With a Bon Iver song, it's like hearing your favorite song from one of your past lives for the first time in this life. The memory is hazy and faraway, but you feel the remembrance deep within you

My brother Jesse died today. I can't stop playing this song.
I can hardly think..I can't believe you are gone because I feel you right now. Everyone is leaving me alone in my room here. Talking in hushed tones, I hear them though. The sun is just pouring in through the windows. I am so overwhelmed with sorrow. I cannot stop playing this song.
    RIP my only brother..

Crash: I am so sorry for your loss. I have a younger brother whom I see only so often. Even though we rarely see each other, I’d be devastated if I were to lose him since he shares the memories we have of our family and our childhood. Your brother was young.... please keep him in your heart always. Take care of yourself, too.

He often writes lyrics as an after thought to the music simply placing the right word for the rhyme or sound instead of having an exact meaning in mind. At least for some pieces. I know that in Skinny Love some of the words were just what sounded right. To me all music is about how it makes you feel. I often feel music is the soundtrack to my life or some fictional movie I’m creating in my head neither feels less genuine or less emotional.

This song definitely hits differently when you've lost your mother. Miss you Mom, wish I could call you and tell you how good I was doing. Was a bit of a rough patch after you passed for a couple years. But this year finally decided to commit to making a change. Sorry for being so self destructive when I was younger. Sorry for all the pain. Feel like I changed you in a lot of ways for the good too even through all the bullshit I put you through. Miss our talks, felt like our bond reached a different level where I was never afraid to tell you anything and felt nothing but empathy from you of course after the disappointment sometimes. I guess that's the moment in life where you really feel like you've grown up in a lot of ways. Not so pessimistic or nihilistic as I used to be, try to be humbly grateful for the good days that I do have and I'm thankful to you for that and so much more. I love you Mom, hope you can see this smile on my face.

Beautiful worlds. Sorry for your loss. I lost my mother shockinlgy quick to leucemia. I was 23. Can't wait to finally reconnect some day. But it's happening, we're being prepared. Very complicated yet pristine times we're living in. We've got to go within ourselves. The experience of losing my mother made me question everything in life... I had suicide attempts...And I was guided to study anything on purpose of life. It's been 10 years and I've never stopped missing her, my best friend, my mother and my partner in crime. I feel so honoured that such deep connection was offered to me in this life. And yes, the song is much deeper if you know how the loss of a dear one feels. Kudos for your words, Josh. RIP to all the mothers who came to this earth with a gift of the unconditional love. I now have the first hand experience, as I became myself a mother. What a gift... Bless all mothers for choosing their lives here on earth, and for choosing love.

a nostalgic reflection of the innocence of childhood (imagery of the video)
and the realization that we all grow out of it, setting sights on other things (money, dope, want it all mine)
"you wanted it your whole life... back and forth with light"
And mothers connect us to that innocence within us, because they always see us that way.

Arthur has done the Artist and song proud, his raspy voice, softening and changing vocal rendition. Kept it pure soul, heart throbbing, emotional and as usual taking to nostalgic times.

