The screen remains off (well, flickers for a second), then turns off) when powered on. Only when I press a button does it turn on. Any way to default this to on? Thanks again!
Np. 1. If there is anything folder related, it sounds like you have USB plugged in so make sure you unplug that as it's not needed after you've followed this tutorial. 2. The screen should be staying on, if it's turning off then it may be detecting something else or there is a screen timeout thing in a menu you need to check. Or it could be USB, so make sure USB is unplugged too. I haven't encountered any of the issues you've mentioned in any of the a5000s I've done this too (a few now) so it's hard to say what's wrong.
Helpful video! Am seeking a camera to take pix of, paper documents, proposals, labels and business documents - instead of scanning. The camera or webcam will also be used for teleconferencing with colleages via; Skype, Discord and Zoom. About 3-5 times per week. There will be no streaming, promotion need or focus on cosmetics, but it should be professional. My system is linux based with; i7 chip, 32gb ram, 2 SSD's, 750w and an older GB mobo (usb 3.1). No additional graphic card. The a5000 which you recomend seems appropriate, would it be your pick for the needs noted? Is it compatibile with linux? Perhaps using gphoto2-linux software? Thank-you.
You'd be better off using something like the Genius Scan app on your phone than trying to do what you described. What you said is way overcomplicating something there Genius Scan makes relatively trivial
Your point is well taken. The phone is not ideal for snapping the items noted. Other needs include taking pix of; whiteboard, meeting notes, vistors, wireframes, prototypes, screenshots, interior product shots and product labels - along with documents. The task requires; getting angle right, centering, lighting and snapping. The cell/ scan may be fine for infrequent needs or for personal needs, but function and results are not enterprise grade. To date, have not succeeded without; fumblng, investing time to angles right, dropping the phone, accidentally hitting another icon and fussing with unresponsive touch screens. A tablet may work. The camera may not solve the probem either! Ideally, the camera would sit on my desk and serve the needs noted and (teleconferencing). My query is a bit oddball and not in your wheelhouse ~ no problem.
If you're dead set on going with a camera like this, i would check to see if the sony a5100 has come down enough in price versus the a5000 and choose that instead. It requires no tricks for clean HDMI output, it just works.
Nice hack! Now I'd like to use the clean HDMI output through a high speed HDMI extension cable to an external monitor, about 50ft away, so I need to have audio transmitted via HDMI as well. But this seems te be a problem... Only live-view is visible but no audio... Any suggestions?
Thanks for the video, great detailed tutorial. One question, if you don't mind: when we're live streaming, does the camera record the video on the SD Card, so we can then work the video and then upload it to the cloud? I want to use it for online courses... Cheers!
Thanks. No the camera is not recording while using it like this. If you wanted to record, I would configure OBS Studio to accommodate for that and just record via OBS studio.
This takes any regular SD card, though whether you actually need one in the camera to use it this way remains to be seen. I know someone using this camera like covered in this video with an SD card in it, and someone using it like this with no SD card in it. Up to you.
I'm currently stuck on the Putty step - I put in my ISP# in and port # but when I click open the command prompt and after a few seconds I get an error "PuTTY Fatal Error" - Network error connection timed out. Even my computers cmd doesnt work when entering telnet ip address
sounds like it can't reach the camera. Gotta make sure the camera is connected to the correct wifi and it can be reached via the PC. You can ping the IP address from the PC if it connected and is reachable
@@CoalitionGaming My PC and router are right next to each other. The camera connected to the wi-fi no problem. How do I ping the camera from my desktop?
@@CoalitionGaming Request timed out. I'm not sure how this works. I'm on a desktop using a direct connection. The camera is fully connected to the internet through the tweak settings. I use that IP address and port # and it's just an error. All steps have worked except for Putty and the command promt. I'm losing hope in the A5000
I've now done this with a handful of A5000s, no issue. The a5000 isn't the problem, it sounds like its something in your network config not letting stuff thats wired in talk to stuff thats connected via wifi. However, if your a5000 is connected to wifi on an SSID that is isolated from the main network (a setting that would be in the router), that could be contributing to the issue. The fastest way to know if this is the issue is to connect your computer to the same wifi SSID you are connecting the camera to.
Thanks once again for this tutorial. But does this procedure work on a Mac or do I have to do it on a PC? I ask because PuTTY only has .exe (windows) but PMCA-GUI as a veresion file for MAC. Cheers!
I would imagine why terminal access program like putty would work just fine. Doesn't have to be putty I just found that easiest. Maybe searching Putty alternatives for Mac will get you where you need
@ Good evening, I just made the hack, it was very good!!! However, the frame rate was not good, a little slow, I used it on a very common Chinese capture card, if I use an Elgato capture card will it solve this FPS issue? Thank you very much
Hello. The instruction are on point. However, I got stuck on the telnet part. For some reason I can't telnet to the camera. I keep getting networl connection failed. I did checked that it is connected to the WiFi.
