Jesus this song is just so beautiful, and it’s something we need to all realise. We can’t all be main characters, but you are your own main character and you are to someone else as they are to you. We all have our own little corner of this Holocene, we are all unique and special. It’s easy to feel insignificant as Vernon did, but when he took in the beauty of those surroundings, he came to realise he was lucky to just witness it all with his brother beside him, and how rare it is really just to exist, and that shouldn’t be taken for granted by seeing yourself as insignificant.

It's so hard today to find music that actually draws a balance between realism and romanticism, so that it's interesting enough to keep us listening but not dramatic enough that we get sick of it. Bon Iver, in my opinion, does this. You mightn't feel the same way but there's no need to feel superior about it. Music either connects with you or it doesn't.

We made the decision to get married and leave Colorado and go to Alaska to pursue a totally different lifestyle. It's so hard today to find music that actually draws a balance between realism and romanticism, so that it's interesting enough to keep us listening but not dramatic enough that we get sick of it. Bon Iver, in my opinion, does this. You mightn't feel the same way but there's no need to feel superior about it. Music either connects with you or it doesn't.

I've finally found this song. 7 years ago the last movie I've watched with my dad was Robert Downey Jr's The Judge and this song was on the end of the movie. That movie has a special place in my heart because in the movie RDJ's dad died there as well, but on a boat when they where fishing on a lake. I discovered this song the night before I had to put my dog down. He had cancer, and we couldn’t let him suffer any longer. He lived a long and beautiful life. After this song was over, and I was done crying, I went downstairs and sat next to the makeshift cozy hospital bed we had for him. I told him how much I loved him, and reminded him about some of the thousands of fun times we had together. He sat there and listened, and at the end of my story, I couldn’t help but cry again. He licked my hand over and over which I think was his way of saying “it’s going to be ok”. The next day my closest friend who I knew for 13 years was gone. A friend who didn’t ask for much, who didn’t argue, who didn’t hate, who was there for me during my darkest times and asked for nothing in return except a treat here and there. I think about him every day. Instead of being sad, I smile because I think about all those amazing times we shared.

That's not rambling. I didn't know this song when I had to say good-bye to my best friend, also named Otis, a special needs dachshund with GME. Three years ago I climbed a mountain ( the convict trail ) next to the Hawkesbury River at Wisemans Ferry ( The Forgotten Valley ) and looked out, and Holocene popped in my mind "I can see for miles n miles n miles" . I had listened to Bon Iver half a dozen times. went home and listen again. Amazing artwork. I now look at life a little different. Music, nature, words, mortality and my own insignificance and the reverse. Made me more comfortable being myself while trying to be the best I can be on in as many aspects.
