Track 58/60 in Chrono Trigger the Musical
The core of Lavos is revealed, as is its nature - a planet-hopping parasite, allowing civilizations to rise, evolve, advance, and then harvesting them for its own growth. Our heroes will not stand for it. And so the final battle to put Lavos down for good begins.

I notice that, at least in the musical, the final battle with Lavos really turns the final boss tropes around.
The first form has been built up as ungodly powerful the whole musical, and it clearly can back that up. Magus couldn't really hurt it, it one shot Crono, and even at the end, in Lavos Beckons, it doesn't see the trio as a threat. They are as but fleas. Annoying, but ultimately not a real danger. It basically pays little attention to them and just proceeds to begin its attack. If the Epoch hadn't been rammed into it, the future really would have refused to change.
Then we have World Revolution. It being seven on one definitely helps, but even still, the battle seems way more even. The music backs this up, as both sides sing pretty much equally. Lavos is now addressing the heroes directly, but even then is still confident that their efforts are futile. And its voice has changed. The higher, female voice seems to have died with the main, outer body, leaving only the screamo and the deep, booming male voice to dominate this song.
And then we have this song, Last Battle. Lavos is finally taking the heroes seriously, but as the phrase goes, too little, too late. They are clearly on their last legs, while the heroes, whether through generous use of healing items or through pure adrenaline and determination, are still going strong. The result? A freaking curb-stomp. Lavos gets like one lucky shot at the start with grabbing Crono by the face, and spends the rest of the song getting beaned, by clubs, losing limbs, getting set on fire, etc. He's clearly no longer the unstoppable presence he used to be. And this is presented in the music. For one, just like how the defeat of the shell silenced the female voice, the defeat of the Cell lookalike has silenced the deep male voice, leaving only the screaming monster. But even as he screams out his defiance, he is losing. And when he begins his second verse, his words are basically sung over by the heroes.
I find it interesting that Lavos actually is seemingly losing power as the fights go on. The opposite of how final bosses usually go, and yet, it actually makes sense. Afterall, the whole point of a shell is to protect the weaker parts inside the shell.

this comment perfectly explains how i feel! i was initially a bit disappointed how short this song was, but the more i thought about it, and listened to it a few more times along with the other phases, the more i felt this way about it. it's amazing to see the switch in confidences on both sides as the fight goes on!

actually, there still the female voice in the last song.
and it's also here in the "world revolution".
but the female voice is very quiet, almost blend in the screaming voice in world revolution.
the same as the booming voice is blend in the screemo in "last battle". probably because it's too fast to properly make the "booming effect".
at least, that how I hear it.

The funniest part of thinking he's outclassed, is that the sequel shows us that even at this point it's but the most minor of setbacks that Chrono and the group have dealt him. Lavos is a multiversal hive mind who can drop in an infinite number of bodies he needs. Chrono's group just accidentally pointed his attention to where the next stage of evolution was. Schala in the realm of dreams, a place outside space and time and outside of the infinite repetitions of existence.

I like the subtle detail of how Magus sliced apart both of the Lavos pods, leaving only the central part for Crono to finish. It’s fitting that Magus and Crono, both of whom suffered the worst of the ones in the fight, both got to strike the finishing blows, as Lavos would just have revived if Magus had not struck that blow for freedom.

I love how this gives Lavos a sense of sentience when no one really knows if that was the case. It feels like he’s finally given in to his anger that these beings, these humans he has chosen to evolve, who he’ll eventually destroy when he surfaces, are fighting back against the will of what might truly be just his life cycle. Some people believe it’s one or the other, but I firmly believe that he may just be following his life cycle, but he is also sentient, and now he’s fighting to put the humans he allowed to evolve back in their place. I do have one question though: why have it seem as though the centre pod is the real Lavos when originally the fight is meant to be an entire ruse?

    • @aceofflames4572

    • @FFgamesftw
      @FFgamesftw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

I've always seen is that the centre pod is truly lavos and the "core" is just what allows him to revive (yes it has more health than the central pod but the bulk of the offensive abilities are by the central pod) so until you can take that out you can't win the fight. Although I wish the fight wouldn't have ended until all 3 parts were destroyed.

