This song was a lifesaver for me back in high school (class of65). Hearing these guys tell me, an uptight little bookish nerd from Staten Island, that it was “all right” to “have a good time” - instead of constantly worrying about my looks, my clothes, my chances of getting into a good graduate school for my Ph.D. in English, what my parents thought, etc., etc. - was like getting out of jail. I never did get that Ph.D … but by God I had myself a good time. No regrets. Thanks, Curtis & co.!

    Say it's all right
    (It's all right)
    Say it's all right
    (It's all right)
It's all right, have a good time
'Cause it's all right, whoa, it's all right
    We're gonna move it slow
    When lights are low
When you move it slow, it sounds like more
And it's all right, whoa, it's all right
    Now listen to the beat
    Kinda pat your feet
You got soul, and everybody knows
That it's all right, whoa, it's all right
When you wake up early in the morning
Feeling sad like so many of us do
    Hum a little soul
    Make life your goal
And surely something's got to come to you
    And say it's all right
    (It's all right)
    Say it's all right
    (It's all right)
It's all right, have a good time
'Cause it's all right, whoa, it's all right
    Now everybody clap your hands
    Give yourself a chance
You got soul, and everybody knows
That it's all right, whoa, it's all right
Someday I'll find me a woman
Who will love and treat me real nice
Then my woe's got to go
And my love, she will know
    From morning, noon, and night
    And she's got to
    Say it's all right
    (It's all right)
    Say it's all right
    (It's all right)
It's all right, have a good time
'Cause it's all right, whoa, it's all right
    Now everybody clap your hands
    Now give yourselves a chance
    You got soul

I was a teenager when the movie Superfly and this soundtrack came out in 1972. It was the biggest movie in the latino and black community as big if not bigger than Starwars or The Godfather. People don't realize but this was considered gangster music at the time. All the pimps, players and hustlers listened to this soundtrack in their 8 track players all day and night long.
People who have commented have suggested this soundtrack made the movie. Nothing could be further from the truth, the movie and the soundtrack made each other. One enhanced the other, no more no less but equally which is why they are both timeless classics. I know, I lived it from the streets of NYC to Oakland California. Superfly and the Superfly Soundtrack is one if not the only soundtrack that completely complimented the each other. If you see the movie you think of the soundtrack, you listen to the soundtrack you think of the movie. Brilliance!

    On this day in 1963 {November 9th} the Impressions' "It's All Right" reached #1 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart
Two months earlier on September 28th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #4 and spent 14 weeks on the Top 100
It was composed by the trio's leader, Curtis Mayfield
During his 1993 European tour Bruce Springsteens covered the song eight times
Was featured in the 1994 movie "Angels in the Outfield"

The First time I heard about him was during the "Superfly" Era but I didn't know he was also in the Impressions. I was 9 in 1975. Also The Impressions were part of Dick Clark's Early Career when American Bandstand was still based in Philadelphia. Red Schwartz A Salesman would come to show Dick Songs by up and coming Artists, there was a Song by them that Dick particularly didn't like but Red reasoned with him to play it. He agreed and it was a smash. It was played later on in the Afternoon where there was a One Hour Difference in Chicago where they recorded for Vee Jay Records. The Song was "For Your Precious Love"

I don't think this was a live performance, they were prolly lipsyncing. No orchestra, for one thing. So the original singers were "singing" even though not present. In those days there weren't as many managers/agents/lawyers/accountants running people's singing careers. So the fact he provided content for concerts he wasn't part of, was probably never even mentioned. 🤔
      Or compensated.

I was about twelve years old when my neighbor, Martin McCoy had tickets to the old Buddy Dean dance show in Baltimore; 1963? It was broadcast from the Mondawmin Mall in northwest Baltimore. Only thing I remember is Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, cool as ALL OUT, standing at the top of that spiral staircase over the fountain and pool singing, cool and smooth “It’s alright, have a good time.” Indelible, soulful! The absolute greatest soul and R&B singing group that wrote, played and performed the majority of their own material. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, were next in line, only because none of them performed while playing an instrument.

I love this song. It only made it to # 4 in November of 1963. Sugar Shack, a song I can't stand, was #1.
