My Fountain Pen Collection - 2024

  • In this video I share the current state of my fountain pen collection! The last time I did this was about 4 years ago with a 4-part video series. I managed to cover everything except 2 cigar boxes full of pens that need work and/or need to be quarantined for consideration of re-homing.
I showed inside my 10 zippered fountain pen cases, 16 pocket pens in my Leather Rose cigar box, and pens that I have stored in 3 Opus 88 pen boxes (with magnetic closures).
    The pen cases shown are:
    Kaco 20 pen cases (2)
Galen Leather Crazy Horse 20 pen case (1)
Galen Leather Crazy Horse 10 pen cases (2)
    Kaco 10 pen case (1)
    Ashton 10 pen case tan
Hub Pen Company 24 pen cases (2)
    Monteverde 36 pen case (1)
TOTAL CAPACITY of my zipped pen case: 184
Quick Count Grand Total of all pens still here: 292
Pens considered keepers for sure: 211
2 cigar boxes with pens I'm working on what to do with and/or planning repairs etc: 66
SPECIAL NOTE: Thank you so much to all pen friends, viewers and anonymous contributors over the past 7+ years! In the pen cases there were a total of 80 pens gifted to me over the years!
ALSO: I found another fountain pen a few minutes after I finished my video which is such a lovely pen and it didn't make the video - it was sent to me by a pen friend and I had it in a pen cup for filling and overlooked it: it is the Pilot 78g EF black. Goodness. I wonder how many more missed roll call.
ANOTHER NOTE: I only covered fountain pens not dip pens with the exception of my relatively new River City Pen Company nib holder that I got for my brass Kakimori nib.
Thank you so much for watching! I hope you're enjoying your collection and feeling only the feelings you want to in regard to how many or few or how high or low end ... etc etc. I firmly believe that we can choose how to feel about our collecting ... and that although sometimes we'll have human nature type reactions to things other say or to our comparisons of our hobby and theirs ... we ultimately get to respond and hold onto only our own beliefs and feelings about our collecting regardless of how big or small! There may always be a small part of me that has minimalist wish or fantasy lol but when it comes to books and pens I am not minimal. So, I'm just going to be me . LOL

Chris, thank you so much for sharing your collection. I also love what you said at the beginning, that only you can make yourself feel any which way about your own collection. No one else can make you feel any other way. Thank you so much!

Hi Karyna - I always have to remind myself of this all the time. :) Sometimes, oddly, I'll get jealous of people with much smaller pen collections but all beautiful, superior pens lol ... then I have to remember I can have a $300 pen for the price of 9 of my medium priced pens. My brother used to say we people forget how easy it is to nickel and dime ourselves out of the nicer things we could buy if we waited. :) Also, I'm a want-to-be minimalist but it never gets too far in some categories!!!!

I don’t sell my pens, either. I love to give them away. That’s part of the fun for me! Also, I agree with your sentiments on collecting. Everyone should be happy with their own collections and not worry about anyone else’s, because other people’s personal preferences or practices aren’t a reflection on anyone else’s.

Hi Terri - at first I thought I was actually going to fit my private collection in a 20-pen case (I know ridiculous now that I think about it). Next, I believed a 40 pen case would do the trick. LOL Ultimately, the best way for me to organize was with smaller cases so I can really see what I have in each brand/type. This has worked best for me even better than the Monteverde cases which were my go to for several years!!!!

Congrats, what a momentous effort to complete it. Amazing how time can be past as each pen acquisition adds to your stash. Still, Aaron Bartholmey has the largest pencil collection at 69,225, as of 2023, so none of us comes close to that many fountain pens.

I'm just at the point where you talk about the sub collections feeling complete and it makes a lot of sense. I feel that about my Lamy Safari/AlStars, I have four and if I felt like I needed another one then it would have to trump out one of the four. But some other aspects of the collection don't feel as complete as this.

