It’s still weird to think that the only person shattered during the show was defeated from the person we least expect to do it

I still haven't moved on... that scene...
I don't know why people dislike Future, honestly. It's like an entire season of finale for the series. Most shows don't even get half this much closure.
For me personally, it's the best part of the series
Some people said that the ending was kinda disappointing. Because the show at this point it shows the struggles of Steven's mental state, just for them to throw it all away and him just getting better in an instant.
I can also imagine other storylines that they could’ve done with more action and adventure - like aliens from formerly conquered planets coming to get some payback on the Diamonds, or more fusions between our favorite characters - but that wasn’t the story they wanted to tell and would’ve interfered with it, so I’m fine with what they did.
Honestly everyone felt out of character and it generally felt rushed and didn't really address anything but Steven's issue's
If you sincerely don't understand, rather than merely disagreeing with others' opinions, I'll venture to submit for myself why SUF was underwhelming and/or infuriating:
1. During the regular series, Steven didn't voice a peep about wanting a mundane, "normal" childhood; on the contrary, his greatest fear was not coming into Gem powers and thus being unable to contribute to the Crystal Gem team. He didn't want to fight a war, but he recognized that there were things worth fighting (and maybe dying) for, as he told Lapis back in Jailbreak.
2. All of season four and most of season five dealt with Steven's ill-founded conviction that Rose Quartz had criminally murdered Pink Diamond. With A Single Pale Rose he and the audience learned that the accusation was false. Come the movie, and this time another accusation of malicious behavior is laid against Pink Diamond, this time by would-be genocide Spinel, again with no means to verify or investigate the circumstances for ourselves, so SUF was a case of been there/done that. The banishing of Rose Quartz's portrait to Lion's pocket dimension smacked of cancel culture.
3. In the regular series, Steven admitted that things change. This philosophy was forgotten in SUF, to the point that Steven endangered his friends after learning that his favorite ship of Lars and Sadie wasn't coming to pass. In that story, Steven is so oblivious that a once-and-done guest character has to say the moral instead of the formerly empathic Steven.
4. Instead of learning from his mistakes as before, Steven repeats and compounds them. The idea of "therapy" is good, but who on this world could begin to accept, much less understand, the problems of a half-human/half-alien superbeing? Dr. Maheswaran is concerned about Steven's physical and mental well-being and associated trauma? She (or rather, the Crewniverse) has forgotten that Connie participated in Steven's adventures, both as herself and as part of Stevonnie, and according to Connie her daughter gives her mother full reports of their missions.
5. As if smearing Pink/Rose's memory wasn't enough, the Crewniverse saw fit to insinuate (through Steven and Priyanka) that Greg was an unfit neglectful parent. There are signs that the elder DeMayos have eccentric (to put it politely) ideas, like keeping the letters sent by their son unopened, and forbidding music in their son's life. In his rage, apparently by Greg mentioning the "war criminal" Rose Quartz, Steven nearly wrecks the van; and yet it's assumed that we're supposed to side with Steven and tune out anything Greg has to say.
6. No longer the "happy warrior" who nevertheless preferred peaceful resolution of conflict, in SUF Steven evinces violent outbursts; in these rages he twice tried to kill others. These sort of issues aren't going to be solved by phoning a "therapist", an since we never learned of how he was being treated there's no way to judge whether Steven should be free to roam the land, or if he's actually "Charlie X"-ed himself from being able to live on this world without endangering others. PTSD is a serious condition, and not something to be haphazardly tacked on to an existing plot or airily hand-waved in half an episode.
7. During the series, Steven appeared to think of others before himself, to think of The Greater Good. This is supposed to be an admirable virtue. SUF hints that he should have been selfish to a disturbing extent; the Crewniverse offscreen contended that Steven acted the way he did i the regular series was only to gain approval of his parental figures; in that case, Steven was living a false life the entire regular series and only the "real" Steven emerged in SUF: narcissistic and officious, with a habit of countering differing opinions with dismissal or transports of emotional/physical violence. In SUF Steven was acting more like a Diamond than the Diamonds themselves.
The basic story of Steven Universe the series was sketched out from the beginning by Rebecca Sugar, as a homage to the anime she and her brother enjoyed as kids. While not perfect, the series was unusually faithful to previous canon, and the finale was satisfactory and moving. From the End of An Era art book, the plot line sketch for SUF reminded me of Centipeetle's angry drawings of the destruction wrought by the rebellion she'd experienced. The regular series had a fairly smooth-flowing plot; the plot for SUF seemed like a story that could be expected from those who didn't expect to have to tell one, and so merely went down the list of dramatic cliches awkwardly stitched together with voguish concepts. My face at the final scene was akin to those of GAP as Steven took leave at the beginning of Dewey Wins.
Something about the diamonds that you might or might not have noticed is that they all (even pink) had their powers flipped after being "redeemed".
White could control others but then could have others control her.
Yellow could deconstruct forms but now can reconstruct them.
Blue could make people cry but now can make them happy.
That is why in this season we see a shift in steven's powers. Because Pink diamond's abilities were based on destruction, but upon turning into Rose was based on the protection & preservation of life. And now Steven, who was born and raised within the Healing & Protection stages of his power, is now awakening his opposite and technically original form of power: destruction
(Dont know how the whole time-slowing thing fits into that but otherwise i rest my case)
Isn't it that both Lars and Lions heartbeats are slowed, therefore lengthened? His time slowing/super speed might be connected with that part of his healing powers