Up to you. I wouldn't bother with an Elgato though. The $15 cheapy capture cards like I used in this video do the job at about 98-99% of the quality a camlink would get. In this video I compare the cheapy capture card to much more expensive capture cards too so you can judge for yourself: th-cam.com/video/1nM-jkOT-Ps/w-d-xo.html&t=
I have a problem with step 5. the camera is recognized by pmca, but the app list is empty. and there is a urllib error at the bottom... how can i fix this?
Hi, my camera is showing via a capture card on discord and obs studio but the pmca gui is not detecting my camera when i select get camera info, how do i retify this?
Hey go this camera off ebay based on your recommendations. Having an issue though. Hope you can help since you're familiar with this camera. When i plug the HDMI into the camera the display shuts down and pmca can not access the cameras info. When i unplug the hdmi the display on the camera comes back up. Do you think the HDMI port is bad? maybe the wrong hdmi (its a aftermarket from amazon), wrong capture card (again amazon $15 card). Thoughts?
Why are you trying to access the pmca stuff while using it via HDMI? The tutorial is pretty specific, expand the description for additional instructions.
I Need some help so i did what you did and it worked perfect. as soon as i turned the camera off and back on again the stuff is all back on the screen why ??
Stuff will still be on the camera screen. It will/should be clean HDMI capture, so if you're just looking at the camera screen but not going thru hdmi yet, it wont look like its working
@@WayihSamuel-vu3bn don't know what you man "camera in the other camera." But the tutorial goes over everything. Additional details in the description of the video.
The camlink is just a capture card so yes. The issue you're having is something between the capture card and the PC, not the camera. I would try different USB ports until the issue resolves, or if you're using a USB extension cable of some kind, remove that or get a better quality extension.
I got it to connect now by switching the port but there is no image coming out. I am on movie mode and it is recording but on the pc I just get a black screen.@@CoalitionGaming
You do not record on the camera or press the record button at all. That might be your issue. Double check you followed the tutorial steps and you should be good. If still nothing, reset the camera to factory then redo the tutorial steps and try again
Depends on your lighting and color of light. You need to set your white balance to manual and adjust it to look right based off the lights you have, do the lowest aperture (f2.8 in the case of that 16mm lens), and the iso needs to be set based on how bright your lighting is. Usually around 400-1200, don't go too high with it. Shutter speed should be 1/60 and don't change it from that.
For the video feed only need HDMI and a dummy battery. For the setup, you need the micro USB. After you've done this, you don't need the micro USB anymore
Finally got one! Just to confirm the footage shown with the a5000 is through the cheaper capture card? I have been looking around online and they seem to be a mixed bag of works great or pass buy a cam link 😅. Thanks again can’t wait for it to arrive so I can hack it 💻
Great! Sitting at my computer, it was through my internal capture card if my PC. In the 2nd half of the video where I'm at the table, that's through the cheaper capture card
Step 15 says "Enable Telnet". Is that a setting on the camera? I don't see it. I get an IP address on my cam, but I'm unable to telnet to it as others have mentioned. I'm on windows 11. I've also tried the phone hotspotting tip mentioned by others. No dice.
OMG. I totally missed this option! I'm working now. Thank you!!! I would say to change step 15 for people like me to say: "15. Enable Telnet by checking the box underneath the 'Enable Wifi' option".
Make sure you click "other" then "Telnet" in the dropdown and make sure the camera wifi is turned on and it has an address and you're entering it correctly. You can try turning your phone into a hotspot and connecting your computer via wifi to it, and the camera to it, and then try the telnet again just to eliminate your router settings from the process (in case it has blocked ports or something).
The phone hotspot thing should resolve your issue if you can get the PC (or laptop) connected to it via wifi. Both Camera and PC to hotspot then you should be able to complete the steps.
Make sure you check the "Enable Telnet" checkbox on your camera underneath the "Enable Wifi" checkbox. I didn't see this, and it was the reason i couldn't telnet to my cam. Gl.
bk elf not found.... Putty aint doing SHHHHIIIII It finally worked after a few tries... BUT I STILL HAVE THE FOCUS BOX and other info. How the hell do you remove that?
Guys what can i do when the Kamera cant bei found on PC via the installed Programm. Even when Power is on. Do i need a Software so ist can bei schön in PC before? Would bei thabkful for Help 🙏✌️
Make sure the hdmi cable from the camera is fully seated into the USB HDMI capture card then make sure that capture card is properly plugged into the PC. If you've followed all steps, it should be good to go.
When using it as a webcam, you keep it powered by using a dummy battery like what I mentioned in the video (also linked in description). The USB cable part is just to do the "hack." It can stay powered on by the battery to get that part of the process done, or a dummy battery.
the camera HDMI output is set to 1080p. Everything else I did was just manually set white balance and iso. If you have black bars in OBS, make sure your video capture source is set to 1920x1080 instead of just "default" for that source.

