- What. All I'm saying is we watched the Uncle Grandpa Crossover episode along with some serious Greg backstory. What?
*Canonically this is Season 1 Episode 48, "Story for Steven" and Season 2 Episode 3 "Say Uncle" but HBO Max has it different, so we get this!

I maintain to this day that Uncle Grandpa is a brilliant masterpiece of Dadaist absurdist comedy that was unappreciated in its time.
I was definitely too harsh on it but it was airing oh, I still don't just love it now but I at least appreciate what it's doing
It was definitely a bit too ahead of its time. Wouldve fit right in these last few years, with the kinda dadaist direction meme culture has taken.

Uncle Grandpa episode isn't so bad when you weren't waiting like a year for a new episode and it turns out to not even be Canon.
“I can’t play with you” line from Rose sounds different to me now after watching the whole show I’ll just say that.

I think that grieving Rose and raising Steven really "aged" the gems
The Greg and Rose story was so sweet. Greg is a cool dude through and through.
I literally made my gemsona while season 1 was airing. A jade, where my gem was my right eye. This was long before Nephrite or Eyeball were introduced into the show.
14:20 I think they have the same height as always, but their appearance and mannerisms makes them look younger, which it could be food for thought? Regardless, Amethyst's long hair seems to be influenced by Greg's one :^)
also the ep is from gregs perspective so he mightve described the differently by the way they looked when he was younger
@@wolfy_moonchild Not a bad theory, but I believe the crewniverse talked about the scaling in this episode, and from what I understand Rose being in this episodes means everything is "shot" from a bit "further" away in order to get her into the scenes, thus making the other characters kinda seem smaller. They use better scene scaling methods in episodes after this one and thus don't have this issue as obvious in other "flashback" type episodes.
I unironically love Say Uncle, because it's just so goddamn meta. The "plot hole" joke kills me every time. Everyone is just exaggerated into caricatures of themselves, which is A) hilarious, and B) I find fascinating because it really draws attention to some characteristics that one might not have otherwise thought that much about thus far. I have a lot of thoughts about Steven's "exaggeration" in this episode, and how that ties into his larger arc, but perhaps that's better discussed on future episodes.
My favorite meta part of the episode is how UG says "none of this is canon-- but this is!" and then destroys _Lars and Sadie's ship._ And it's _canon_ that Lars and Sadie don't end up in a relationship.
Indeed, none of this episode was canon... except for the ship going down.
Notice how Amathist has short hair in the flashback, and she says she really likes Greg's hair. Look at her current day hair.
Marty is the ideal foil to Greg in a very similar way that Lars is a foil to Steven. The difference is that Lars eventually lets himself learn from Steven in a way that Marty could never.
The most Canonical Finally
Like we see in the episode that Steven got creepily old (so many birthdays? Can't remember the name) gem visual age is effected by their mental state. I'm pretty sure the reason they look so much younger here is they haven't taken on the mental weight of Rose's death, yet.
In the episode where Greg babysits Sour Cream, Rose mentions that gems don’t grow up. That they pop out knowing what they’re for and Calle of doing it. Steven aging himself has to do with his shape shifting and his powers being related to his emotions. As for amethyst, she’s a slightly different case since she didn’t know what she was supposed to do when she emerged. She seems smaller bc of her mannerisms and her style at the time. She has matured and found a more adult sense of style since the flashback.

"I just love to sit down and have a good time with what I'm watching and I'm okay if it's not 'good,' as long as I sit here and and have fun at the end of the day, then I got what I wanted out of the episode." Words to live by, very wise.
Honestly I feel it should be watched canonically, and not as it aired, mostly so the story is logical instead of spoiling foreshadowing events, even tho they’re small they still add to the experience once you watch it and realized they have hints about it before. Story for Steven is a really good episode, I can’t wait to see you guys watch the rest 😆

I thought "Say Uncle" was surprisingly good for a corporate-mandated episode, but it *wasn't* mandated - *it was Rebecca Sugar's idea!* 🤣 I'm not big on crossovers and non canon episodes but this one is hilarious and I love it. I think including things in it that should be in a canonical episode is part of the joke and makes it even funnier. The generally positive sentiment in the comments here surprises me - other comments sections I've seen have at least 50% people who dislike it. I'm glad Lu dislikes it less now. Sadly I never got around to watching Uncle Grandpa before it was removed from HBO Max (but it's probably not as good as "Say Uncle" anyway 😉).

I'm surprised by my current reaction to the crossover, actually. I think the more i see it, the more i appreciate it.
Working on this edit actually gave me a much greater appreciation as well - what a cool way to use Uncle Grandpa to connect the CN universe!