@@Eaten_squid_cake i am also thinking about the portal making aspect of Pink's abilities, shown via Lars & especially Lion. We never see Rose or Steven teleport without a warp pad.
As someone who basically watched every new episode as it came out, I started ugly crying after the credits. This show help me cope with the death of my dad, and I will for thank this show for that.

I’ve loved steven universe since it came out. Me and my dad worked on the road together & I would watch it in our hotel room and at some point he had no choice but to get into to it. He’d ask questions & that was literally everything for me because before I worked with him he was always around country working & I felt like we didn’t have anything im common. So not only being able to work with him was the world to me but having steven universe was even better. I only got to experience working with him and having the show as our thing for a year because sadly he passed in 2018. I hadn’t watched steven universe up until this month because I’ve been missing him more than usual. The ending to the original show had me broken up but I was okay because I still had a movie and future but I literally just finished future a few hours ago and I broke down, im crying typing this again. This show was everything to me and I am forever thankful for the memories and what it taught me. Im sorry for the lengthy message It’s just comforting to not be alone. And im sorry for your loss.
What I love about SU: Future is that it shows that recovery is _messy._ Steven's actions are heartbreakingly understandable when you remember that he was given no room to be imperfect, with so much put on him from day one, and the gems making him internalise the idea that his reaching out for help will hurt them. We want him to realise that he can ask for help, but is it any wonder he doesn't? His lashing out is frightening because we know, as adults, that this could lead to his becoming an abuser and believing his own hype. And he knows it too, which just compounds the never ending guilt spiral.
I think maybe part of why people don't like it because it's too dark and too much from a kids show. That and it's talking about something a variable and personal as mental illness, so no solution is going to cover everyone. What Steven needed was love and hugs and acceptance. But some people need something different and that's okay, it doesn't make the show frivolous. I know I'd had breakdowns similar and all I needed was a long cuddle.
It's hits _so hard_ because mental illness really can feel like this huge internal monster that hurts people, even when you don't want to. You don't want anyone to know how dark and horrible your thoughts are, you don't want to hurt them, you want to be okay for their sake and just wish it all away. You worry they wouldn't love you, you worry it makes you a bad person, you want to be strong enough.
I also love that the show doesn't end with him being okay - it ends with him rebuilding his support groups, going on a journey to find himself and going to therapy.

This is why this episode hit me so hard. When I’m in that kind of unstable mental state, I usually calm down from someone reassuring me and sometimes I do need a hug to help calm myself down, especially if I’m trying to hurt myself. I ugly cried so hard when they hugged him.
They had planned to release Steven Universe: The Movie in theaters. Apparently, after the film they were going to surprise us with episode where he shatters Jasper but it was cancelled due to the pandemic. I would have LOVED to experience that episode in a room full of SU fans. This series means so much to me.
I think they were gonna show Homeworld Bound, considering it dropped online before the other finale episodes