Something funny to see is how Lavos' reaction evolves during the three phrases. During Lavos Beckons, he was slow, barely noticing the party and focused on how it was useless for humans to fight him as he was exterminating them. In World Revolution, he goes way faster, taking the party seriously but still not talking directly to them as if he thought they were random humans. And now, during the Last Battle, he finally snaps, realizing he's in real danger and talks directly to the party.

@@ScorbunGame While I do think Lavos is evil, I don't feel that is a proper 'message', given that its especially vague and when applied, becomes antithetical to nature. To thrust this forced morality onto life is contrary to how nature operates. Had their been no predators or parasites, life would not have evolved from single celled producers. Nature thrives off eating itself. In the case of Lavos, he's a threat to the entirety of the cycle, but nature itself doesn't care about casualties or individual lives, thats a human trait.
I'd argue regarding sapient species, humans and what have you, yes morally speaking we shouldn't intrude on other lives, but nature doesn't play by those rules. Its arguable whether Lavos could be considered a natural part in the grander scheme of the chrono universe, but on the surface of it lavos doesn't appear to have any cycle of life beyond its own spawn, which go to simply wipe out life of other worlds until presumably nothing is left.

    • @ArcCaravan

Lavos is no more wrong than a predator eating prey or prey that doesn't want to be eaten. Just because nature isn't pretty doesn't mean it deserves to go extinct. Lavos vs the party isn't good vs evil, it's survival where the party are outsiders of 1999.

I really loved the counterpoint when the two sections came together: Lavos' furious, frantic, almost percussive in contrast with the heroes' melodic lines really came together well. The switch between the duration of their lines (with the heroes switching to the beat and Lavos to those higher prolonged notes) was also very ear-catching. Well done! I don't think I could have asked for a better way to do the end of Lavos, and all the singers did exceptionally well! (Also I'd love to give a shoutout to the artists, you two really popped off on this video! Probably some of my favourite artwork thus far.)

It’s cool to see Lavos’ anger and frustration in his voice and dialogue. To him, this is his natural life cycle. He’s a creature who’s purpose is to develop life on a planet and consume it to continue his species. In his eyes he’s only doing what he was made to do, and these creatures he developed are trying to stop it. He calls them cattle because that’s what they are to him, and his question of “whether cattle has the right to choose if they live or die” shows the irony that humans are fine breeding and growing animals for slaughter, but when it’s then you for the slaughter they fight back. It gives Lavos a bit more personality than “evil monster destroys world.” He’s simply following his animalistic instinct to continue his line of species

I never saw lavos as evil, i always saw it as a force of nature style antagonist.
It's a bit of cosmic horror when you think about it, an entity that cultivates life on planet for millennias and generations to come, only for them to be eaten, and then it reproduces, meaning lavos isn't the first or last of it's kind, it's just another world ending parasite from it's species.

65 million years of manipulation and slumber all comes crashing down. I can see a bit of Lavos' frustration how now things are falling apart for it. Seeing the hubris of man in the Age of Antiquity, it doesn't take much for it to see that humanity has a lot of potential for its all-you-can-eat feast in the long run, but now it sees what its like to be the one told "the future refuses change." I'll be honest; I had low expectations for this song when I heard Chrono Trigger the Musical was in the works three years ago. I couldn't see how this could be developed into a song with a comprehensive melody akin to the other songs in the game.
Fast forward to now and watching countless videos made by MOTI, I've learned that songs aren't just about a pleasing melody to the ears. It's about the timed inflection of the singers' tones; the choice of words for the lyrics themselves; the meaning of the words when used in context to a selected moment.
This song is just as if not more intense as "World Revolution" in that the words sung by both the crew and Lavos are conflicting with each other. A clash of ideals brought together in a moment that defines life and death for all involved. A battle where one life creed survives and another dies!
P.S., Lavos' first couple lines of lyrics is so reminiscent of Flowey from Undertale when Frisk fights him. Nice touch in that subtle connection between the two.

"Guys? Biologically speaking a creature only grows spikes all over it's body so that predators find it hard to swallow."
Given that canon Lavos is not sapient and acts only animalistically and instinctively, what the heck preys on his kind?
Because if the best means of survival includes being the size of a dino-killer meteor, hiding in whatever planet you land on for eons, and draining every drop of resource from the planet before spawning and moving on, that implies, to me at least, a vindictively patient predator engineering their prey to be harvesting drones on a planetary scale.

