what a pianist. the strength, beauty and elegance...incomparable. Yuja was sweating from the effort. very engaging.
I had the amazing opportunity to see her play this from the second row directly in front of her. That will be 2 years ago and I'm still speechless. You cannot get a sense of her power from the videos ..I've watched a lot! And most impressively..her breathing was audible. I was blown away by the physicality involved in playing to her level of mastery. I'll never get over it
Yuja plays with fire and passion, she deserves a conductor who conducts with the same level of fire and passion. Zubin looks like he could fall over any moment.
Before I saw your comment I was thinking that Mehta looked bored. He is pushing 90 so I’m not expecting him to leap up and down, but I do expect conductors to at least pretend to care. I’ve played in orchestras for 40 years and have the good fortune to have played with Yuja several times, including the four Rachmaninoff piano concertos in one weekend. Nobody sits still when she is playing!
To cut Mehta's some slack: Maybe he knows how to get what's needed from the orchestra without gesturing like a wild man (I sang in a choir when we were all in robes, director included, and his comment to us was, "The people didn't come to watch me look like I'm trying to fly; watch me carefully and do what you know we want to do." Kept his hands mostly in front of himself ... but his facial expressions! We knew what to do and when!) Maybe Mehta is not feeling well but soldiering-on. Maybe respect for his legendary status alone deserves cutting him some slack. I can't imagine people in that audience went away saying, "Yuja was great, but the orchestra sounded terrible." FWIW
Why do I feel, the conductor is not important. I feel, they would do almost the same thing without a conductor.

I just love the way she is actually fully immersed in the music. Every time I see her perform I get more impressed in how, through her facial expressions, she appears to be talking to the piano as if it were her child.

The brass sharp spot-on entries at 1:35 are critical to keep and show these final octaves were perfectly in-sync... piano and orchestra... superb ending of Rach 3, never seen before! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Definitely something from the recording. The microphone for the trumpet was just too close and it wasn't adjusted, not the players' fault.
I was there at the opening of Verbier Festival, and indeed I felt like there was a bit too much of brass.

@@hugowilliams1988 A good question. The fan boys don't allow for recognition of the many knuckle breaking pianists who play this wonderfully. They cannot say why Yuchan Lim is great (he is) - that's what's so ridiculous. Also a comment here from "bloodgras" pointed out that Rachmonioff is the real hero / "goat" and he rightfully acknowledges the orchestra and conductor.

Yes, please tell these fan boys this! Yuchan Lim is incredible and will enrich the music world for years to come one hopes, but there are other pianists, other great even legendary performances of Rach 3: Andrei Gavrilov, Daniil Trifonov is fantastic on this and almost everything else I have heard him play, Yefim Bronfam is a legend for Rach 3 that he has performed around the world, G. Sokolov, here Yuja Wang, and the greats of the past as remarkable Lazar Berman, V. Horowitz of course and so many more. Each brings something else to this masterpiece keeping us interested in what could be labeled a warhorse, but we continue to listen and love it and not tire of it because each musician reveals new insights into this masterpiece.
@@larkspur77 It may be human nature to compare, but to let it become an MMA competition will indeed blind a person to the music itself, and the many ways dedicated and amazing artists (and that includes the orchestra and conductors) can help us enjoy the genius of the work. The GOAT is Rachmaninoff.
