Hey Josh, thanks for the review. The reason why you are seeing a large performance difference in your MySQL test is most likely related to the different file systems as well as the operating system kernel's handing of file operation.
Great detailed review. Thank you! Intel will really be hurting as they have virtually nothing better to offer now both on the desktop and notebook side!
I've been anxiously waiting for this review, thank you for making it! The bezels and audio are a bit of a downside, but the combination of the Ryzen CPU, 14" 400 nit display and the great ThinkPad keyboard make this machine perfect for coding.
Why do you describe the audio is a downside on this laptop? Speakers are very important to me as I am using screen readers all the time, could you please let me know what’s the problem in the audio of that laptop?
@@nohafouad7916 it only has downfiring speakers (as compared to front firing speakers in the T14 or newer carbon X1 models), and apparently they also aren't all that great. It may be worth to wait for the next generation of X1 carbons hopefully equipped with the new intel 11th gen processors as I find those to be a more appealing product in general, but this is for nitpicking reasons more than anything else. But if audio quality is really important to you, I'd suggest you get an X1C.
I just got a T14 i7-1260p for $400 on FB marketplace. Spent another $140 putting in a 1TB NVME and 32GB more ram bringing it up to 40GB. I have a feeling I will be using this laptop for the next 10 years.
I am narrowing down my next laptop between an elitebook or a lenovo! Elitebooks are cheaper but dont have the classic thinkpad look. I need a 300 nit + screen so for lenovo that limits me to the T14 or the X1 Carbon. The T14 is not as nice as a carbon but you get much better CPU and GPU power.
@@kakashi99908 Honestly the screen on the T14 is gorgeous (1920x1200) and great for reading. My T14 is a secondary computer so I don't need a dedicated GPU. That being said it still plays Skyrim, GTA V type games just fine. The main reason I got the T14 was because a guy was selling it cheap. If I had the choice I would probably go with the X1 Carbon.
BaRRmaley P1 Gen 2 - Please a BIG NO. Unbelievable quality control on this laptop from GPU coil whine, SSD coil whine, screen flickering, ridiculous battery life to apps freezing and trackpad lag. It went for a return in 2 days. I am now going back to either T14 or T14s and it will be Ryzen definitely.
BaRRmaley Nice. I returned my fully specced ThinkPad T14s (AMD) because it was my first laptop and found the fan having a bit whining sound to it. However after experiencing P1 Gen 2 for 2 days, ThinkPad T14s (AMD) feels like heaven.
I ordered me a thinkpad T14 Ryzen 7 with 16gb onboard plus a 16gb module (the education model with an upgrade to 32gb ram) because i really need the rj45 ethernet port. @@jesperjoki6682 its kinda like the more premium version of the ideapad 5. The screen is great 300 nits 100 srgb FHD. Though intel models have UHD models.
Thanks Josh. After this watching this video, I ordered the E14 Gen 2 with the 4700u, 512 GB ssd and 16 GB ram. This will be my main laptop for programming. The ram is 8gb soldiered and 8gb sodimm. I am happy to get the full DDR4 low latency RAMs and not the high latency LPDDR4 ones. I heard that there is a potential performance issue with Ryzen 4000 series processors and high latency LPDDR4 rams as present in some notebooks. It would be great if you can test this on the 4500u and 4700u with both dual channel and soldiered configs and make a video.
Thinkpad keyboard is the best keyboard i ever used.. every stroke feels satisfying.. other brands keyboard felt like typing on a piece of paper.. i hope the next iteration has smaller bezel, better colour accurate screen and upgradable ram.. another wishful thinking is to get mx450 gpu although the built in vega is more than enough for my casual gaming
About G14 Josh, it is louder only when you use graphic card in it. Agree that keyboard brightness isnt that good comparing to T14s, but for that you get better screen with higher frequency with better color accuracy, high performance CPU( which is better for future) GTX/RTX card if you want to play a little or use CAD (but some people will need to do it in headphones :D ) and better build materials ( magnesium alloy vs smudgy plastic chassis in t14) for the same price
@@maylinfu789 Thermals are good, no throttling and the case is not hot. The CPU temperature is high when hamerring it but the fan noise is minimal. Running Cinebench over and over again gets similar results so no downgrade in performance.
Did you test Premiere Pro with Mercury Playback Engine (GPU Accelerated) option enabled in project settings and Hardware Encoding in export settings (it works on AMD since v14.2)?
Are there any issues using 2 QHD external monitors on a non-thunderbolt laptop? If not I'm definitely throwing arch on this for my next development laptop.
I got the Yoga Slim 7 (4700U) And I think it is the better choice given the price (~1000$ for the YS7). (Assuming it is available for purchase) the keyboard is still good (not as good, but still...) As I can see the 16 threads do not do too much for the performance. The display has 100%SRGB (not touchscreen though) The speakers are also great and I guess it is a personal preference but I like the aluminium build. Also The YS7 does not have a fingerprint scanner which may be a big downside for some. + it is limited to 16GB of RAM, so if you need more T14s is better for you.
I'm generally happy with the build quality of the Ideapad 5 14, it is actually a metal chassis (though there are plastic versions). The exception is the trackpad. While it is very smooth feeling and accurate, it suffers a slight looseness feeling on one side. Not enough to send it back but it reminds me of the difference compared to a Macbook. If the touchpad was solid feeling all over it would feel like a much more expensive machine than it is. Speakers are only OK, and not very loud. Oh and startup time on mine is only about 7 seconds compared to the 21 sec that you got. I've become hooked on your reviews by the way! Great job!
