While it definitely doesn't live up to the hype, for me it's not a bad game either. It's still a decent to good sci-fi survival horror that has "first game syndrome" and needs a lot of fleshing out and refinement. The performance issues on PC are pretty bad though.

I say the main downsides I see to this game vs the old Dead Space games is the lack of puzzles, less enemy variety, and less uniquely functioning weapons. That last part is what really made Dead Space what it was. Each weapon functioned completely different and affected the enemies differently. Moreover different weapons were designed better for different necromorphs. But in this game you more have just pistol, heavy pistol, shotgun, etc while fighting zombie, zombie with a revive, and zombie that can climb walls.
Plus from what I've seen of the game, takes far less advantage of unique events like it could being a totally on rails linear game. Dead Space proudly took advantage of this to add jump scares, flashing lights, showing Nicole's face on displays, Nicole coming out of nowhere to stab you in the face, or getting grabbed by a freakishly large tentacle. If you're not going to give it those more unique set pieces then you probably should have pushed for it to be a more openly explorable game.

Imagine wanting puzzles in games. The amount of horror games with puzzles is abundant and unneeded in any horror game. Make a scary game without me having to find a certain item to unlock a part of the game with having to do some kind of puzzle mini game that absolutely removes immersion and isn't scary at all. Go play the other thousands of horror games with puzzles. Not me. PUZZLES SUCK AND THEY'RE A WORTHLESS HOMAGE TO OLD GAMES IN NEW MODERN TITLES THAT DESTROY ANY SORT OF SEMBLANCE OF FUN. Take for example modern Spiderman. You get to move bs switches around and act like you're smart when in actuality you're just forced into playing a lackluster bs part of the game that removes any sort of "cool" factor. LET ME PLAY GDAMN SPIDERMAN WHY AM I MAKING A-B CONNECTIONS WITH CERTAIN BLOCKS. WTF MODERN GAMING. Stop puzzle homages. They're redundant, idiotic, and borderline brain damaging when you're thrust into such a cool world and cool mechanics only to be stopped by a fkn puzzle game.

I actually had quite a few times where items did reset. I found that items placed in the level, not normal drops, would completely disappear if I had to restart from a checkpoint. I also had a few cases where the enemy I was fighting just vanished out of thin air. At first I thought it was intentional like a hallucination only for them to respawn if I walked across the trigger area again.
I also noticed several times where boxes/doors maybe 20ft away would clearly be unlocked but would turn red if I got too close.

My favorite combo is to use the TK gauntlet to bring them to me, use a heavy, then dash up while they get up and wail on them. Once they get back up, it will be a second or two before they begin to attack you again and some enemies will even back off for a couple more seconds.

This is such a prime example of Graphics meaning absolutely nothing when the Gameplay is this bad. What's the point in a game looking this good when the combat is this frustrating and broken, when the horror isn't scary, when it runs this poorly, when the story is basically non-existent, and the environments are more linear than an early-mid 2000s Lego Game.

the problem here is there is too much melee combat. dead space had melee combat but it was very limited and only worked for one hit on the necromorphs. the problem with getting up close and personal too much is it takes away from the horror atmosphere and makes the monsters less scary. you compare that to a game like Alien Isolation or the Penumbra games or even Soma and Amnesia. you have to hide from the monsters to survive and you see less of the enemy and that in turn makes you more afraid because you know for a fact that if they find you, its game over. its the same reason Resident evil 4 felt different from the games before it. once you could round house the enemy you no longer had to be afraid of them getting too close. that is why the callisto Protocol feels more like a action game than a horror game.

    • @OnionJuice517
      @OnionJuice517 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I guess it's just the arcade'y feel of the combat, and a giant amount of it, that makes it feel like it. Getting up close and personal can definitely work, just look at Fatal Frame where the closer to enemies you get, the more damage you do. I think there could be a way to make it feel more scary in Callisto Protocol. Maybe make enemies a bit harder to beat, but also provide ways besides combat, to get around them or sth

The game is fundamentally flawed and very unimaginative; especially when compared to Dead Space.
The game is melee focused but has an auto-lock-on on your attack that can’t be swapped or broken from and you don’t have a manual dodge. What happens when a ranged attack is launched? You pray.
That is the level of control you have in this game.
The depth in the combat is staggeringly shallow, too. You have a heavy and a light attack that can’t be manually aimed and you have no input on the combos your character does. Enemies attack 1-2 times, then you counter; and maybe shoot with your boring straightforward conventional weapons…
This game isn’t worth your time.