@@CoalitionGaming i dont use it with a capture card, I save the footage internally and it tends to shut down:( Do you think there is a way to disable the overheating warning ? and do you find a difference between saving the footage internally vs using a capture card in terms of quality ?
@@mhergoparian174 yes these cameras are notorious for overheating if you use them traditionally to record video. No way around that. But this video is to show what's needed to specifically set this up to get clean HDMI out and use it via capture card to pc. The camera does not do any recording in this method, and thus no real overheat issue. I never really compared internally captured video to video captured via OBS Studio thru the capture card, wasn't ever my intent with using the cameras this way. The intent was to use them like webcams, and webcams don't internally record. That said, the footage that comes over HDMI does look pretty good especially if you have a decent lens. I use a sony a5100 that way, same overheating issues while recording too, and record all via capture card into OBS all the time.
Sony a5100 with sigma 16mm f1.4 lens when seated, Canon eos M6 mark ii with sigma 18-35 f1.8 lens when at the table giving the tutorial, then at 8:26 I switch to the a5000 this video is about
Retrace your steps or start over and verify you aren't missing anything. That could also mean your USB cable isn't working and the PC is not detecting the camera.
Hi, has anyone had any problems or luck with doing this hack using a boot-camped MacBook? I've used multiple cables and the gui app just will not see the camera... even though the Sony software sees the camera and transfers perfectly.... the only thing I can think is that it's not really a pc and sometimes there can be funny things with bootcamp... kinda at a standstill with this now :-(
The IP address screen went blank after a few seconds, and now I cant get back to it. If I try to redo the steps, it already has the wifi saved and connected and wont show any of the information regarding the IP address or ports... anyone know how to get this info back?
Tip for people that might have the same problem as me. Make sure your camera isnt in PC Remote mode, or the application wont recognize your camera. I set mine to auto.
Hi, I tried to install the openmemories tweak app to my camera in pmca-gui (the program detected the camera), but it won't switch to app install mode, it says unicode decode error... invalid continuation byte. Do you have any idea for that? This hack would be so useful for my streams... Thanks!
Solution found! One of my programmer friend pointed out, that maybe the special characters in my name (I'm hungarian), which given to the computer on first installatiion causes the problem. Changed it, and everything worked flawlessly! Thanks!
Just bought this camera, but I can't do anything with it, when I turn the recording button, everything soooo blurry, you can't see anything... literally. Does anyone know what's that all about??
You have to follow the tutorial to get the clean HDMI out. That aside, you HAVE to make sure it's in video/movie mode so it isn't blurry on the HDMI output. If it's still blurry, clean both sides of your lens.
Follow the hack tutorial video in the description/pinned comment. If you've already done that and you're connecting it to your PC to use it as a webcam and you're getting that error...you shouldn't be using USB at that point.
This would be the only way. You need to "hack" the a5000 to enable the clean HDMI output as detailed in this video, then you need an micro-HDMI cable (linked in description) and a capture card (linked in description) in order for OBS to pick it up. You can't just buy one then "hook it up to OBS w/ hdmi cable." That won't work.
its linked in the description. Allows the HDMI output of the camera to be captured by the PC into a USB port. You can't "input" HDMI to a PC otherwise.

