I was fully planning on saying goodbye today. I had music on while I was laying down, trying to get the courage to just do it. This song came on, it made me overwhelmingly sad, but not the type of sadness I had been feeling. It made me sad that I would even think of leaving this earth. Something world shattering had to of happened to this guy to put his brain on the path to creating what he does. You don't have a perfect and happy life and be able to imagine what he does. As a lifelong musician, I can tell you, the tougher your life is, the better the art is that will come out of you. It's unfortunate but true. The hardest part is that so many of us will not survive the suffering long enough to give the world the gifts we have inside. Artists experience life more intensely, more vividly, it makes it a thousand times harder to get through the tough times that are part of any life.
@@jeffffro7674 I don't think artists necessarily experience life more intensely or vividly than anyone else, rather they have another avenue to express life visually or by sound. We all express, but have varying degrees of perceived talent in doing so. Bon Iver seems to have a willingness to be vulnerable and sensitive in his music, without being harsh or intrusive. In some ways it strikes me as a form of ambient music along the lines of Brian Eno, with similar depth of meaning in the lyrics. His falsetto adds to the allure. Nick Drake also comes to mind.
I feel like i hear the echo of a mothers cries listening to this song so and I've described as such before so its strangely beautiful to know that memory is carried by someone.

To the person who read this, It’s been hard for you, I know, and it makes me sad that you don’t see yourself in the way I see you. Sometimes they are things in life that cause us to loose ourselves, and the way you have is so unimaginable painful. I miss your smile, the way your eyes light up the whole room just by the sound of your laughter. I miss the way you accepted the way you look in the mirror without cursing yourself out about how ugly you look. I miss the way you didn’t think of yourself as a failure because everyone makes mistakes, we all have flaws and we all aren’t perfect. It’s painful to see that no one around you seems to see the pain trough your eyes, but, stranger, I do, I see how heavy your heart is and how comforting the sadness for you might be, how afraid your heart is of happiness because it disappears in the end, right? You don’t know how much impact you have in this world and it’s sad to see that your demons fight against you and want to take over you. Because you do make change, it’s something so simple and little that brightens up someone’s whole world, it can be a small smile from your lips, the way you look at things you’re passionate about, the way you make yourself eat even though it’s been hard for you lately, the way you zoom out and go in your own world, you brighten up my world by reading this, it means a lot to me that you’re here, existing, but I don’t want you to just exist, you deserve to feel alive. i can't express the feeling of the beautiful sadness i feel when i hear songs that remind me of water. i had a friend who drowned in the ocean almost two years ago, and i couldn't stop listening to this song. when he died, i started sitting a lot on this particular bench that had a view to the ocean. i would just put this song on repeat and stare at the water. i'm very angry at the water but it just keeps flowing around all innocent. florence welchs' songs make me feel the same way. im so pissed.
It takes a long time but I absolutely promise you that as time passes you will become stronger and things will get easier. Getting close to 20 years since I lost a friend in a car accident. I still struggle with it some days but just keep trying to move forward mate.
I feel that this song was meant for those who are troubled or need a rock to hold them down. She just was so childish about things when I left everything and everybody to be with her... Ended with a canceled engagement. All I got is the dog... We got her together when she was 3 months .. she just turned a year on the 28th of April. She's a brindle American Staffordshire terrier... All I got... She was there when I lost everything and nights we starved together. Nowadays we good she eats better than me sometimes lol... But you said in a place you've only visited in your dream... I would turn all that to reality with a love you could never imagine. I love the way you articulated that. Stood out to me, you seem amazing💙

Just got out of a 2 year relationship bc we had went from talking all the time and being happy together to fighting over the smallest things literally all the time... most of the time it was my fault but he never once blamed me but I couldn't take it anymore. He's military and acts like he has absolutely no time to ever talk to me but I'd talk to him and he'd just be playing a game..