First game syndrome is hardly an excuse - these are experienced developers, the genre has been done 3 times before in Dead Space 1-3, not to mention the rich library of games that exist to draw combat mechanics from. Its also a fully priced premium game - I really don't understand how new games can miss what I would consider "standard template" mechanics - while I understand wanting to do something new, if its not working it should be left on the draft floor. This game somehow manages to be clunkier than the original Dead Space from over 10 years ago.

Just finished the game myself, I've loved the dead space trilogy, and I actually really enjoyed this game. I felt like the gameplay had a very healthy challenging progression to it where I was dying at the beginning and at the end equally, and the only difference was me learning and getting better. None of the weapons felt oppressive or too strong, and I actually really liked the melee shift. This isn't dead space, it's a spiritual successor so the melee combat was refreshing but definitely had a learning curve. I played on Xbox series X and really had no performance issues. The game did crash twice for me but not sure if it's a game issue or an Xbox issue, neither was much of an issue. Enemy variety was a little slim, but they kept throwing them in different groups which added some interesting encounters and alot of which gave you environments to reward you for using the GRP. I do wish there was something to help with dealing with multiple enemies at once other than throwing one or quickly killing them off and avoid the melee system to not take free hits. Took me about 10 hours to complete, story was really good, I really enjoyed the gameplay, and will play again on the hardest difficulty. Don't agree with the $70 price tag for next gen, would've much preferred $60, and think the game is definitely worth $50 IMO.

Stick with the dodge system as it is... and it's fun as fuck! Truly. Just wish it didn't launch as bad as it did. Good thing the patch already fixed much of the stuttering. Also, it really needed the NEW GAME + mode on launch, as well. Bummer how I feel like it's getting more hate than it deserves. Some reviews make it sound like it's as bad as or even worse than other AAA titles launching in worse conditions with predatory microtransactions. Hoping Striking Distance Studios will update this game with more content that'll help get people to try it. I really highly recommend this game, especially if and when it goes on sale for $50 or less.

One thing that really bugged me throughout the game is how many stores are placed directly before large fights but the only checkpoint you'd get was before encountering the store.
As Yong mentioned, your probably going to die a few times during the larger fights which means you have to go through the whole process of selling loot, buying upgrades, and going back for things you couldn't carry before every retry.
Want to wait until after the fight to go to the store? Your probably out of luck then as many of them become inaccessible once you leave their room.

Couple hours in... and there's a lot of creative things you can pull off in this game... heck, even crazy combos by combining the block leg-swipe with the heavy-hitting attacks along with the proper mix-up with the guns and telekinetic pull-push powers. Speaking of using the environment, you can even push enemies or redirect them onto walls for easier takedown kills. About multi-enemy encounters, don't forget that limb shots and using ranged weapons afar or even up close are quite advantageous at keeping enemies from ganking you. Also, there's a crowd-control strategy of using the heavy attack after a light attack to reduce the wind-up frames of the heavy to hit multiple (3 or even 4) enemies at once to push them back.
    Honestly, I'm loving it!
The one thing I do agree with is the fact that this should have launched cleaner (technically speaking) on PC along with having a NEW GAME +, which I believe we shouldn't have to wait for.