"Say Uncle" is one of my favorite episodes. On top of that, they actually accidentally foreshadowed a big thing in it. (And I say accidentally because it was just a throwaway joke that Rebecca Sugar said that they didn't mean to make it real.)
I also started watching Uncle Grandpa because of this episode, but Pizza Steve annoyed me way too much. I love what happened to him in this episode.
Honestly I love Say Uncle. Uncle Grandpa wasn't a show I liked a lot or anything, but it was undeniably creative. It was very fun to see this crazy powerful man go around helping kids with their problems in ridiculous ways. And I am happy we got to see Say Uncle with as many great gags as it has. It's just pure fun.
Also love the reference to other CN shows with the character names on Uncle Grandpa's list at the end.
And we get a nice story for steven too.

the writing in this show is on another level. I like the uncle grandpa episode. it was well done and you can tell the staff had fun. I'm always laughing in that episode.

I like that the creators enjoyed making it, and I enjoy that you enjoyed the crossover ep. It... took a lot of rewatching it via reactors for it to grow on me even a little bit, but I can appreciate the joy (or flailing lol) of newcomers to the ep. I like Greg's singing :D

The thing is you did watch the episodes in the right order. In the video you did after the finale they were cleaning up the hand ship explosion and Steven referenced being abducted. The season basically included an epilogue, but you watched the episodes in their narrative order.
I actually think CN inherited the whole random-humor thing from early Flash cartoons by way of Flapjack--a lot of people who worked on it came out of that space, for example Pendleton Ward did some work on the Dr Tran series. And it really shows, Flapjack has a LOT of that style of humor. Then of course after Flapjack, Ward went on to create Adventure Time, where he and later Adam Muto mentored a bunch of people who went on to create major CN cartoons through the 2010s.

I do like that the "UGRV" has a Finite Improbability Drive on the dashboard (the cup of tea with wires going into and out of it). Makes sense for someone able to alter the fundamental nature of reality at will.

Uncle grandpa is a show I normally wouldnt watch, but as a Steven universe watcher, having an off beat non cannon episode where pearl is losing her sanity, garnet actually fourth wall breaks and amethyst is allowed to be her chaotic self is peak comedey. Its fun seeing it be a but sillier than the norm for an episode. Not only that they actually do adress the main issue with stevens power....and even funnier...he gets better with his shield from this point forward. And as well if you know what happens later in series...its actually WAY more spoilery than people remember lmao
OK, so the uncle grandpa episode starts out is it not Cannon but the more things he interacts with the more canon it becomes. For example, he fires his head into a ship and sinks Lars and Sadie‘s ship after that in the show they lose interest in each other, and do not get together like many people wanted. Also, after this episode, Steven is noticeably better at using his shield.
I can't say I'm a fan of Uncle Grandpa myself, and the first time I watched this show I was 15 or 16 and I saw that episode without context and totally assumed it would be a regular episode going in, so I hated it. That said I was pleasantly surprised upon revisiting it here with you two. For it being a literal april fools episode of the show as well as the gems taking him as a serious threat, and then topping it off with the Crewniverse (oh wow I haven't thought about that word in years) actually trolling the audience by having Steven summon the shield at the end of the episode. I respect it a lot more than I once did!

The fact that people say that Say Uncoe is a filler episode but I personally feel like it’s not because after this episode we see later that Steven has better control over his shield vs bubble
Also ahahahah I actually DO have a friend who watched Steven Universe Future first, although I have no idea if they ever got around to watching SU. They have a chronic enjoyment of watching things and reading things out of order with no context lol.
Uncle Grandpa is one of the most powerful characters in fiction
its still baffles me how this episode revealed the biggest greatest plot twist of steven universe and people only found out after the plot twist was revealed
I think the person who introduced me to this show may actually have been a bit peeved that I didn't dislike this episode. :shrug: I found it entertaining. I thought the Pearl bits were particularly amusing.

Of course : this episode is filler and technically not canonical. However there are two big things that need to be addressed. First of all, yes it's true that Steven is able to summon his shield. 8:05 . It can be thanks to Uncle Grandpa but we also saw Steven summon it in the past, like when he was fighting Lapis's water clones with Connie and the gems. And SPOILER ALERT / FORESHADOWING !!!!!!! At some point during the episode, I think when Uncle inspects Steven's gem, he says: "You should make sure to get this thing polished at least twice a year." It foreshadows the biggest reveal of all the series because as you may or may not know, the only gemstones that are advised to be polished twice a year are in fact diamonds, while quartzes do not need to be polished at all.... BOOM, yeah 😅😂
The order of release gives gravity to the series, in my opinion.

listen.....say uncle isn't canonical. It doesn't have the same tone as the rest of su. but it's genuinely pretty funny and whenever I think of it I remember so many iconic jokes that people have been referencing ever since. Like Pearl's freak out in the void. And Amethyst eating Pizza Steve. A typical episode of SU, no. But valuable experience just for giggles, yes. So I say it's a good episode.