08/27/2023 I’m one of those rare people on planet earth who consume music most of the day for sometimes 8-13 hours daily I just listen to stuff old stuff new stuff. I heard this today while watching Gran Turismo in IMAX. I was immediately moved to tears. The scene helped too but this song is hella somber and special. I can appreciate good music. Especially when you FEEL what they put into it .

The worst thing about music!!!!!! Jimi Hendricks wrote Manic Depression because he was terribly upset that he couldn't physically touch and experience music in a way that we as humans need to be complete. It is a big part of why we lost him so early. Our own thoughts can be the most devastating thing there is. That's why music is so important to me, the best distraction from anything and everything.

I'm studying for my final subject to obtain my Mechanical engineering degree right now, can't help to think how far I have come. I always had self-doubt and prone to lots of anxiety attacks. I would have never believed that I'd get this far, but thanks to Justin's music the journey had been eased up during these late nights I spend studying. This particular song feels like a warm blanket, shielding my bad thoughts and allowing me to focus. To everyone doing exactly the same as me, please hang on. I know how bad it feels resisting the urge to rest and sleep, I know how it feels to dedicate all the brain energy into Math or other tedious subjects. My dog of 16 years died In My arms last week. It was unexpected and I miss him so much I feel like I could die from heartbreak at any moment. I remember he’s gone and I get so sick I could throw up. I’m only 22 and he’s been with me since I was like 6. I’ve never had to really live without him and I forgot how miserable life could be without him. This song was the perfect representation of my desire to just hold him again. I would do anything in the whole world to kiss his sweet face and hold him again.

This song reminds me of the first time I ever heard Justin Vernon. I was a student at UW-Eau Claire and I was walking over a bridge on campus. It was really common for people to write messages on the rocks below (for the folks walking over the bridge). There was a message on banks of the Chippewa River below that said "Mount Vernon" and some description of where they were playing. I went to the concert with my girlfriend at the time and connected with the music immediately. That connection has grown deeper as his music evolves. I am almost 40 now. That girl is my wife. I haven't been back to Eau Claire in over a decade. I don't know if that makes me sad, nostalgic, or happy. But like all of his songs, it definitely makes me feel something.

I played this the night my daughter was born and play this on repeat the night before my daughters birthday each year as I stay up super late setting up birthday balloons, decorations and set up gifts. It is such a bittersweet feeling watching your baby grow as you grow with her❤ time is truly a thief. “Climb is all we know” and each parent can relate to that. We climb and climb but don’t realize just how much time slips between our fingers until we take a double glance at our newborn and they are now 3 talking back to you. Enjoy each day and don’t take anything for granted.
its so refreshing to hear violins, over auto tune. Ivers voice is especially haunting with the accompaniment of the slide guitar. I have heard at least 4 different versions of this and each has its own unique inflection, thus making it even more open and vast, half of the beauty of this song is its emptiness.
Before I even saw this music video, I heavily associated this song with Nostalgic feelings of mine. Bon Iver has played throughout the years of my childhood, and I always associate the songs with bittersweet memories, and the need to go home, wherever it is. This song in particular heavily reminds me of Guaymas/San Carlos, in the Sonoran region of Mexico, on the coast. I long to go there, and I haven't been there in ten years. The fact that this music video takes place on a beach just moved me deeply. IDK lol, I'm rambling, but this music does that to me, and I'm grateful about that.
Bon Iver is one of my favorite musicianS and I haven't heard one song I didn't like. But this particular song makes me sit and think about what I have, what I need and what I want. Then I always come to the realization that all I need is my family and my best friend and that I need to be happy with what I got. Im considered lower class and IM PROUD OF IT!:)