I found this song during my 10-day leave from Marine Corps boot camp. For some reason I never comprehended what it meant when a mother feels to see her child go. When I left for San Diego, I thought it was going to be a smooth 3 months. It wasn't. Really, it was worse for my mother. I got closer to all of my family when I came back. Then I found this song the night before I left. Frankly I teared up a little bit because the song is nostalgic, and I knew while remembering old times with them and my beloved dog that I wasn't going to be there for a while. My grandmother had strayed from our family over some family tension, but she called me that night, apologizing for not always being there. She told me she was getting older and she said she didn't know if she was going to see me again. She said her goodbye to me, but it was really something of a farewell. To hear those words from someone I'd known for so long was...excruciating. I'd never known what it meant to lose someone forever. But there I was, abruptly seeing that become a reality. I tried not to show it but my throat just tightened up as I returned my farewell. My dog was also getting older, and I knew that he could go when the time came. I couldn't be there for him if he went. He'd been with me since I was in 5th grade (I'm 20 now). So I sat there that night, petting him to sleep and he was so peaceful. I always knew it would come one day, but it was just so sudden. I never thought I could lose someone so fast. I pet him for a really long time. The next morning, that pain didn't go away; we all got up at 4:00 because I had to go early. My mother couldn't come with to the airport so again I found myself giving a goodbye. That moment when she gave her blessing as my grandmother did...this time I didn't just hear it. I saw the pain in her eyes, and I noticed that her face had been weathered slightly by age. A tad bit of wrinkles here, some unnoticeable strands of white hair amongst a field of brown wavy hair, still glowing like the sunrise that morning. There went my throat again, and it all just hit me like a damn sledgehammer. I hugged her before getting into the car my sister had bought recently. I really couldn't speak on the flight back, my mind just played those moments over and over. I haven't seen them since and it's only been 2 months, but I still get hurt every once and a while. This song is a rose. It's beautiful, vibrant and (of course) it has thorns. Really, I can appreciate everything in life a little more because people like Bon Iver are there to compose what can hardly be put into words. Music is the language that translates raw emotion (that's why I love it so much)!. Huge thanks to Bon Iver and my mom and grandmother. Actually thank all of you who took the time to read this, you guys are all great people.

Bon iver's music is a respite from the insane rush of this generation. It celebrates loneliness and self-fulfilment in a truly remarkable manner with their extravagant minimalism. I have been a lover of their music for almost 9 years now and no matter how good or bad my life becomes, bon iver keeps me rooted to the reality... The thing that will ultimately matter is the love I receive and give... And the person I can always count on is me.

I've been trying to explain to myself in a rational way what happens to me when I hear a piece of Bon Iver. I fail at all the time. The musicality and lyricism that I find in these pieces of art I find nowhere else. When I listen to Justin's songs and his parallel works I feel connected with forces much greater than me. I feel fragile, strong and exposed. And at the same time. How happy I am to know this work that has brought me so much joy since my adolescence. I find myself in the lines of each composition. This is beautiful. That is expression. This is meaningful production of art. Man, you rock. Thank you.

I feel like this song is about a kid growing up and being hardened by the world, forgetting what it means to be a kid. As a child, he was full of creativity, childish spirit, and happy energy, as we see in the video and the first verse. However, as we all do, he grew up and was consumed by work and the material world, forgetting what really matters: family, being happy, and being at peace. "Full time you talk your money up, well it's livin in a coalmine." The coalmine is the dismal state of his soul and his family life. He works full time and is consumed by it, detached from his home life and relationships, completely forgetting his childish spirit and love of life.
It's "Tall time [he] called his ma." She will remind him of what is really important and keep him grounded.
And as always when he calls her, he complains about how strenuous his work is and how miserable he secretly is. "Tall vote you know you mope it up,"
    But she reminds him sadly,
"Well you wanted it your whole life."
He was in a rush to grow up, and now he realizes too late that he can never go back.
    Pretty amazing song.

Great interpretation, I left a similar one in a comment. I like what you said about how he will complain to his mom, and his mom will remind him that he (thought he) wanted this whole life.
I am still wondering "Tell the story or he goes" at the beginning implies, sounds like it's important to setting up the scene.

"Full time you talk your money up while its living in a coal mine
Tall.time to call your ma hey ma hey ma"
I interpreted it as he keeps telling himself that everythings fine when its not (coal mine)
That reminds him to call his ma to console in her and to vent

    • @romeoarchibald9949

Sid Gore maybe “tell the story or he goes” is his need for his mother to keep his spirits up with stories from childhood, to remind him who he is. Tell the story (Story being innocence, youth and purity) or he goes (That image of his younger self will fade and he will disconnect from the family and home he once loved). Hella interesting hearing you guys talk about these lyrics tho, y’all stay up!

"Full time you talk your money up, while it's living in a coal mine" - is that saying that when growing up his family maybe always provided what he/his siblings wanted in terms of possessions and holidays, but they didn't actually get to see their father much coz he was working the whole time to provide for them? - that's what I hear, and it's such genius to convey so much in such few words.
