  • Chris Solari (Detroit Free Press) and Graham Couch (Lansing State Journal) dissect an ugly Michigan State football loss to Rutgers, 38-27, in coach Mel Tucker's debut, Oct. 24, 2020 at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing. How did QB Rocky Lombardi look? What happened to Elijah Collins and the run game?

Agree but Mel Tucker is incompetent. Remember him running the most disorganized professional defenses that I have ever seen when he was the bears defensive coordinator. More 12 man on the field calls and not having 11 defensive players on the field that I have ever seen when he was the bears d coordinator.

You nailed it. Schiano was hired in December. He didn't have that much more time than Tucker and Rutgers started a new QB as well. Plus Tucker had a better base to build on considering that RU has been one of the worst teams in Div-1 for many years.

Dopes that think Lombardi was reasonably good, thought too, Lewerke was really talented. Goes undrafted & can't even stick to a practice squad a few weeks, because he always sucked with footwork & accuracy, better OL or not.
Lomardi suffers exact same problems, can't see the field, can't accurately hit medium & deep routes. So stuff box & blow up the run, making poor OL look even worse, and play tight coverage, even when no help, making receivers look bad. Because even if you get beat, QB won't see it, or deliver it.
Like Lewerke, he throws back shoulders occasionally, but mostly dump downs, usually playing from behind & D doesn't care. Receiver breaks a couple, and there's always garbage time, so pads passing stats. But you don't break 2 yd passes for 50 yf TD's vs good or great teams, hence they both struggled vs better teams. When you can barely manage a TD per game, like Lewerke, many pieces are bad, especially QB. Lomardi will likewise struggle to get 1 TD per game too. Watch. There will be 5 games where MSU scores 1 or less. Same old, same old, and QB is a major part of that problem, not just OL. Look at the one quick slant that Rocky missed by 2 yds. If you can't pass block, but also can't throw accurate quick hitters, your O will suck. And it does.

Michigan State has the the better Talent in my opinion. Self inflicted turnovers didn't help either. Didn't have a dog in the fight but Rutgers simply out coached Michigan State. Hats off to that program because Chris ash would've never help lead his former team to victory. As a Michigan fan i always want to see State at the thier highest level of competition, because you know it's going to make for one hell of a game, but I just can't picture that next week. I truly believe Michigan will embarrass Michigan State next week. My prediction is 52‐13

Rutgers came into this game no better or worse than MSU, except they were playing away. History of over 20 straight losses in the Big 10 - so this is supposed wot be the weakest team in the Big 10. Now we know that isn’t true, MSU is until the proven differently. This is going to be a very long team of MSU playing scrimmage football against better coaches, more talented and mor experienced teams. QB Lombardi might be far better than we watched. He needs better targets, players WHO KNOW THEIR ROUTES AND let Rocky Lombardi scramble and run more for yardage. He is big enough to be a RB. ** I turned the game off when Coach Mel Tucker decided to go for it on the 4th down instead of kicking a field goal to make the game a one score game. BAD CALL - REALLY BAD CALL

again, RU was COMING from *below* the bottom............... don't make excuses. And as for the second half -- Rutgers' game plan changed entirely to EAT the clock - that doesn't make the MSU D better... Going on 4th instead of FG was the GAME KILLER

Honestly those 8 turnovers were brutal it’s clear lombardi isn’t the qb going forward he was responsible for like what 4 of them has no throwing touch at all and Tucker clearly isn’t a good coach I’ll gladly change my mind if this team finishes 4-4 but it’s clear he’s probably going 0-8

  • @SeveredLegs

It was a bad loss and every criticism is legitimate. No one deserves to be fired after one game. Saban lost to Louisiana Monroe his first season. But this "pre-anti-racist" talk (with no serious evidence of racial comments brought up) about how people have to make sure they aren't accidentally being too aggressive by saying things that could be judged as a "racial undertone", strikes me as sounding like: "We are allowed to criticize this coach because WE'RE the well-intentioned experts...but if you criticized him in a way we don't feel is right, like/such as comparing him to Bobby Williams, you're potentially a racist, and you should know that we, as representatives of the Detroit Free Press, are concerned." I haven't heard anyone of any stripe mention his race in relation to his coaching. He's a positive, upbeat coach that's seen the game from a lot of angles, and he's more than enough of a man to be able to take (in this case) deserved criticism for a solid home loss to what everyone knows is a bad football team. No excuses for bad play.

As a Michigan fan, I think the real reason why a lot of msu fans are made is due to the big win we got in prime time. Remember the guy just got there in Feb of this year with no spring. msu got two good WR's and Rocky did have an 300 passing game, so there are some things this team can build on.