@@theoneandonlynutzley1946I love this scene because it shows how much Steven hates what happened between him and White, but I think it's also about his gem half. He hates what is happening, and he blames his own gem half, so it's not just him shattering White, is actually him denying he's a gem.
Girl....i totally forgot how intense these last episodes are, i am SOBBING while watching this, Steven needs a full 10 years of therapy.
I personally think that SUF was really well-made. I was SOBBING during the last 3 episodes. So many messages touched me on a personal level. I'm so thrilled you were able to experience the magic that is Steven Universe.
The problem is the average Steven Universe fan doesn’t care about Stevens mental problems. They see things as black or white. “Steven is a dick & this show sucks.” I saw so much of that & the fact that he got uncorrupted from hugs. But dude… it just felt so real. SUF is the best of SU imo. As someone who has gone through many childhood traumas I felt Steven on a personal level. It hurts to watch. But it’s such a good message for kids & adults. Ima miss this show so much. I wouldn’t mind seeing an adult Steven years later finding himself tbh. But if this is it, I think we ended on a high not with lots of closure.
Two lines that absolutely devastate me from the finale are Peridot asking "where am I going to find another Steven as good as you?!" and Garnet telling Steven that the gems are a part of all of his potential future timelines. The first had me seen incredibly hard and the second was so incredibly reassuring and jeez this string of episodes makes me cry so much
Its been a wild ride, Steven Universe Future makes people feel things that the first series (to some extent) didn't and it hits harder, coupled with how short it was, I don't think it was the series continuation that people thought it would be and that's why some people didn't like it. But for me I really enjoy it, in a painfully relatable sort of way. SU showed that its ok to be different and to just be yourself, while SUF (imo) shows that its ok to not be ok and that there is nothing wrong in admitting that to others or (more painfully) yourself. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say thanks for reacting to this series.
For replacements though with similar themes and feels, I suggest "The Owl House" and or "Star VS The Forces Of Evil"

@@XC11301991 eh agree to disagree i guess, I always felt the show was always about friendships/relationship and their progression and to have fun. I know it didn't end the way a lot of people wanted, but I thought it was fun, like a magical coming of age story.
Personally I never liked how this show vilified rose quartz. Because she really did not wrong besides bismuth and even that was just a hard decision that she got some what wrong.

a void remains... the ending was somewhat open, but it's a good thing to imagine the "what happened?" after what we saw.
This series was part of my life, I grew up with it. A series which is loaded with stories, feelings, characters who feel so close...

I honestly cried when the show ended. I got to see it's birth, it's highs and lows, and I got to be a part of the community. Ngl, kinda shaped who I am.

The first line of blue diamonds song gives me chills from the lyrics everytime. "Cold palace walls, and endless empty halls, haunted by echoes of laughter" everyday blue lived, everything she did reminded her of pink and the fun they had. It's like living in the house your deceased child grew up in, and just feeling pain everytime you look at a part the house and you can remember exactly what happened there. That's the hauntings of echoes of laughter
I don't really get teary eyed when watching shows but this show meant a lot to me, I've been with it ever since the first episode aired and man I miss these characters so much. I hope for more of this world some time in the future as a spinoff or another game (If you're looking for more SU Krysta, you could always play the Light games. The last game of the trilogy, Unleash the Light is still getting updates, there's gonna be a new character [most likely Greg to have all the characters that were playable in Save the Light] added soon).
Some fans have issue with Future, I think for what it is, it is very good but if you wanted you could pretend CYM or the Movie are the true end.
I have followed this for all the sundays and my excitement never went off, and a about the ending I think between Steven universe to Steven Universe Movie and Steven Universe Future you can see how much Steven and all the gems changed and it’s so surprising how from a sweet kid he became an literal emotional sensible monster, but I just shows how in real life people change and even if sometimes we change for the worst well obviously we’ll mature ourselves, honestly this show is a complete masterpiece.
Yh I hate it when haters claim nobody has character development in Steven Universe when all it takes is them watching the show to see the great development and themes within the series.

