What I do when I need to trim long samples on the sp is I reverse the sample and listen for the kick, snare or what ever That's ending the sample and chop it to get the perfect loop
Hey you might not see this comment but I have a tip for making the SP say ur correct bpm - use the mark button like it is a tap tempo, just keep marking and unmarking until it shows the tempo you know the sample is. It won't mess with your sample and it works like everytime. Weird workaround but useful af to me Also I think dilla did alot of the pitching on donuts by using variable speeds on his 45 player when he recorded in. Some of the stuff just isn't gonna happen on a 303
i just use the resample method.... made hundreds of beats in the past two years on it. its my only tool now. i dont even got a laptop to upload my beats. their simple but i can live with it. this vid taught me how to use the pattern sequencer tho thanks for the upload
So I spent an hour following along with this video and it’s super helpful. One this I noticed was how muddy it gets with the Pitch shift so I used the isolator and raised the highs and lowered the lows and I forgot what I did with the mids probably raised a pinch. I also compressed it before and it really made the track so very bright. I did a few to compare and it looks like I did a good thing! Thank you for this video it really showed me my weak points with this machine and it was a study for how Dilla approach sampling.
Thanks for the video tutorial. And if you don't mind me asking what did you do to get your kick and snare to sound like that at 12:20? I've sampled a couple of drum loops but they don't sound that thick- I do'nt know the right words to explain. But the kick and snare sound more deeper and real.
Wow MG!!! Ase J Dilla... the recording technique reguarding pitch changes ans speeds could be useful in daws for a more distinctive phase sound, I'm thinking...
How do you get drums on their and where would you save the beat? I know you can get the card but does it come with it's on memory or would you track the sequence out? How much sample time does the sp usually come with? Really appreciate your response
what monitors do you suggest? I used some sennheiser headphones and realized when I played back through my Alexis studio monitors that not all the sounds are coming through. how are Krk?
MG The Future What about JBL LSR305 5"? and that vs yamaha? i just recently learned the speakers in using lowest is 56hz. so obviously that's not acceptable and i'm missing a lot of sound. should i also get a sub? or just get good speakers?
MG The Future word. in your opinion, do you think it's better to get cheaper speakers that are 5" and add a sub, (my jbl option), or get 8in speakers with no sub (yamaha hs8)?
Keep in mind J dilla was a trained Jazz Drummer, he was a great drum player, so obviously he is extremely good at freehanding, I fucking suck at it I just started like 2 days ago lol

My favourite dilla track. Thanks for the video!
The 404 never gets old. Same with Dilla. Thanks for making this video.
Still learning my 404 and this video was really really helpful. Thank you so much.

Just got one and it’s crazy haha I love it. I’ve been using it with my kaosspad just messing around. Great video by the way.

he also layered a little clap (?) and hi hat (and probably a kick
dope work flow. that sp is quirky but it seems worth it once you got it locked in. respect the process
#KeepBangin!
dope... that resample function looks tricky. but with time and patience it can be mastered
Fun to watch bro
Someone may have asked this before but are these drums the presets of the SP 404 or are they sampled drums? thanks, this is a great tutorial btw.
I would of re recorded the first sample, or played around with it till I got something a little more smooth

MG The Future I didn't realize how well abelton''s transpose work on samples... (New to 9 live). I will try those plugs on it as well... thanks
💧💧💧
OMG. I LOVE THIS VIDEO!! Thank you! lol
MG The Future ayyy!! That's what's up!! Please make more of these!!
Sarah2ill Sarah I love your sp videos too and mg this is awsome
Nice although I think he added a healthy dose of compression to that sample lol
RIP DILLA

MG The Future thanks for your response! Are you able to solo out sounds while tracking? And midi sync to a daw so everything stays in time?
Hi , I didn't get why he's triming at -30 before resampling. My english is not good enough. Can anyone explain this ?
And thank you Maschine Master for this great tutorial !
1:34 Dilla never sampled from TH-cam!
He never said j Dilla did

Not sure this as much of a technique as it is a remake thanks for video though!
Jdilla is a god
People lie (not you, MG). I heard it was actually an MPC 1000.
