Took the risk and bought the P43s (Lenovo's first thin 14in workstation, 2 generations older than the P14 G2), it's pretty good, but could be better, especially the performance. Glad to see they improved!

I got the same model but the iris x integrated graphics 500gb of storage and 16gb of ram runs pretty well. It’s way better than my old laptop p40s which broke, the screen from the bottom right was teared from the metal compartment holding the screen, was teared from normal use, and was heating in light use like google but was not slow it’s pretty powerful but this new laptop is amazing keep in mind i have only had it for 1

Did I get it right, it broke close to the hinge ?! Do you always open/close it from the top of the screen (where camera is) ? I seen many people have this habbit to close the lid grabbing it from anywhere, including closer to the hinge and I think that makes a huge diference.

Great review Andrew! Please ask Lenovo to send you the X1 Extreme Gen 4 or P1 Gen 4 when available. Don't get the 3080, i think a 3060 or 3070 would be better for its thin chassis.

Nice PC. For what one is paying for this unit the webcam (720p) is mediocre. The microphone sounded quite muffled. They need to improve these. Like the upgradeability of memory and other components. Great review as always.

I have a Lenovo P1 Gen 2 workstation, and the worst thing about the laptop is the temperature management, the computer under heavy loads increases the temperature and is slow.

Can if support two additional displays w/o docking station ? Like hdmi and usb-c and build-in ?
Also, what about keyboard and that cheap plastic it is made of. Is it better ? In my previous T490 arrows simply...fell off after medium usage.

  • @hjups

I think you understated the thermal issues / design. The fan is okay, but the biggest problem is that there is that single shared heatpipe. So you have the case where the GPU steals cooling away from the CPU, or the CPU ends up heating up the GPU (even when it's not under load). And it does become very uncomfortable when placed on your lap, even when not under full load (web surfing and video playback). There's also the issue that there is only the one fan, so if your leg blocks the intake below it (which is a natural place for your leg to go on your lap), then the laptop effectively becomes passively cooled. I think this laptop makes more sense without the GPU (because of the cooling solution).
One of the contributing factors to the not so great GPU performance is that it uses a PCIe Gen3 x4 link, and the GPU doesn't output directly (so that link is used to transfer the framebuffer as well as any graphics commands to draw). The CPU and GPU both have the ability to run in Gen4 x16, but for some reason Lenovo didn't configure it that way.
For the battery, I found that I had to boost the battery performance up to a minimum of "Better" with zoom calls, and at that setting, I was only getting 4.5-5 hours of battery (with FHD 150 nits too). For the performance, I would have expected a longer battery life.
*Writing this from my P15sG2 (effectively the same unit), which I plan to return and replace with an X1EG3 for almost the same price. Honestly, I'm not sure what the P15s market is (considering the X1E and P1 line).

I have the Gen 1 model and the battery life is not that great. Of course I was running 3 virtual machines one of which was a server, teams, firefox and it only lasted about 3 hours. With normal use I get about 5 hours. For the rest it's an awesome laptop and never had any issues of slowing down even with all the virtual machines and teams and firefox running.

I hate the USB-C power adaptors they provide. I had a Lenovo laptop of this Gen and the port simply crapped out and nothing could be done to fix it because the power port is soldered directly to the motherboard. This is not an acceptable design for a workstation and I would never buy a Lenovo with this kind of charger

  • @bencze465

I actually have the p14s which im told is pretty much the t14. Camera and microphone are infuriatingly shit, I can't understand why release something like this in 2021. Also I'm not happy for soldered ram, should have 2 slots so you can maybe install ram of higher frequency as well. Also it should have 2 ssd slots really, with the tiny nvme slots that's no excuse.
I have the amd/5850 one and there is 1 curious positive, i was able to swap the crappy realtek wifi card for an intel one. The ufl connectors are a bitch to connect i was a little scared at one point but somehow managed to connect it. Support for the realtek should come next Linux kernel, in 5.16 in a few days, by actual Realtek developers and that may drastically change the usability of Realtek devices. I installed a dkms enabled package from the AUR for Manjaro and it actually worked but I already had the intel ax210 in mail so swapped it out. Nevertheless the option to change it is important, if not else maybe Openbsd folks or whoever may use it or other Linux distros that stay with older kernels.
I chose this machine because of the perceived Thinkpad build quality (I used t400, t430?, x230, x270 in past at work and was generally happy with them). I happen to hate every other notebook keyboard, this is also just tolerable lagging behind the 'original' thinkpad one (x220?) but it's still OK to write on.
My screen is the base 300 nit one and it has horrible colours, it basically has a quite strong yellow tint somehow. Maybe I will ditch the warranty and get the Innolux 400 nit low power panel from aliexpress and get it installed by someone that has routine at it.
You look like Robert de Niro.
p.s. I got the amd ryzen 7 5850 with 16+16 gb ram, base 256gb ssd, 300 nit 45% ntsc 1080p ips screen, rtl 8852 wifi, for 1400 euro. Got a 2tb Samsung 970 evo plus and Intel ax210 wifi and installed it today. Lenovo had 6+ weeks quoted on their page so this was a fixed config from some store so I took what I could, if I could I would have upgraded screen and swapped the keyboard to an ANSI one. A bit annoying to try and identify which is Print screen key on a german layout but ah well.
