    Bro! I was wondering where you've been. I see you had a lovely surprise for us. How does the ek43s compare to the e37s you had originally?
    Wait, you're not keeping the ek?

    • @iBarista
      @iBarista  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Andy! Yeah was quite busy with work and life hahaha.
      Unfortunately no 😔 it’s destined for a local specialty coffeeshop. Had it for a burr alignment and was allowed to use it a few days in return.
      The difference between the two is huge. With the same coffee the e37 had a very rich body, more chocolaty notes and less fruitiness. The sweetness was average and a hint of bitterness. The flavor notes where less distinguishable. Still there, but turned down in volume.
      The EK was very clean and crisp. Very round in flavors and high in sweetness. I could taste chocolate, blackberries, the florals and also vanilla. All could be tasted very clearly.

    I've heard the newer EK43's have fixed much of the alignment issues. Since that's what you were doing with this machine how did you find the alignment?

    • @iBarista
      @iBarista  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The alignment only needed some “light” tweaking. Barista Hustle shows a very simple method, for which you only need a whiteboard marker and some aluminum foil. Check out their vid, they take you through this process. They also have a vid on how the ek should sound when it’s aligned properly.

      Haha, helaas had ik die EK alleen om de schijven uit te lijnen voor een zaak. Maar je zou moeten kijken naar het budget wat je hebt en moeten kijken of je hopper wilt of een single doser. Ik heb daar een video over gemaakt. Kijk eerst waar je naartoe neigt en dan kan ik je er natuurlijk bij helpen :)

    You made a nice video! Noticed from your EK43S setting, your espresso dialed to number 3. May I know why my EK43S have to dial till 1.2? I would say, if my setting at 3, it is impossible for me to make espresso. By the way, my setup is: Rocket Giotto type V, EK43S dialed to 1.2 (0 callibrated), VST 20g basket, 20g coffee in, 50g espresso out in 29 sec. Thanks.

      Thank you Jinn! I’m glad you liked it.
      The coffee I was using was very fresh and always needed a bit of a coarser grind profile. Other coffees where around the 2.0-2.5 range.
      The thing is there are a lot of variables that impact the grind setting (on the ek) type of burrs (coffee or turkish), does the dial go to max 11 or 16, burr carriers, type and age of the coffee, filterbasket and even the grind adjuster on the ek43 itself etc. But to be honest, I’ve read of several cases with the same ‘issue’ with the ek43 on the forums. And nobody seems to give a definite answer to why this is happening. But as some pointed out, it might be a setting from the factory on the grind adjustment increments. That if 2 different grinders adjust by e.g. 0.1 on the dial, the burrs move a different amount on both grinders. Hope this helps.

    I heard that you shouldn't knock the portafilter on the table because it causes cracks in the puck edit: does it change the taste is any way?

    • @iBarista
      @iBarista  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never had that experience to be honest. If you tap the filter after tamping on the other hand.. I find that tapping it before tamping minimises channeling because you remove potential air pockets in the coffee bed.

    how’s this grinder compare to the niche? I currently using a niche and I’m considering my upgrade options, thanks for your input

    • @iBarista
      @iBarista  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very different profiles between the two. The ek produces a lot of clarity with very distinguishable flavors. Also a much cleaner cup and a lot of sweetness. On the other hand the niche produces more texture. The espresso has a more syrupy feel to it. Especially combined with milk, the coffee from the niche stands out a bit better than then the ek. In other words, you can taste the coffee better in a cappuccino or latte (when using the same amount of coffee in both machines).

    • @jackieliu1232
      @jackieliu1232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@iBarista this is VERY helpful!!! I always have trouble with espresso flow during my latte pour process, I feel the espresso is very thick and cannot flow/move as easy as I see some of the latte art videos, this is the first time I see someone describe espresso from niche is more syrup-like texture I think I finally know understands a bit on why I’m experiencing different pours

    • @iBarista
      @iBarista  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jackieliu1232 you are welcome. But if you have a very “thick” espresso. Try to change the ratios and weights. And usually dark roasts also add to the texture a lot.
      If for example you have a darker coffee/roast. I usually do a 15 gr in and a 15 - 20 gram out in around 15 to 17 seconds. This way i have a nice contrast and the coffee gets thinned out enough thanks to the milk.

    • @jackieliu1232
      @jackieliu1232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@iBarista thanks, my go to coffee is storyville think it’s a medium roast, I normally do 16.7g in (17g in niche and whatever amount comes out) and 30g out in about 25 seconds. On a good day my pours are like th-cam.com/users/shortsKj3GZPjMGxA?feature=share

    • @iBarista
      @iBarista  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jackieliu1232 Seems like a med/dark roast. But it takes a lot of practice. Some pointers: thick crema? Give the cup a swirl. Tilt your cup a bit more and lower the spout that it almost touches the crema. Dont over fill your jug or use a larger one. Control your pour rate; If the crema releases from the side walls, you’ve poured too little as a base and you’re pouring to fast for your art. If the art looks stringy: milk too thin. If the art looks blotchy: milk too thick.
      You could check my other vids for more pointers :)

      @@matthias67738 Most welcome! Personally, no. Don’t get me wrong, I love the looks, build and flavor of the EK but it’s huge, loud and it retains too much coffee for my liking (for home use). Since these grinders don’t come come cheap and unfortunately, I’m not made of money I’d save up or spend a bit more to get a grinder at the top level and be done with it 😂.

    • @baristakev5709

      I would assume the EK43 would be way better because of the massive flat burrs!

    • @iBarista
      @iBarista  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The EK was very sweet and was a bit cleaner in taste and has a very round feel to it. The niche had a bit more acidity and has just a little bit less distinguishable flavors compared to the EK. But was still very good!

    • @kondko
      @kondko 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. More clarity I'd say on calibrated ek43s. While the conical burrs on niche lack in clarity, excel in putting shots with rich texture/body

    I must say I've never used any Mahlkönig grinder, so I'm not going to argue the grinding quality etc. And I've heard that it's considered iconic in the industry. However its design isn't what I'd fall in love with. I know its German so engineering is what they care most about, but I still wouldn't put that in my kitchen. Hope my comment wasn't too harsh 🙂 and anyway the video is great 👍
