Had a chance to talk with Lucas a few years ago when I found out that he used some of my CC licensed sounds for the Papers Please ui. Really chill guy. He was kind enough to send a list of all the instances in the game in which my work was used.
It does so well at everything that makes a game good, and then some more. Me and my friends love playing this game since everyone can participate in this single player game.
The most disappointing thing about it was at some point you complete it. and then you can never play it again. where are all the other murder mystery games at? similar mechanics, maybe more conventional / easier to develop graphics? I WANT TO CROSS-REFERENCE LISTS AND DIAGRAMS AND MAKE DEDUCTIONS
Man, what a great deep dive! I only found out about papers please last year because of Jacksepticeye’s series, and the return of the obra dinn was so much fun to play. It blows my mind that someone can make two masterpieces like that. Indie game idea: “there is no game: wrong dimension”!
This video deserves so much more views. It was entertaining and very enlightening. I didn't know Pope had a career before papers, please. Loved the game.
I love this game and “empathy” games are totally fun. The first one of that type I played was Oregon Trail, and Papers, Please gave me a lot the same feelings.
I replay this game every couple of years, it's very fun, my question is though, why hasn't he released a sequel? I think he could've made us relive those moments with a new game. I am sure he thought about it but who know why he didn't do it.
He probably has a different mindset. I feel like shaping new ideas and realising them is more important for him. Creating a sequel for fan service or the sake of money is probably boring for him. What matters is not just to have fun and do more of the same, but to discover and show different feelings, interactions, experiences. At least thats what I take away from his games.
@@balazsdemcsak5391 I also feel like there really is no standard way of making an “improved” sequel without removing some of the game’s charm, while making a direct copy would disappoint fans for having basically the same experience. Developer: carefully avoids unnecessary words and not adding context. Russian version of the game: adds the word “Comrade” where it was not there, because they thought it was more authentic.
Obra Dinn was a stroke of genius in my mind and I really wish that if Lucas isn't going to do anything more with it that he perhaps just licenses the idea to another developer to continue to make other scenarios. Releasing one every year or two would be enough. The theme and format is just awesome, a true detective style game that makes you feel incredibly smart and stupid all at the same time and it also reflects Lucas' point about being able to step away from something and tackle something else. If you're really struggling with one part (which you will) then you can tackle something else. Pure genius.

Its insane to me that a small 5 dollar game i had found on release would grow so substantially, My thought when i found the game was "this is an adorable little indie game" and i thought it wouldnt get a lot of popularity lmao
It's funny in the end, that thing about "fun". It's probably an English language thing I guess, but it's not "not fun" in the same sense of it being boring or making you feel uninterested or that you feel like stopping. Just because it is "painful", for a lack of a better word, doesn't mean it isn't entertaining. The best works of art we've seen aren't an easy and simple watch/read too, they take some effort from the audience and that "not fun loop" in Papers, Please is part of it.

Could you do a vid on the Tony Hawk or Skate series. There older games unless you do the new TH remake but it would be really cool to learn more on how they were made.
Keep it up. Can't wait to see what you do next
Much appreciated, glad you liked it! I mainly focus on indie games, but maybe some day I'll have the time and recourses to cover more retro and AAA titles. It's definitely on my list and I loved playing the old Tony Hawk games myself :D
This game is fun, as someone who likes thinking and puzzles in a way. This is perfect!
You make amazing videos, keep it up!
Thank you very much, will do!
You are an awesome man with awesome content, love your channel recently found out about it and love your way of telling a game development story thanks for making these
Really great video! I think you're better than video game story time. Also I really gotta play Papers please and Obra dinn...
OMG I LOVE THIS GAME! Thanks for the video! Keep up with good work!!!
My pleasure and will do!
Very interesting as always! Love your work 🥰
Glen, I know you get this a lot, but hear me out
Your voice, and the video's editing make it so that this is a good video to listen to while you're doing another thing. I can not express how many hours I have spent just playing Terraria, fishing while listening to you explain the story of Papers, Please.
Hey Caleb, glad to hear you enjoy the content! That's exactly what I do with a lot of TH-cam videos so I'm glad my videos can serve the same purpose :D
@@ThatGuyGlen I am so glad I found you amongst the others. Your videos have this different level of editing, from the themed aspect from the game itself, to the title of the video itself, it all feels that you put in tons of hardwork into it. And I respect that alot.
Glad to have you! And I really appreciate you saying that. A ton of work does go into every single video, which is why I’m currently only able to make one every month or so. Comments like yours make it worth it though and tells me I’m making the right type of content!
@@ThatGuyGlen I understand that you can only make a video every month or so, but if the editing is charmingly awesome, then waiting a month for a new vid is worth it!
Perfect edit, you are underrated af.
Much appreciated!
14:43 is when the video actually starts talking about Papers please.
nice, but not needed!
I was at the GDC when lucas' game was awarded many awards that night! Games are Art.
Good work it honenstly feels like your videos are getting better and better with each upload and I don't even know how you manage to do that
Thank you so much! I try to at least match the quality of my previous videos and improve whenever I can so I’m glad it shows!
17:06 GOOD developers do this. Bad ones don't. i.e. Dustborn.
Take the suggestions!
Your video encouraged me to buy this game, thanks! I just did it xD
Hope you enjoy it!
Thank you for the video! I love Papers, Please
My pleasure, glad you liked the video!
Great work, as usual
Thank you!
Love your videos bro. Keep them coming!
Glad you like them and will do!
God finding out he made obra dinn makes me so happy I loved the story and style of obra dinn it's amazing
Man awesome, your videos.
14:00 "It didn't do well financially - only selling 60k copies..."
Buddy, I sold 175 copies of Candy Raid. I'd give my left something-or-other for those numbers.
We definitely need a spiritual sequel by Lucas Pope
you are pro bro :))
amazing video gj!
Thank you!
Papers, Please is one of the defining games of the entire generation. And Obra Dinn is a mind-blowingly excellent game as well.