I'm almost 45. Started playing instruments at 3. Viola. Followed by around 35 or so more. Anytime in my life when I was so down I was absolutely sure there was no coming back, the only thing that could reverse that was music. Not just music as much as it is the 'right' music for that specific moment. Sometimes it takes days or weeks to find it too. I didn't even hear this man and his gifts until I was 30 years into the amazing effects of music!! It doesn't matter though cause I did eventually hear it. I'm incredibly sad for the people on earth who haven't been exposed to this stuff. It's radically different from the majority of what's out there, it's possibly some of the most emotionally jam packed music I've ever felt. When horrible things happen and it's the only thing media will address, instead of thinking, how can anyone be so terrible to another person???? I think of the beautiful souls like Justin. Like Stevie Wonder. Beethoven, Lennon, Victor Wooten, Gabriel Faure, Marvin Gaye, Smokey, Aretha, PRINCE!!!! The music world has connected us to so many just plain pure and love filled people, even if there's just a few of them, and the rest of humanity is horrible, the strength and the goodness, the caring nature of these few, it's way more than there will ever be in any form of negativity in the universe. Darkness can easily seem overwhelming at times, but the light of a single match or candle flame can be witnessed by millions breaking through the dark. Love is everything to and for everyone.
I remember when I was driving at night from Burlington - Vermont to Lake Placid - New York on a road in the mountains and in the middle of the forest, it was very dark and it was snowing and I was alone, Listening to this song I fell into tears, I never felt so I live like that night. Every time I listen to this song I am transported to that night, and to the time when I lived in the Adirondacks.
Justin Vernon played at my friend's grad party at the House of Rock in Eau Claire, WI in 2004 before he was part of Bon Iver. I heard him then and he was incredible and now that I see he filmed this video in Byron Bay, Australia (my favorite place in the whole world), makes me dig him that much more. If you guys haven't checked out his old band Deyarmond Edison, try to find it. I personally like it even more than Bon Iver.

Something world shattering had to of happened to this guy to put his brain on the path to creating what he does. You don't have a perfect and happy life and be able to imagine what he does. As a lifelong musician, I can tell you, the tougher your life is, the better the art is that will come out of you. It's unfortunate but true. The hardest part is that so many of us will not survive the suffering long enough to give the world the gifts we have inside. Artists experience life more intensely, more vividly, it makes it a thousand times harder to get through the tough times that are part of any life.

@@jeffffro7674 I don't think artists necessarily experience life more intensely or vividly than anyone else, rather they have another avenue to express life visually or by sound. We all express, but have varying degrees of perceived talent in doing so. Bon Iver seems to have a willingness to be vulnerable and sensitive in his music, without being harsh or intrusive. In some ways it strikes me as a form of ambient music along the lines of Brian Eno, with similar depth of meaning in the lyrics. His falsetto adds to the allure. Nick Drake also comes to mind.

She just was so childish about things when I left everything and everybody to be with her... Ended with a canceled engagement. All I got is the dog... We got her together when she was 3 months .. she just turned a year on the 28th of April. She's a brindle American Staffordshire terrier... All I got... She was there when I lost everything and nights we starved together. Nowadays we good she eats better than me sometimes lol... But you said in a place you've only visited in your dream... I just listen to stuff old stuff new stuff. I heard this today while watching Gran Turismo in IMAX. I was immediately moved to tears. The scene helped too but this song is hella somber and special. I can appreciate good music. Especially when you FEEL what they put into it .

Jimi Hendricks wrote Manic Depression because he was terribly upset that he couldn't physically touch and experience music in a way that we as humans need to be complete. This song reminds me of the first time I ever heard Justin Vernon. I was a student at UW-Eau Claire and I was walking over a bridge on campus. It was really common for people to write messages on the rocks below (for the folks walking over the bridge). There was a message on banks of the Chippewa River below that said "Mount Vernon" and some description of where they were playing. I went to the concert with my girlfriend at the time and connected with the music immediately. That connection has grown deeper as his music evolves. I am almost 40 now. That girl is my wife. I haven't been back to Eau Claire in over a decade. I don't know if that makes me sad, nostalgic, or happy. But like all of his songs, it definitely makes me feel something.