Hi!!! When I have been a want-to-be minimalist for a long time now ... finally realizing it's highly unlikely I'll ever be minimal in my pens or books. These type of wide angle exercises of inventorying and talking about all my pens or choosing top favorites ... they really make me think. I wonder what 10 pens would be my choice if I had to narrow it down that far ... I always enjoy your videos and thoughts about collecting! The closest I've come to choosing seriously only a few is when we pack for hurricane preparedness in case of evacuation + when I go on vacation (rarely). LOL

That was fun! Thanks for putting this video together. I like my Kakimori nib best as a swatching pen. If you use it on its side, almost, it makes a wonderful broad swatch that is fairly easy to control and nice and wet. I realze that's a limited use, but it's great for playing with inks. I don't really write with it, other than writing ink names. Your collection is looking good!

Vintage to modern, cheap to more expensive, there can be a reason to enjoy most fountain pens.
You know my love for my vintage pens, especially lever filler Esterbrook, but I really can agree with you about earlier 1970s Platinum pocket pens. My "men's" one from around the same time is in constant use, in spite of older Fountain Pen Network statements about how cheap they were made. (Not mine, and other than the tiny flaw in the coating on your cap, which doesn't show on video 😉, not yours. They've held up great, and write great as well. )
Incredible collection, Chris! And nothing that made you take out a second mortgage. 😂 You don't need to spend a fortune to get a nice writer.
Just got an Esterbrook 2550 extra fine posting nib. Have had a couple, generally not impressed with any extra fine nibs, but this, with the Waterman Mysterious Blue I've been filling it with? Writes like a dream. Haven't felt a bit of those things that some don't like about extra fine nibs. And it's technically not tipped! It's a 2xxx, so tip is made by rolling over and welding it, which tends to wear out somewhat quickly. But, in spite of coming from a pen that very obviously saw a LOT of use, and the nib was caked in dry blue-black ink, writes like NOS. Not bad for a pen only I wanted. 😁 1948-52, based on the lever, and still working on the original ink sac (who says that they're only good for about a decade? Easily ⅔ the Esterbrook pens I've ever gotten still were working, even many from the 1930s.)
    Great video! Thanks!

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Hi Paul - I really love all my pens! The one quarantine bag that came from the cigar box I've even rescued one from that this past week. LOL It's cool all the ones that earned a spot in the pen cases! That always tells me a lot. :) My shelf that holds the pen cases is full so that can be a sort of speed bump. :)
I wish I had better overall luck with vintage pens ... with 3 that need repair I get discouraged but then ... I bet I'd have much better luck with older pens that took either cartridge or a converter if there are such pens ... maybe if I stuck to 60s and forward? I'm not sure. :) Have a great spring/summer my friend!

    • @paulherman5822
      @paulherman5822 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

@ChrisSaenz13 Parker 45. Best of both worlds. Cartridge converter system Parker still uses (though the ink selection from Parker is almost nonexistent today. Washable blue and black...), a classic 1960s design that they made until 2008, so there's plenty out there still, and they can be gotten for reasonable prices. Good soak, get a Parker piston converter (they hold more than the earlier squeeze/"aerometric" ones, and much easier to clean), generally ready to write.
Most are steel nibs, and I kinda recommend those at first, but there's a selection of 14K nibs available as well.
(Steel is more likely to find in broad. Generally oblique broad, but...)
The 45 is, in my opinion, a great pen. Used first by JFK and used until Clinton as the Presidential pen (though unfortunately usually in the felt tip version. Not quite a Jotter, but close to the Jotters still made today.)
Not a bad heritage for a pen originally designed for students. 😉

I am very interested in trying to fit one of my many #5 Nemosine nibs into a Moonman pen. I love those nibs deeply deeply and have so few pens that will take them. I actually recently bought 4 Jinhao 82s just for the purpose of using four of those Nemosine #5s.

Hi @wanderpetal -- I find that if I can't pull a nib and feed on a pen I can often just take the nib out with tape and tissue. How did it go - did you get the Nemosine nibs onto the 82s? I have 2 outfitted with those M Nemosine nibs. And one of my 82s has a B nib ... wait 2 of them have broad nibs now one is a Goulet nib the other is an Opus branded B nib.

HI @disisd -- the funny thing is that most of my nibs in the trays are nibs taken off pens like Jinhaos in #6, #5, Lamy style but stock Wing Sung or Jinhao lol. The other category is TWSBI D580 and Opus 88 nibs which boost my pen versatility but I'd never get rid of them.
