I never thought I'd hear a NEW tape delay unit and yet that day has come!
I was thrilled to try out this masterfully made Echofix EF-X3 and put it through some odd challenges.
This unit was inspired by the Roland Echos of old like the RE201 and 301 and shares a lovely BBD Chorus (like the 301) and REAL Spring reverb.
    Tasty.
I love that Echofix did not stop here however but added powerful new features such as CV control of speed and feedback which I demonstrate can take fast incoming LFOs to add vibrato and slow and subtle signals for the joy of tape flanging if doubletracked in a DAW. That's already huge news to me but the EFX3 also has 4 outputs, 1 for each playback head and this hugely opens the possibilities for stereo (and indeed QUAD) effects madness. I try plugging each output into its own speaker to create surround sound which is then captured by a 5th head.. the Neumann KU100 binaural microphone aka Fritz.
There's a tape stop on this machine which is really ace, the unit has an auto shut off for the motor to preserve the tape when not in use.
It sounds Stella. It looks great.
    Hats off to Echofix !
They sent me this unit but did not have a say in my "review"
Trust me. It's well worth it if you want a reliable tape echo in 2023 :)
Thanks so much to Johnny Hanson for his ace guitar playing!

Thanks so much! Putting ones real head in the eye of the storm is a real rush. I need to explore more with the arrays and the head. Tbh the localization you imagine will happen is quite crude. When a speaker is behind the head then the level it generates is not “equal” vs one pointing directly at an ear. I would like to see how to make the circular pans really feel legit

Perhaps this is irrational, but modern tape delays always seem to have some weird proprietary tape cartridge thing, which is a bit worrying - I don't especially want to spent silly money on a delay unit only for the company to fold and then be unable to get another one of these silly cartridges when the tape inevitably wears out. I'm a lot more inclined to get this one purely on the basis that it just has a plain ol' tape loop.

    • @HANGINGOUTWITHAUDIOPHILES

@@MV-es3sk the heads are definitely more full range on the new machine so I’d say if you boosted the mids an lot on the source before hitting the machine and cut the lows it might help to force a little grime !