I played this the night my daughter was born and play this on repeat the night before my daughters birthday each year as I stay up super late setting up birthday balloons, decorations and set up gifts. It is such a bittersweet feeling watching your baby grow as you grow with her❤ time is truly a thief. “Climb is all we know” and each parent can relate to that. We climb and climb but don’t realize just how much time slips between our fingers until we take a double glance at our newborn and they are now 3 talking back to you. Enjoy each day and don’t take anything for granted.

its so refreshing to hear violins, over auto tune. Ivers voice is especially haunting with the accompaniment of the slide guitar. Before I even saw this music video, I heavily associated this song with Nostalgic feelings of mine. Bon Iver has played throughout the years of my childhood, and I always associate the songs with bittersweet memories, and the need to go home, wherever it is. This song in particular heavily reminds me of Guaymas/San Carlos, in the Sonoran region of Mexico, on the coast. I long to go there, and I haven't been there in ten years. The fact that this music video takes place on a beach just moved me deeply. IDK lol, I'm rambling, but this music does that to me, and I'm grateful about that.

Bon Iver is one of my favorite musicianS and I haven't heard one song I didn't like. But this particular song makes me sit and think about what I have, what I need and what I want. Then I always come to the realization that all I need is my family and my best friend and that I need to be happy with what I got. Im considered lower class and IM PROUD OF IT!:)

Gran Turismo is the best car movie of this year
I had just listened to the song for the first time, and I think it saved me. Before I listened to it, I was contemplating taking my own life. the song brought me a sense of sadness, but not in a bad way, it made me feel like everything was going to be okay. The song does bring tears to my eyes, but it also brings a sense of peace. I don't think it's my time yet. no matter how numb I feel to everything, this song puts me in my feels. I have been sober from sh for a week, I know its not a lot, but I know its a start. Just gotta keep telling myself that todays not my time. I am thankful for looking this song up and giving it a try. thank you Bon Iver

I'm almost 45. Started playing instruments at 3. Viola. Followed by around 35 or so more. Anytime in my life when I was so down I was absolutely sure there was no coming back, the only thing that could reverse that was music. Not just music as much as it is the 'right' music for that specific moment. Sometimes it takes days or weeks to find it too. I didn't even hear this man and his gifts until I was 30 years into the amazing effects of music!! It doesn't matter though cause I did eventually hear it. I'm incredibly sad for the people on earth who haven't been exposed to this stuff. It's radically different from the majority of what's out there, it's possibly some of the most emotionally jam packed music I've ever felt. When horrible things happen and it's the only thing media will address, instead of thinking, how can anyone be so terrible to another person???? I think of the beautiful souls like Justin. Like Stevie Wonder. Beethoven, Lennon, Victor Wooten, Gabriel Faure, Marvin Gaye, Smokey, Aretha, PRINCE!!!! The music world has connected us to so many just plain pure and love filled people, even if there's just a few of them, and the rest of humanity is horrible, the strength and the goodness, the caring nature of these few, it's way more than there will ever be in any form of negativity in the universe. Darkness can easily seem overwhelming at times, but the light of a single match or candle flame can be witnessed by millions breaking through the dark. Love is everything to and for everyone.

I remember when I was driving at night from Burlington - Vermont to Lake Placid - New York on a road in the mountains and in the middle of the forest, it was very dark and it was snowing and I was alone, Listening to this song I fell into tears, I never felt so I live like that night. Every time I listen to this song I am transported to that night, and to the time when I lived in the Adirondacks.

Justin Vernon played at my friend's grad party at the House of Rock in Eau Claire, WI in 2004 before he was part of Bon Iver. I heard him then and he was incredible and now that I see he filmed this video in Byron Bay, Australia (my favorite place in the whole world), makes me dig him that much more. If you guys haven't checked out his old band Deyarmond Edison, try to find it. I personally like it even more than Bon Iver.