Well, recall that lavos is stealing dna from other creatures, so its entirely possible that the form we see of lavos is just the result of dna stealing from the previous world. Its also possible that the spikes and shell are more to just help it dominate the lifeforms it comes across. Between trigger and cross there isn't really anything to support the idea that lavos has a natural predator (And I doubt that designers of lavos intended for that to be the case, I mean plenty of things have spines and weird designs like the fiends.)
The spikes could simply be just to help it reinforce the shell and absorb damage from when it impacts a planet.

@@ZacSunTiBidea I think it could be the result of Lavos' species possibly having evolved from space-faring fauna. There's not much food in space, so Lavoses could have evolved to drift the vacuum in hibernation until a planet's gravitational pull drags it in. It must have some kind of sensors to wake it up when that happens. And finally, when it's time to spawn, a Lavos uses its remaining energy harvested from the planet to launch its spawn at escape velocity, and the cycle continues.
So it all comes down to how in the world did life even begin in the vacuum of space, disconnected from any surface or planet. Maybe the genetic line is super ancient, happening by chance in the early days of the universe when it was more compact?

A lot of people think that Lavos tried to destroy the world out of instinct, but a lot of his lines implies otherwise, "Devour till no Hope remains" implies that Lavos might be some kind of nihilist who sees life and hope as "meaningless", "On this day, we see we say, that everything can burn" indicates that Lavos might not really be motivated by animalistic instinct but a desire to watch the world burn, "At the End of time all Life and Hope will surely fall" further implies Lavos's possible Nihilism, "This Planet was always MINE" is an obvious sign that Lavos views himself as above everyone else, "Everything was My Design" further indicates that Lavos does have intelligence and sentience, it also implies that he masterminded all the events that led to the the World being destroyed in the original, putting all those hints and Lavos's life cycle together, I personally think Lavos is really a nihilistic harbinger of death and destruction who destroys entire worlds to preserve his own immortality and takes twisted and sadistic pleasure from it.

In the previous songs regarding himself, Lavos had a droning, unemotional voice, er voices, to display that he viewed everything else as beneath him and how the heroes' efforts were futile. It's only here, after Crono and crew have broken through his shell, literally and figuratively, that we see his inner rage on display. His plans are in danger and he'll be damned if he lets these heroes undo everything he accomplished.

Having watched this for... the 300th time or something, I noticed something I haven't seen pointed out, the refrain of the cast is placed in the order of them joining the party for the first time.
Starts with Crono - A purpose in time.
Marle joining at fair - We've searched, now we find
Lucca joining in Middle Ages - A way to stop your crimes!
Frog joining in Middle Ages - Reclaim our design!
Robo joining in Future - To save everything!
Ayla joining in Prehistoric Era - Together we sing!
Magus joining in Antiquity - For our destiny!
Everyone - We let freedom ring!
    What a neat little touch!

My three favorite things about this are the classic 90s Sci-fi synths that play during the beginning (gives it that classic, well, 90s Action Sci-fi feel which is just SO GOOD but so rare nowadays!), the badass/cool interpretation of Lavos' form in the art which makes it *chef's kiss* perfect, and the way that Lavos has the complete and utter mental breakdown was just amazing.
The way it abruptly screams after it just silently stares at everyone during their monologues, only for it to immediately begin to sing hard and fast about how this plucky band of heroes has ruined everything and what right do they have to try and kill it being cattle, just gives off the impression that the reason it was silent up until the scream was because it was SO DUMBFOUNDED and pissed off by losing its shell and prior form that it took Magus once again proclaiming Lavos' death to get it to snap out of its stupor. It has the sort of energy where it's like 'wait, is this actually fucking happening? Did I just lose my outer defenses and get my core exposed to a bunch of inferior life-forms that are standing around *moralizing* about my species' evolutionary habits? DID THAT FUCKER JUST SAY THEY WERE GONNA KILL ME IMMA FUCKING WRECK THEIR SHIT IN-'
And then Crono and pals come in and the redhead's face, as another commenter put it, was like 'I LIVED BITCH' and caused the demonparasitealien to explode. Short or not, this was amazing and as perfect as anyone could reasonably be expected to achieve.