The best part of this HECKING show is that kids are gonna see episodes like the hospital one and realize that they or somebody they know Needs Help, and that it's okay to Need Help.
The last episode of future came out on the first day of me living on the other side of the state with family I barely knew, and the sentiment got me through the 7 horrible months I spent there. It eventually hit me that in order to begin healing from my trauma, I needed to forgive the person who perpetrated it because he was the only one that could support me and Let Me heal. I came home in october of 2020 to my father. He was the absolute worst when I was growing up, but Steven showed me the power of change, love, and forgiveness, and it allowed me to see how much dad changed and grew in the 5 years he wasn't in my life. I can safely say that without Steven and the crewniverse, I wouldn't be where I am in my recovery right now, if I would've even been here at all.
Thank you, Steven Universe. Thank you Rebecca Sugar. You'll always be a big part of my life and recovery.
I'd like to point out that when Speinel tried to reset Steven in the movie. She actually reset Steven's gem emotion progress and growth. In future we are seeing in real time Pink Diamond's emotions from Ptsd alongside with Steven's. Fortunately, Steven has a healthy support group to help him.
We REALLY deserved more merchandise for the movie and the entirety of 'Steven Universe Future'.
Steven shattered Jasper. He did something as bad as what his mother was accused of, but never actually did. In the seconds, minutes, maybe hours between it happening and Steven bringing her back, Steven was worse than Pink Diamond or Rose Quartz.
I might be wrong but, didn't Pink shatter that pink gem she made to pretend to be her shattered gem in the single pale rose ep?

I mean, I feel like I’m her time as a Diamond she probably did shatter someone, maybe not directly but I feel like it’s a pretty common thing for a Diamond to do
Well, C-PTSD is not something to be trifled with. Especially when the person that has it also has the powers of Pink Diamond. Her powers depend entirely on emotions and the stronger her emotions, the stronger the power. Steven when he shattered Jasper, he snapped. The PD power breaking open the bottled up negative emotions and it culminates into the bottle shattering and Steven turning into Pinkzilla.
I love how when white puts her fingernail on Stevens stomach, he immediately pushes it away because of the trauma from her pulling it out
I will miss steven universe, it was my favorite show, but I hope someday there will something more, even if its just a few episodes, there are still so many unanswered questions.

Well... we made it... it honestly been one hell of a ride. Revisitng this series now as an adult puts a lot of things into perspective. Im glad Steven found the answers he needed... i wish that one day we can visit Steven again, see how our little man has become.. but this is it... the end of the future, start of a new day

Now that you've finished the series, I think you should buy the Steven Universe art book! The book contains a lot of information about the creation of the series, discarded ideas, stories of the gems, the mother planet, fusions that could not appear in the series and much more!
This has been my absolute favorite series on YT!
I’ve always really liked Steven Universe Future, especially being able to relate to Steven’s emotional break later on. It felt authentic to me that all of his problems and turmoil didn’t just settle within him, but that he carried it with him and it really hurt him. While I understand it’s not some people’s favorite, I think it’s good and will definitely be rewatching
I just realised something (that probably everyone else has ages ago). If corrupted Steven is as big as the temple, imagine how big the other diamonds would be if they corrupted…

It was a pleasure getting to see your reactions to the series! It’s always nice to see someone go in fully blind and really get hit by how much layers in a lot of characters have by the end. I feel like the cookie cat scene in the last episode really hits that feeling home.
Steven Universe, Adventure Time, and Regular Show are the only animated shows that left me literally sobbing and crying my eyes out. All three of them aired around late 2000's and early 2010's so I literally grew up alongside the characters. They were such a big part of my childhood and my entire life in general that I go back and rewatch them just to feel the comfort again when I was a kid.
Now I'm at college and stressed af lol

I've actually never had a mental breakdown... Anger issues, though? Oh yeah, that I have experienced, though it's gotten better now that I have a certain annoyance out of my life for good.
But man, what a wild ride this show has been. I will miss it, flaws and all.
Ending the show with Steven leaving opens so many doors for new stories for people to imagine.

I feel like they did an amazing job with Steven Universe!!
The ending of SU Future got a lot of backlash, but honestly i think it ended in the best way that the creators could offer! I love SU and it will always be in my heart T^T
Also, the music is TOP 👏 TIER 👏
I feel like alot of the backlash came from people wanting a big epic fight against Corrupted Steven but I wonder if they truly think beating the dog shit out of him would've been helpful for his mental health and also the false claim of everything being solved with a hug is so annoying since the final episode says he has a therapist now.

@@richadoruisuthegod3674 the confrontation was literally solved with a hug. Mind you, it's a hug from the *people that caused his trauma to begin with*. It's asinine. Maybe if it were just connie or the other townspeople that he spent his childhood with I feel it would have made a bit more sense. From experience, when I'm in a state of panic from my PTSD, I don't want the person that caused my trauma or triggered me, to be anywhere near me. A hug from that person is going to make me end up in jail because they wouldn't make it out without getting seriously hurt.