@@CoalitionGaming ok, did just that after reviewing your vid. thx. Am also looking into used canon T3i.

Hi! Its HACK working for NEX5R?
Shouldn't. Totally different camera
Nice hack! Now I'd like to use the clean HDMI output through a high speed HDMI extension cable to an external monitor, about 50ft away, so I need to have audio transmitted via HDMI as well. But this seems te be a problem... Only live-view is visible but no audio... Any suggestions?
Thanks. Unfortunately I'm not entirely sure the hdmi feed includes audio and I don't have these handy anymore to be able to check :(
Thanks for the video, great detailed tutorial.
@@CoalitionGaming Thanks for the answer. If I'm on a Mac I can use QuickTime as a substitute for OBS to record my Zoom sessions? Cheers
No idea. But OBS Studio is available for mac as well.
@@CoalitionGaming one last question. Which SD card do I need to buy?
How do I ping the camera from my desktop?
ping command, in command prompt.
ping
Amazing man, I'll try getting one as many of the stuff if showed me. Amazing channel please keep it up!

Can this work with an elgato Camlink? It is telling me that my camlink is connected to a usb 2.0 even tho I have it on a 3.0. Thank you for your time.
The camlink is just a capture card so yes. The issue you're having is something between the capture card and the PC, not the camera. I would try different USB ports until the issue resolves, or if you're using a USB extension cable of some kind, remove that or get a better quality extension.

@@mrknuxter it shouldn't, just put it in movie mode then manual
Just got this camera with the lens you said what’s your settings ?
Depends on your lighting and color of light. You need to set your white balance to manual and adjust it to look right based off the lights you have, do the lowest aperture (f2.8 in the case of that 16mm lens), and the iso needs to be set based on how bright your lighting is. Usually around 400-1200, don't go too high with it. Shutter speed should be 1/60 and don't change it from that.
Do I need a HDMI out cable or just the micro usb?
Hi,
Thank you for your video. Camera in ON and connect to the PC and (pmca-gui v0.18" program does not find the camera? help

Does it work also with original lens?
Yes. Works with any lens
Step 15 says "Enable Telnet". Is that a setting on the camera? I don't see it. I get an IP address on my cam, but I'm unable to telnet to it as others have mentioned. I'm on windows 11. I've also tried the phone hotspotting tip mentioned by others. No dice.
Yes you enable telnet on the camera, covered in the video. You can find it in the "open memories tweak" developer tab. 4:30
OMG. I totally missed this option! I'm working now. Thank you!!! I would say to change step 15 for people like me to say: "15. Enable Telnet by checking the box underneath the 'Enable Wifi' option".
when I get to the point of putty after entering my iP and the telnet it doesn't work any tips?
Make sure you click "other" then "Telnet" in the dropdown and make sure the camera wifi is turned on and it has an address and you're entering it correctly. You can try turning your phone into a hotspot and connecting your computer via wifi to it, and the camera to it, and then try the telnet again just to eliminate your router settings from the process (in case it has blocked ports or something).
@@CoalitionGaming yh my pc only works with a ethernet and I live in student accomodation for college so that makes sense why it doesn't work
@@CoalitionGaming thank you for the help though
The phone hotspot thing should resolve your issue if you can get the PC (or laptop) connected to it via wifi. Both Camera and PC to hotspot then you should be able to complete the steps.
Make sure you check the "Enable Telnet" checkbox on your camera underneath the "Enable Wifi" checkbox. I didn't see this, and it was the reason i couldn't telnet to my cam. Gl.
I did this and the camera looks great, but if I wanted to stream with it. Do I leave the camera recording or can I just leave it running to stream?
You never need to have the camera recording. You can just turn it on and leave it running like that.

When using it as a webcam, you keep it powered by using a dummy battery like what I mentioned in the video (also linked in description). The USB cable part is just to do the "hack." It can stay powered on by the battery to get that part of the process done, or a dummy battery.

Quick question, so if I do this hack will I be able to just regularly vlog with it ?
Yes
Do you think that this will work for the NEX series?
This hack is specific to the a5000. I have no clue if there is any equivalent trick out there for the NEX cameras. Would have to dig around online.
I have black bars left n right and I am unsure about the quality of my camera which settings did u use?
the camera HDMI output is set to 1080p. Everything else I did was just manually set white balance and iso. If you have black bars in OBS, make sure your video capture source is set to 1920x1080 instead of just "default" for that source.

Never seen an overheat warning using it like this
@@CoalitionGaming i dont use it with a capture card, I save the footage internally and it tends to shut down:( Do you think there is a way to disable the overheating warning ?
and do you find a difference between saving the footage internally vs using a capture card in terms of quality ?
Thank you so much ! Will definitely invest in a capture card 😎 and do the “hack” !

Retrace your steps or start over and verify you aren't missing anything. That could also mean your USB cable isn't working and the PC is not detecting the camera.
The software won't install cause it says I have low battery. The problem is that when using a dummy battery, it always thinks the battery is low.

You have to follow the tutorial to get the clean HDMI out. That aside, you HAVE to make sure it's in video/movie mode so it isn't blurry on the HDMI output. If it's still blurry, clean both sides of your lens.
I connect and it continously wants to go to USB Storage mode. What am I doing wrong?
Follow the hack tutorial video in the description/pinned comment. If you've already done that and you're connecting it to your PC to use it as a webcam and you're getting that error...you shouldn't be using USB at that point.
