Brilliant! It needs full and undivided attention to read between the lines and decipher Jaishankar's doctrine well hidden under his vocabulary of jargon. It may need more than one viewing, but an in-depth understanding makes us appreciate his brilliance, intellect, and Modi's understanding of such delicate mechanisms and complex games on the World chess board.

A great and erudite summary of India’s foreign policy. Agree that India and China should collaborate on climate change, total of 2.6 billion people. India should focus on the several disruptive innovations happening in renewable energy, replacement of fossil based products like plastic, non polluting innovations (e.g., textiles grown from waste milk, leather or cotton grown in labs, non toxic liquid CO2 to wash clothes, etc). Such climate change innovations will grow jobs and will help us collaborate better in tech transfer to several countries. Vasudeva Kutumbakam should be put into action. If the world is one family, then all our innovations should respect the five elements; air, water, earth, space, ether. (Now, there are companies planning to mine the moon that keeps the earth in orbit and balance). The soul of India is Santan Dharma...the deeper we go into it, the more solutions it will provide both for domestic and foreign policy

The call to “India for superpower” may be ear candy to some gullible soul on the campaign circuit, but in the cold light of the day it is a highly fallacious proposition. A country that emerges as superpower must be capable of standing tall on two sturdy legs,-namely a sound economy and a force de frappe,-a superior gun power. Indian economy at the moment is in doldrums our defence industry vestigial. That apart whether our earning superpower stripe is doable or even desirable is a complex controversial subject with myriad implications, one hopes to be addressed in details by Minister Jayshankar someday.

Just shows the pedigree. Jai Shankar’s father Mr. Subramanyam was the foremost strategic thinker in the realm of national security. The son is on the way to becoming a heavy weight in real politics. You need his brilliance and back ground to forge a new robust path for an emerging India. We have to give credit to the Prime minister and the security adviser Mr. Ajit Doval for the muscular and pragmatic and assertive foreign and Security policy. The weak link at present seems to be the unimaginative and tentative economic policy.

  • @monojdas-gupta5918

    For
a curious soul with more than passing interest I just listened for the third
time our FM’s astute and articulate speech to a suitable degree of delectation
as ever. However on closer inspection it slowly occurred to me that his
excellency with obvious advantage of hindsight is long on what we should not
have done in the past and short on what we strive to do in future. May be it is
not the right occasion. May be his day job precludes such public
pronouncements. What little I gleaned from the bravura of his diplomatese I
detected a preponderance on the side of clearly defensive stance in our future of
foreign policy, a kind of “fortress India” position exemplified in reference to
such remarks eg inviolability of our boundary (By extension does it mean what
goes on immediately beyond our border does not matter. What about the doctrine
of a neutral buffer state. We already lost such age old buffers in the form of
Nepal and Bhutan. Shouldn’t that cause a visceral anxiety in the appropriate
circle ?)--- reasons for not joining RCEP et al. This I find incompatible with
our “super power”(global or regional he did not mention) ambition he mentioned
en passant elsewhere in the same speech. Power has to be seen not heard.
    There is however a particular
observation made by him struck a
resonating chord with the listener. I am here freely paraphrasing of what he said
not in so many words ;-- “all bold moves are not necessarily effective move”. I
sincerely hope he has the ear of our PM to pass on the golden advise of
choosing our battle carefully, every now and then

The progress of India has negligible contribution from government. However, this is a statement of fact. The government progressed from being most negative to less negative. It's so easy to blame Indian government without understanding the challenges it has faced since 1947. I kindly request you to read "India after Gandhi by Ramchandran Guha". Your perspective of our government being negative will completely change. I personally support BJP, but I think Congress or any other parties including all the leaders this country had so far have done tremendously well to keeping one union and bring it to this stage against all the odds.
Joining RCEP would be the worst. India has already flooded with Chinese goods. Having a free trade means destroying the dream to be a competitive member in manufacturing. If we had a strong manufacturing industries running then it would have been no brainer to join RCEP and become a competitive member to supply goods to other 10 nations.
