Sealing Our New Cedar Deck

  • We decided to apply an oil-based natural cedar color sealer to our new cedar deck to preserve the beautiful color of the cedar wood. After searching the Web, I identified a highly rated product: Ready Seal 112 Natural Cedar Exterior Wood Stain and Sealer. I ordered a 1-gallon can of this sealer along with a 5” Linzer brush through Amazon.com. The Ready Sealer was easy to apply by hand using the 5” brush and a small 1” brush for the tight spots. It absorbed quickly into the wood and there were no visual overlap lines, even on the few boards that were in the direct sun during application. Unlike water-based sealers that I have used on wood decks in the past, I felt no urgency in applying this sealer to avoid darker and lighter areas and overlap lines. Best of all, one gallon of Ready Seal covered the entire 12’ x 8’ deck, the sides and full-length steps in a single application. And there is still about half a gallon of sealer left in the can, just enough for a second coat next summer. I am very pleased with the results!

    Ready Seal is a fantastic product. I did my pressure-treated wood deck and back stairs with 2 coats of their "natural cedar" this summer and it looks absolutely phenomenal. I had to special order it from their factory in Texas as it's not available in stock at Lowe's or Home Depot here, but I'm sure glad I did and didn't "settle" for what was on the shelf. It really is "goof proof", very easy to apply and not in the least tacky. I'm glad I did my research and paid heed to all of the rave reviews of this product by professional contractors and homeowners alike. Best stain I've ever used.

      when you use "goof proof" inside of a comment or review it makes it seem like a company sponsored post. No one uses company tag lines in everyday talk.

    Looks great. One tip, next deck you build, snap a chalk line on the joist locations so your screws will be perfectly straight. countersink the holes and use stainless screws. Would look super professional!

    Thank you for the video, which one would you recommend to be used as a coat for the cedar deck timber floor outside - water-based or oil-based varnish? My concern is the water influence and durability.

    Half a gallon on a 12 x 8 deck? That's pretty good coverage. Did the Ready Seal dry well or stay tacky? I read a few reviews where people said it remained tacky for a very long time. I'm guessing they may have applied it too thick.

      Thanks for your comment! 48 hours after sealing our new cedar deck, we were walking on it and our dog was lying on it without any tacky residue transferred to shoes, clothing, skin, fur or dog paws. The oil based Ready Seal product worked great sealing our new wood deck, and it looks even better than I expected. Maybe it isn’t the best product for older decks that have been sealed before, and/or have not been properly stripped and cleaned in preparation for absorbing this sealer. Also, according to the manufacturer, you should not sand the wood before sealing because it plugs the pores reducing absorption. I called their 800 number when I discovered the raised fibers on my deck after scrubbing too hard with the bleach mixture. Thanks for watching my video! Randall

    My wife and I invested in a brand new cedar deck this summer - like you! Unfortunately I didn’t do enough research on stain/sealer. We went with a Benjamin Moore ArborCoat natural cedar color product and were pretty unhappy with the results. The deck was quite orange in color and we got pretty bad mildew/mold within the first 3 months. Judging from your video, the color of this product seems much more “natural.” I would assume you would agree? I had to strip our deck, have done a full sanding, and plan to wash it with a cleaner/brightener before potentially trying this product. What is Ready Seal’s recommended prep regimen? The sanding seemed necessary to remove what stain I couldn’t get off with the stripper, but curious what I will need to do to best prep for Ready Seal. Thanks so much for sharing this video!

      If you plan on using Ready Seal oil based sealer, I highly recommend that you first visit their website and read the product specs, then call the sales/support department and ask their advice. I was most impressed by the detailed information that I was provided. Best of luck with your project! - Randall

      I appreciate the reply! I have checked out their website and it is very informative and I will plan to give them a call. It is nice that you can get sample colors from them as that really helps too! Since it is mid October here in VT we might need to wait until next season, but we shall see!

      @@csuss If you first (before sealing) spray on a product called Boracare it will prevent the mold and mildew problem. You might try a pad applicator instead of a brush for sealant.

      Watch all my videos on this topic and you will know the answer. Bottom line, don’t bother power washing or sealing a deck on the north side of a house here on the east side of the Olympic Peninsula.

    • @joelf5565
      @joelf5565 ปีที่แล้ว

      My deck will be on the north side of my home in Indiana, USA. I do get much snow and it doesn’t melt very quick. I’m contemplating PVC, but the cost will be twice and I do prefer the look of wood (particularly the railings when looking out at our scenic forest). All the composite/pvc railings are black or white. I’ve heard good things about Olympic Maximum as a sealer.