I binged them over the last week and it turns out that the final episode is conveniently right after I watched all the other ones! Steven Universe is an incredible show and I’m so happy you enjoyed it!

i've loved steven universe for so long, though i only watched the first 2 or 3 series with my friend. we live far away so i don't get to see her often at all, she made me so happy and everything seemed fine back then. watching this show with her was one of the most memorable things we did. we sat with a huge bowl of oranges and maybe a few other snacks each time and ate the whole lot. we've grown apart a lot since then.
i recently got the rest of the show and finished it today, along side krystal. it really reminds me of the fun i had with her.
steven universe has meant so much to me and it means so much more right now, all of the messages about real life and how everything is difficult but will work itself out. i feel like i've grown so much in such a short time. this show has been my therapy.
i didn't want steven to turn out the way he did, but i'm really glad he did. not in a rude way, but that i learnt from it.

I think part of the message during his rant was he doesn’t like that these major mistakes are so easily fixed and basically cause him no consequences. Like with jasper, he basically committed an accidental murder and faced no consequences for something he feels guilty about because of how easily he fixed something so serious

YEP... YEP!!! Steven Universe will always be special to me, I loved that show so dearly. Waited through every hiatus, watched so many theory videos predicting what will happen, got excited for every steven bomb, I really felt like I grew with Steven in a way. It was so devastating to watch him go, so bittersweet..!! I loved getting to experience it again through you, if that makes sense haha, like watching it for the first time all over again - and yes I did cry my eyes out AGAIN rewatching these final episodes despite knowing what was coming, lol. I'd be surprised if you didn't, it's so aaaaaaaaa...!!! 😭
I very much look forward to the next series you do, and will definitely be tuning in :)

Wow , can you believe it's really the end . It was such an amazing journey and I'm still so excited for he next series . I would love for you to watch an anime that would be amazing.
I don't get why people don't like this season, I loved it so much it's bringing up so many conversations and thoughts that are so important, I was stuck in a "helpful Steven" mode, always thinking about anything except myself, and it took that episode for me to realize how harmful It was, and it started my spiral but i couldn't be more thankful for that, because I finally found myself 💜 to say that this was a bad ending... are you mad? I mean not only is just good period but the fact that the SU team had everything against them, no help, getting time cut, things changed and cancelled and still they made the best show ever 👏👏 I love SU so much 💜

I'll miss watching these! You said you were gonna react to other animated shows, so to suggest one not many have done: Onyx Equinox is an adult-action series set in Mesoamerica (Aztec, Maya, etc) and has some amazing art design, music, and background art, and speaking as somebody who does writeups and helps history and archeology channels on the subject, it is fantastically well researched and authentic: Not only is it literally accurate in most respects (with the specific clothing and architecture of each culture, which includes other indigenous groups too), but even the arcs and themes that the characters go through, and the original fictional designs ties into actual symbolism from Mesoamerican poetry and iconography. I'd be happy to help explain influences and stuff too!

I love how the diamonds went from demanding stuff from people to “I suggest you go to” like giving them the option to do what they want. It’s such a huge development.
little funfact about stevens line about "visiting all **39** states"
there are several instances in the show, where you can see/hear in the dialogue that some countries/places seem to be missing from the SU-World. Like when Greg mentiones "Florida **Island**" in an earlier episode.
The reason for that is, that those places where best known for censoring certain aspects of the show (like giving Ruby a male voice and refering to her with masc pronouns to make her relationship with sapphire appear straight) or not even airing the show because of these themes to begin with. When it comes to the US-States I believe they chose all states that hadn't legalised same-sex marriage at the time of airing or smth along those lines.
so the show writer decided to pull a reverse-UNO and deleted those places within universe too.
Honestly one of my favorite gags of the show. "They gonna censor us? We can do that too"
nah they just went with an alt-Earth to show the affect that gem colonization had on the planet. Steven lives in what would be Delaware but is referred to as Delmarva, Pennsylvania is called Keystone, etc etc -- it's not related to the censorship stuff like most folks think, that was just a fan theory that came around when the fake screenshots of Ruby with a mustache started circulating. it's just a creative choice they made for worldbuilding purposes

Also one of my favorite moments is Lion just blinking as much as he can (from earlier Steven tried to tell him that 'blinking means I love you' so him just blinking nonstop was extra melty. This was a wonderful journey to have gotten to joined you on, and thank you for getting into this. While I know Future wasn't some people's cup of tea, but it hit in places and I definitely appreciate that they went there on some of those topics.
