    IMPORTANT NOTE: I put the wrong footage of the indicator in the video. The phone video shows me with the proper test indicator. I used the wrong one on camera with a dial indicator, as Jlever correctly pointed out. But even with my test indicator, my personal ek is under 5 microns. So, the point stands, but worth pointing out! The 60 micron observation was with a test indicator.

    This is a great review, super fair and very informative. Given how big the EK is, I think a 30 minute “here’s how to fully trick out a new EK out of the box” video would crush. Links to all the things you recommend, step by step instructions to install, etc.

    Funny enough, your comment about the EK and cafe quality is the biggest reason I was reluctant to sell mine. I went with a San Remo X-One, which is a better fit for my cafe, but I do worry that people don't come in and have the immediate assurance of values that an EK communicates.

    Sorry for correcting you Lance but lathe user here... for anyone looking to do this type of indicator reading on their grinder, you really need what's called a "test indicator", not the "dial indicator" Lance used, unless you can orient the "dial indicator's" plunger perpendicular to the axis of rotation...

    I honestly can’t understand why something that’s $3000 can’t be perfectly aligned from the factory. That is an utter and absolute waste of money. What are you paying for if not quality materials and craftsmanship? A bent rod on something of this caliber seems like it should be a full warranty replacement.

    • @spookyfm4879
      @spookyfm4879 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      My thoughts exactly. For that price, I would expect every unit to go through _very_ rigorous testing, and if these things are as easily found as Lance demonstrated, then they should be at that stage. And consequently, they would then either need to replace or repair bent rods, and/or realign burrs.
      James Hoffmann makes this very explicit in his reviews of these kinds of high-tier equipment: Grinders at this level don't cost this much because they grind coffee better than cheaper ones at a scale that is proportional to their price. You pay that much because you trust the manufacturer to really put effort into all aspects of materials, construction and testing.

      Right!?!?
      As someone opening a new cafe and shopping for an espresso grinder, I'm very turned off at the idea of spending thousands of dollars on something that has major alignment problems out of the box and requires me to become an expert in measuring microns of error to then work in a series of shims to set it straight. This sounds like a nightmare!

  • @LeonardoCavanha
    @LeonardoCavanha 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Little quirk @LanceHedrick: the dial indicator should be perpendicular to the axis. The way you set it up with the gauge nearly flat does not measure the misalignment correctly.

    Mahlkönig updated their production in 2015 (with the introduction of the ek43s, quality standards went up together with the production line updates. Housings are since this CNC machine to high precision. The stationary burr should always be perfectly aligned since this. Burr carrier remained the same and it makes sense to get the Titus carrier. Accordingly mine was alligned within 3qm out of the box at least (tested with Titus alignment tool). But I actually never tested the alignment of the shaft, definitely a new fear unlocked 😂. Appreciate the review!

    Lance, I hope we get a comparison video with an FM Grinder soon.
    I don't enjoy aligning/modifying/part swapping my grinders, which scares me away from an EK, but initial reports seem to indicate that the FM build is very exacting (including their 80mm carriers being so tight that some Hemro cast burrs fit but not others, LOL), and variable RPM is convenient to have available. Finally, $2700ish USD probably puts it at roughly price parity after shipping (import tax depending ofc)

    I've worked at a cafe that had an EK but I was actually quite disappointed with it, especially for how hyped it is.
    The brews weren't bad at all but I was expecting mind blowing coffee from it and I never got that.
    I also recall that once we tried to make espresso with it and we weren't even close to fine enough.
    I wonder if the alignment on it was just simply bad...

    I feel the issue with this grinder is simply, that it was never intended as an espresso grinder. These were ment to go in little shops, that sell coffee (as well as many other things) and to grind a Kg of coffee, if the customer needed it ground. The knocker at the bottom even has a little clip, to hold a paper bag. This was never intended to hold a cup or something similar. Hence the quickly changeable grind-settings, as each customer needed a different grind size. When these were "invented" home espresso-machines (or espresso in general) wasn`t really a thing (not in Germany at least) and people mostly drank drip-coffee and similar things. Therefore the alignment was not really an issue, as you would be hard-pressed to notice that at these coarser settings. It seems to me that Mahlkönig just went with the flow and kept producing these as they always had. I don`t think it is terribly hard to design a well working espresso grinder, but they know that these mostly sell for their form-factor and also people seem to expect that they will be shitty and will need some TLC.

    Real nice to see a classic like this but from a current standpoint. The prestige the EK43 held for me was a bit dampened over the last few years because of all the complaints that came later on, along with all the hype for newer and more innovative grinders. I even remember James calling out the EK for its workflow, iirc. Still, I remember when I first coincidentally fell into this rabbit hole and saw how prominent the EK-43 was, after which I walked for the first time into a speciality cafe/roaster and was surprised to actually see one, in this country of all places. I immediately thought that they must be serious. They're still a go-to neighborhood cafe for me to this day.

