I was at the Gazzaris guitar contest that night in 1985. Nobody knew who Paul Gilbert was but he blew everyone away. All the other players were in full 80’s hair metal regalia but PG walked out there is jeans and a tshirt and slayed them all.

I met them a number of times in those days. I was a shredder in the L.A. scene in the 80s. Saw the live a bunch of times. Amazing band, far better than Mr. Big. When Paul left to join Mr. Big at Billy Sheehan's urging Racer X was done. I jammed with Jeff Martin when he went back to drums. He's as good a drummer as Travis. Seriously. He joined Badlands shortly after.

Some players like Mike Batio, have figured out alternate picking direction changes that work well and keep velocity going on guitar.
After studying Paul's videos for a while, i have found playing sequences that are very fast, which are are actually hard to play on guitar.
Paul is a freak to me for that reason .
Paul's own interpretation of Fast Guitar Riffing, may be natural to him
But it does not follow the easier route to the logistics of guitar as an instrument

Pauls' use of hammers and pulls in combination with picking build some really great sequences
I do the main sequence in the bridge
      (B string) 14 15 17( E string)14

      (B string ) 17 15 14
Every note picked but with 4 notes on a string like shawn lane or John McLaughlin
And segovia actually played 4 notes per string , but it helps to use tall frets
It really works well with even numbers of notes

    Very cool!
I too made records at Prairie Sun studios. Mooka rocks!
Ive also worked with Steve Fontano, the engineer who recorded Racer X's first few records.
    The similarity ends there.

Thanks for uploading. So awesome to see this. Is the footage of the city taken at the time (1985) or is more recent? If taken at the time, why no footage of the band playing? Would’ve been awesome to see the band playing together on film. This is so sick though and I’m so appreciative for it.

I have been playing for almost 30 years and have never been ridiculous like that at any point. Paul was BEYOND ridiculous at 16...f**k me ! LOL This was still great to hear aside from the crushing blow it's going to be on my practice schedule. Why bother ?!?! HAHAHAHA

Santa Rosa born, Petaluma homegrown here.
Yep, all of those Shrapnel shredfest albums were recorded at Prairie Sun back in the mid-80s to mid-90s. Yngwie on the Steeler album, Vinnie Moore "Mind's Eye", Tony MacAlpine "Edge of Insanity" featuring Steve Smith on drums and Billy Sheehan on bass, Greg Howe, Richie Kotzen, Frank Gambale, the first Cacophony album with Marty Friedman and Jason Becker.
Y&T and Night Ranger would regularly play gigs at the Phoenix Theatre in downtown Petaluma, and they and Starship often headlined the Sonoma County Fair in Petaluma back then. I even remember Armoured Saint opening for Y&T just before Dave Pritchard got too sick to play, and The Squares (featuring a then-unknown Joe Satriani on guitar) opened for Eddie Money! Metallica, Starship, Journey and Santana used to rehearse down the 101 in San Rafael too. Eric Martin (then fronting his own band) lived about a half mile from my house--He would later go on to be the lead singer in Mr. Big with Paul Gilbert, Billy Sheehan and Pat Torpey. Lots of great rock going on in the North Bay back in those days.

@@vincentgarzoli3197 I moved to Fairfield, in Solano county in 1986 and ironically never got involved much in the music scene there like I did in my home state of Washington. I had delusions of grandeur about trying out for Metallica. I was aware of a Vacaville based band called Lawz Rockit (Jason Newstead says their bassist did also try out!) before I left home as well as The mighty Armored Saint, we had their album Rise of the Saint. I can only imagine what might have been if my whole band had moved to the North Bay in the late seventies and early eighties! I love all of the bands that you mention. Now I am in Ronnie James Dio home turf in New York State. Still rocking as much as I possibly can!

@@MichaelMaxwell747 Hey Michael, glad to here you are doing well and still keeping the faith musically. I imagine you got spell-checked on LAAZ Rockit. I remember them being a thing in clubs in the Bay Area along with another band called Roadrunner, and I think both of them had indie records out there, but no air play. in any case, I never heard much of their music.
Possessed was another up and coming band at the time out Pinole, and one of their guitar players Larry LeLonde would later play with Primus--I think they started in Vallejo.
Sounds like you are a little older than I am. I had just graduated high school in 1985 and was just a pup when most of these scenes were happening. A local guitar teacher at the Petaluma Music Center wound up playing in a glam band called Vain that did real well in the Bay Area and eventually got signed to Island Records. I think they still have a following in Europe and Japan. They also have a footnote claim to fame in that they partially broke up about the time Steven Adler was kicked out of Guns-N-Roses, and most of their members rounded out the band Steven Adler's Wrecking Crew, which never went anywhere as Adler was still deep into his addictions.
But that starts opening up a whole other book on the Hollywood/LA era of my musical journey....