There's a theory that since gems look the age they feel (which we see from Steven in too many birthdays) after they lost Rose and started raising Steven they all felt a lot older than they did before, hence why they seem like they aged.

The problem with Say Uncle is that it is indisputably canon because it is where Steven specifically learned to control his shield ability. And everything else about that fact is left completely unacknowledged.

I would have been okay with you skipping Say Uncle, but It was probably worth watching once for Alec. I always skip it on rewatch lol. I could never get through an episode of Uncle Grandpa. I never had a gemsona but I think I might go with K2 Azurite or Rhodochrosite (Rhodochrosite cabs are more my color/style).

Just in case no one else points it out, the lady with Marty was Vidalia, who is Sour Cream and Onion's mother. Marty is Sour Cream's dad.
You know the uncle grandpa episode is a lot better then people give it credit for. Sure it’s a big departure from the tone of the show but it does fit more into the wackiness of early season one. And despite being noncanonical does actually have several pieces of lore and foreshadowing sprinkled through out it. Like mr Gus explaining how Steven’s powers work. Or Lars and Sadie’s “ship” being destroyed by a literal head cannon.
I think the reason this episode gets so much hate is how you guys are experiencing it. It was showed out of order on tv as the long awaited episode one of season two. Coming right after the amazing finale that was jailbreak only to find a gag episode, yeah that pissed people off more so then the actual quality of the episode itself. Also this is about the part of Steven universe when Cartoon Network decided to stop just releasing episodes in normal season format and started doing Steven bombs. Aka releasing a batch of episodes at a time followed by month to years of waiting. Which yeah got hardcore fans super hyped for the next release but ruined it for new people people and casual fans who didn’t wait over a year for new episodes.
I’ve said it before but the Steven bomb format is frankly why this fandom became so toxic and why people have such a visceral reaction to filler episodes. Imagine waiting months to years for new batch of episodes to get that new bit of gem lore of find out what happened to this or that plot point only to be meet with a towny episode. Which while important to the message of the show overall just doesn’t work when you’ve waited forever to find out what happened to malachite or peridot. It also caused this rift between hardcore fans who waited all that time between Steven bombs and the casual watcher who would give up on it or only catch reruns. It made fans think they were special because the stuck with the show putting it up on a pedestal as this amazing perfect work of art. Which hey long time fan and this is still my favorite show and for it’s day it did some amazing things but it’s not perfect. And I’m gonna put that down to the rushed he’ll that was it’s production mixed with absolute hatchet job Cartoon Network did with air, promoting and general just handling Steven universe. If the show had been put out on regular weekly bases like it was meant too. And not cut short because production companies like Cartoon Network are afraid to take risks it truly could have been one of the greatest of all times. But hey it’s still super enjoyable and great and will always be my favorite show especially being able to watch it now in its entirety the way it was meant to be.
In the defense of the Steven bomb there will never be a feeling like having waited forever for that next episode to then be hit with a banger episode like the just blew you away and left you speechless. I must have watched the wedding crashes episode like ten times when it came out I loved it so much. It was a magical time like being an anime fan back in the early days waiting for those bootlegged dubbed vhs to be smuggled out of Japan. But yeah it lead to a lot of problems with this fandom and the show in the end but damn it was magical when you got this moments but mostly it was waiting forever for bunch of towny episodes and maybe one gem episode or an uncle grandpa which just made them seam like they dragged on and was pointless but when you watch them back to back your like wait that’s it. I thought that towny ark went on way longer and hey it actually has plot to story overall.
Like political favors is a silly episode of Steven helping mayor Dewey until you realize it leads into Steven getting dewey to evacuate the town in the finally. Which was built upon Steven helping him in that so called filler episode. Moment like that are lost when it’s been months since the last episode and you’ve completely forgotten about these little plot points that become relevant later on down the line. When you just want to see the next big gem fight or what new lore is going to be revealed.
I really like select jokes in the Uncle Grandpa episode, but as a whole... I don't hate it, of course, but I do always skip it in rewatches.
Technically the uncle grandpa epsiode was somewhat canon as Steven got better at using shield, also uncle grandpa can actually travel universes