    I'm thinking about changing my burr set on our EK... We currently have Turkish which gives a lot of control over traditional espresso recipes but has too many fines for making great pour over ... I want to be able to make better pour over, batch brew, cold brew and would accept perhaps having to make espresso turbo-shot style. Could you recommend a burr set that would do the job? It seems like the SSP Low Uniformity Red Speed is a good fit.

    Doesn't matter if it's Mahlkonig or what other grinder manufacturer, for that kind of money it should be perfect - it should be tested by the factory before it leaves and not sent out if it's not. There are lots of folks out here willing to spend - well maybe not $3K but even at $1K we should get a grinder that is well built, reliable, easy to use, and can make great coffee. But it's like certain old cars (Jag XKE comes to mind), that needed nearly constant repairs but somehow got a reputation as an "iconic" machine. This is not an example of great design, or great manufacturing.

I figured it would make a difference in a commercial setting if you're grinding bags of coffee but for single dosing a few shots of espresso or pour over coffee I don't think enough heat would generate to make any difference.

    I used an EK Omnia for two weeks, which I had bought to reach the endgame for myself in terms of filter and espresso grinding. However, I was quickly disappointed when I noticed that the grinder got stuck on light roasted beans. And had real problems with it, and that was very surprising given the motor and the size of the burrs and with single dosing (la cabra)
    A few days later. Without changing much: Suddenly, during grinding, there was a loud bang and the whole machine, weighing 25 kilos, shifted 3 cm to the left. And suddenly shavings came out of the outlet. Then I opened the grinder:
    The motor shaft could no longer be turned and was pressed tightly together with the Burr Carrier with no prospect of loosening and with big scratches in the burrs themselfs ...
    After this great disappointment, I wrote to the seller and was lucky that he took the machine back. Because Mahlkönig themselfs wanted to check what was wrong with this machine.
    Unfortunately, a very, very negative experience and the last one for me with Mahlkönig!

      Depends on where you are as well I suppose as this will have an impact on pricing. I am in Germany and paid 1800€ for my new ek43 - though this was 3 years ago. Adding Titus carrier and all sorts of add-ons still does not bring me close to EG-1 pricing. The nice thing about the ek is the possibility to change between brew methods on the fly. I do not like going from espresso to any coarser grind on my Weber key. Never used an eg-1.

    I’m interested in Mahlkönig’s E65S and E80S GbW for a coffee cart. I feel like it would speed up the process of weighing each shot. Is there a chance that you would review that? It would be good to get a video about grind by weight tech. (I think it will be the future of third wave coffee shops.) My wife and kitchen cabinet height wouldn’t tolerate this grinder in my home. But I found it interesting that you are now a vertical burr- only barista. I’ve come to the same conclusion.
    I’m waiting for the Mazzer Philos to ship to the US. The Zerno was my other choice, but I don’t care for the wait-in-line, pay, and wait sales model.
    I’d love to see a vertical burr grinder shootout, including the Philos and Zerno. You would have the Euro power version with lower RPM, but I’d still love to see it.
    The first TH-camr with a Philos/Zerno shootout wins!

    • @LanceHedrick
      @LanceHedrick  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I simply can't see the philos doing any better than potentially matching the zerno performance. At best. They don't add any innovation that could put it over it. And there is not real way to improve the zernos alignment system. So, assuming it does equal it, you'd have to choose between a massive footprint with an awkward dial on the back or the zerno, although it's not everyone's favorite looking one, either. But I've yet to test philos. Curious to really examine it.

    • @JonFairhurst
      @JonFairhurst 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LanceHedrick- Users have reported that the adjustment on the back hasn’t been a problem, though at least on person has set his up sideways. Personally, I like the rear dial concept because cleaning the grinder won’t affect calibration, and the threads are far from the grounds.
      The big difference to me is the auger. The compression approach will vary with bean size. No auger like that can handle a large bean from Mexico the same as an Ethiopian peaberry. The auger in the Philos is a bean smasher, based on impact. I have no idea if it’s better or worse.
      I own a dial indicator. I look forward to getting a Philos, so I can measure it.

    • @LanceHedrick
      @LanceHedrick  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @JonFairhurst make sure not to make the mistake I did in the video. Use a proper test indicator. I have one and have used it on the ek43 but neglected in the video. Lol
      But yes the auger is way diff.
      And I used the philos at an expo. I don't enjoy the back dial but your point is good re: no grounds caught.

    • @JonFairhurst
      @JonFairhurst 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chris9923 - I expect that countertop height is important. It seems like it would be fine on a standard kitchen countertop. Some cafes have their grinders on taller surfaces, and the setup at trade shows could vary. For me (6-1) and home use, I’m confident that I’ll like it.