Resident Evil 7 had the same problem with the molded, and while Village does improve a little, you cannot say that RE has regained the heights of memorable enemy types it once had. And the weapon variety had tons of options, that when used correctly would allow you to take on groups of 4-5 necromorphs effectively. Different suit upgrades to save for, a robust upgrade system to encourage exploration. This game just feels like such a step down from that. The main thing I took away from the trailer was "wow thats what the enemies are? Space zombies? Thats not very scary. Its sure gory, but not scary. I really wish they went more of the direction of like infected humanoid enemies that could transform/mutate a la 1982 the thing into all different kinds of horrific monsters. So you never exactly knew just what you were going to face. You could see some humanoid looking enemies then all the sudden a mutated spider faced tentacle monster grabs you from under a table, or where the humanoid enemies could mutate mid combat, so you never knew what exactly you were facing, growing like extra arms with claws or something, or detachable jaw for head swallowing. It seems like the most of that you see in this game is the monsters grow a few 5 inch long tentacles from their belly that do nothing, or grow boils on their skin that gives them extra health... They could have gone crazy with the body horror abomination style monsters, but it seems so bland. Also with such an emphasis on melee combat, it just looks so shallow. You only ever get new melee weapons when the linear path you take through the story allows you to come across one. Even then combat looks largely almost exactly the same. The projectile weapons seem almost useless, have no real "kill spots" on enemies like you had in dead space. It just seems like the developers were so desperate to differentiate this game from dead space that they just ripped elements out, and didnt replace them with anything of equal value. I'll still pick this up, But not until the stuttering is fixed, Thats a complete game ruiner for me. And since I've got a 2070 max q laptop, it would likely be unbearable compared to you guys with freaking 3080ti's n shit.

Worst thing for horror is letting the enemy get to close to you and playing them like fiddle. Most survival horror games are scary because you don't want the thing come near to you and when it rarely does you start to panic. Horror game should never encourage players to get used to be close to the monster.

Within the 1st hour, I'm dropping infected 2 at-a-time in a group of 4 in an enclosed space on Normal and the combat's running pretty smooth (PS5, performance, no motion blur). I've seen some reviews say it doesn't matter what direction you hold, either right or left when enemies take a swing at you, but it certainly did for me. I don't anticipate or expect more depth to the fighting for a game like this, however I do think there could be more situational events that can pin you to the ground or hold you in a corner that could be interesting, either with the AI behavior and grappling animations. Controls can get an alternate setting. Graphical bugs and crashes can be patched. It's the way a lot of games are these days. Doesn't make it ok, but it is the norm for quite a few top-tier titles out there. I still think this game has potential to become a cult hit. Helix Station was a good prequel series. I hope the people putting that together will continue-on with that as well.
It's not like the horror genre of games hasn't a sizable list of janky-goodness in their success stories. But to shaft the PC and Xbox players like this is unacceptable.

Dead Space also only had shock and gore as their selling point. They even made a videocam comercial for Dead Space 2 with the title "your mother hates Dead Space 2" or something like that and let elderly woman play it to show how brutal and scary it was.
Only when you played the game you understood there was a good story. At least for the secomd game. The first one was very basic and the third was ok, but meh non horror gameplay.
In the end a horror game just needs to be horror. P.T. is loved by all and is basically a walking simulator with horror elements. Only that the horror is masterfully done!

i agree with all the things said in the video. Two things i expirenced on pc alot was stuters (enebling Vsync helpt a bit with the stuters, still there but not as bad) and broken animations like enemys hiting you with a limb thats blown off or when you die you just see your guy open his mouth more and more then his head gets riped off, or the enemy presing his tumbs into your eye sockets but his tumbs are not in your eyes but a bit to the sides.
realy dissepointed in the low number of enemy variety and what feels like 3-4 death animations that is mostly guy beting you in the way som one would if they where fake hiting som one in a movie (no real impact to the blows, looks restraind). and the "quick time events" spamming Y feels impactless no feed back visually or in vibrations in the controler.
this is just all the bad things, there where alot of good things in the game to.

I do agree that a more melee-focused horror-action game sounds interesting, but the dodging mechanic sounds like a real pain. This looks like the kind of game to wait a year to get it on a nice sale and after a decent amount of patching. That shader compilation stutter is a very common issue with Unreal Engine games. It blows my mind that the issue is so prevalent, even on high-end PCs, yet developers rarely get called out for it. I would rather have full-blown loading screens between areas than constant *perceptible* asset streaming happening in every room. It's supposedly fixed in UE 5.1, but who knows how long that will take to trickle down to new games.
