  • Tummy tucks are a very common cosmetic procedure. This procedure addresses excess skin and fat of the abdominal wall. Tummy tucks can be done with or without drains (aka drainless tummy tucks)
So what is a drain you may ask?! 🤨It’s a silicone tube that has draining ports on one end and then is connected to a suction bulb on the other. It’s placed in the area that was dissected for surgery and then comes out of the skin and attached to the suction bulb. It is meant to remove any fluid that builds up in the area after surgery.
However, patients do complain about the discomfort of drains or they may not feel that they would be able to appropriately manage them after surgery. Therefore drainless tummy tucks have become more popular.
For a drainless tummy tuck, the skin that is elevated up at the time of surgery is then sutured back down to the abdominal wall to seal off that dead space to prevent fluid from collecting there. The benefit is no drains post-op, however the extra sutures may make you feel a bit more sore. But in general patients do very well with this procedure.
Your recovery time and final results are no different. It’s just a matter of how you’ll be managing wound care after surgery.

I would imagine that it’s actually safer in some senses not to have drains due to possible infection?

Drains usually come out between 7-10 days and usually don't have issues with causing infections. Sometimes it is actually better to use drains.