What are the minimum specs for Autodesk CAD and Revit? I cannot find anything about graphics. Would a AMD Ryzen 7 with Radeon Graphics be enough (with 16gb ram)

Hey Josh, thanks for the review. The reason why you are seeing a large performance difference in your MySQL test is most likely related to the different file systems as well as the operating system kernel's handing of file operation.
I love Josh reviews cos he is annoying very particular I like people who are very picky and he is very very picky I like the details of your review
Amazing laptop I really like it thank you for review
Thanks for this. I'm looking to buy one soon
5th, I want to but an Asus Vivobook S15 for programming, but now hell Nah!, prefer this, but I wished it was less expensive
Great detailed review. Thank you!
Intel will really be hurting as they have virtually nothing better to offer now both on the desktop and notebook side!
I would like you to review some Chromebook laptops.. they are just more affordable and a lot of people use basic stuff.
How about the Thinkpad X13 AMD? Waiting forward for your review on that and the comparison between the two. Thanks for awesome review anyhow!
Idk why but I feel the josh's lack of hand movements while talking strange
He got that head movement, though.
Thanks for pointing it out now i can't unsee it xD
He glues them down to the table.
@@jinraigami3349 that makes it even more wierd. He seems like a robot with only moving part being his head
Great review, as usual. It's nice to hear an opinion from someone who has similar laptop usage patterns as me.
But if audio quality is really important to you, I'd suggest you get an X1C.
great review as always
Nitpick: the P series is the top tier Thinkpad, not the X series.
depends how u define top tier
@@CmeToThDrkSide not really. P series go up to $10,000 or more
Your videos are the best bar none
Why is this not good for video editing? Thank you for sharing your knowledge - great videos.
What are you using it for?
Waited for this review to make a final decision :) 32GB and the brigthest screen is my choice. If it's bad - I'll order P1 gen2 :)
@@fedalwawrinka7549 I've already ordered T14s Ryzen 4750, but it's expected to be shipped October 22.
BaRRmaley Nice. I returned my fully specced ThinkPad T14s (AMD) because it was my first laptop and found the fan having a bit whining sound to it. However after experiencing P1 Gen 2 for 2 days, ThinkPad T14s (AMD) feels like heaven.
Ryzen in a Thinkpad P1 chassis would be 🤩
IT'S THE T-SERIES

What you think about the Lenovo Thinkpad E14 with i7 10th gen, 16gb ram ddr4, 512ssd
I ordered me a thinkpad T14 Ryzen 7 with 16gb onboard plus a 16gb module (the education model with an upgrade to 32gb ram) because i really need the rj45 ethernet port. I expect it to have about the same power and can't wait for it to arrive, i'm so excited. (upgrading from a dell Latitude E4300 from 2010 and going to sell all my desktop computers)
Watch my video dropping tomorrow morning. You will be happy with your purchase
Slim 7 maybe next :) ?
Nah kind of overpriced
@@andriasdickson7129 I bought mine with a superior R 7 4800U, 1TB M.2 SSD, 2 Fans and other specs similar to this Thinkpad T14s For $1100. It's not overpriced, please do your research before you comment.
What would you recommend for video editing?
Enrico T is it good, quality wise? And screen Wise?
Heard that too, this RAM is questionable at least
Thinkpad keyboard is the best keyboard i ever used.. every stroke feels satisfying.. other brands keyboard felt like typing on a piece of paper.. i hope the next iteration has smaller bezel, better colour accurate screen and upgradable ram.. another wishful thinking is to get mx450 gpu although the built in vega is more than enough for my casual gaming
16:10 display, 2 ssd slots, dedicated gpu, non soldered ram and that thing will kill the market
Just give me non-soldered RAM and I'd buy it right now.
I think u would love the legion 5 pro. Maybe a downgrade on keyboard and weight.
For everyone, the best is Zephrus G14. At 1000$, it's the best I got in India. Asus + AMD nailed it.
Guess it's 1100USD. How is the battery life? Can the external GPU turned off, for better battery life.
Lol dude. Asus has done a mistake in India by overpricing it. Which world are you in sir
@@saiki4116 5-6 hours on moderate usage. better then Macbook Air and better then all Gaming laptop.
@@MridulKaimal $1100 is equal to 84k. I bought in 80k. Which world are you in. LOL
@@abhishekchowdhury6094 you got the spec sheet wrong. Lol.
Great review!
Great review! How about looking at some Eluktronics laptops, such as an RP-15 or Mech-3?
I got a T14 with a Ryzen 4750u, 400 nits display, 500gb ssd and it's great. It also has front firing speakers. The display is more color accurate.
Thanks for the info man I needed it
How’s the thermal? I got a X1, it overheat crazy and had to return it. I am considering to get a T14 as it has two heat pipes.
Nice video mate
Actually they fully support Linux.
Do they support Linus?
Joe S. Maybe I just don’t hear about problems with mobile zen2 and this laptop still unavailable in my country (
@@joes. Linux works great as long as you run a newer kernel. Ubuntu out of the box probably isn't great, but Arch and other more updated distros work.
@@joes. Good old Linux and screen tearing isn't exactly new. Tried wayland?
@@joes. Sure, I see what you mean :) Out of the box is probably a couple of months away.
Good video, unfortunately i bought the intel edition because I got a crazy deal on the i7.
Are there any issues using 2 QHD external monitors on a non-thunderbolt laptop? If not I'm definitely throwing arch on this for my next development laptop.
Can't wait till you get the new hp elitebook 855 g7 into your hands! :D
Great job!
Please do something about the audio / reverb. Otherwise thanks for the video!
Agreed. Moving to a different place in September and will install sound insulation. Expect an improvement around October
What are the minimum specs for Autodesk CAD and Revit? I cannot find anything about graphics. Would a AMD Ryzen 7 with Radeon Graphics be enough (with 16gb ram)
