (Harams & Halals) because everyone since 1400 years have their agreement, the agreement and disagreement can be found on rather other issues. He is not representing the Muslims instead he is the part of a cult. *Zuhri*
The man who first time started to forge hadith was Mullah Zuhri. He was EMPLOYEE of Omayyad Caliphs and also later of Abbasid Caliphs. Caliphs used him to fabricate hadiths for their Political gains; and Goldziher has given its full proof in his books. When Omayyad Caliphs had dispute with Abd-Allah bin Zubayr who was Ruler of Mecca; Omayyad Caliphs stopped Syrian Muslims going Mecca for Hajj because during Hajj, Abd-Allah bin Zubayr used to take oath of loyalty from pilgrims. But Syrian Muslims started to protest how can Omayyad Caliph stop them from Hajj when Hajj is ordained in Quran. Now in order to diffuse this problem: Omayyad Caliph pressurized Zuhri to FORGE hadith of two Qibla, one in Mecca and other in Jerusalem. Then Omayyad Caliphs built a Mosque in Jerusalem (60 years after the death of Prophet) and named it Masjid-al-Aqsa in order to attach verse 17:1 with this new mosque. Syrians were successfully fooled by Omayyad Caliphs and Zuhri, and Syrian Muslims were doing FAKE Hajj in Jerusalem for about two years until Omayyad Caliphs Captured Mecca and murdered Abd-Allah bin Zubayr. Zuhri himself confessed that he had no plan to write/spread hadiths but Malook (kings) pressed me.
