    just wanted to have some fun, assess my fountain pen collection & hypothetically narrow down my collection to 10 pens + a few “knock arounds”; this was very fun, play-play stressful, and I hope you enjoy! I also touch on fountain pen burnout and shame in this one as well. #juliaroyal #juliahere

    I change hobbies like once a year. Before these I was collecting IEMs. I learn so much about buying for hobbies that is, don't waste money buying too many for collection. I usually limit myself to only 10. And my goal is to end up with 10 "useful" item to bring forward even if I stop the hobby. Maybe because I'm an older person. I limit to something that I will be using, i can gift to my wife and son later if im gone and something they can remember me for. I buy specifically with that mindset.

      I love hearing your perspective! So interesting! I sometimes think about where things will fall once I’m gone (child-free) and I literally have no clue. For now, I’m just enjoying what I have. I’m with you though- going all in with new hobbies has bit me in the booty a few times. Since there are so many aspects of using fountain pens that match up with other mainstay areas in my life, I do feel a bit more confident with this (but I still need to chill out at the same time 😝) - thanks so much for sharing your thoughts; super valuable.

    I do keep a lot of multiples of certain pens. Some of them are just different colors and patterns of the same pen, and some of them are doubles with the exact same color. I think part of my thought process is that with some pen models, I know that I like them and I really enjoy them, so it's fun to have different colors. For some of them, I just really like the pen in that color so I have more than one of them. Usually I have the exact pairs inked with different inks though

    Really enjoyed this video. I have the same OCD when it comes to putting my pens in different groups and in storage cases.
    I did gift about 20 or so pens to family members... Pelikan m600 red barrel, m200 in the Smoky quartz variant, parker international in the jade finish, all of my twsbis, etc, etc.
    I love your wood 10 slot tray by the way. I have put my pens into top tier, mid tier and lower tier categories but try to minimize inked fountain pens to 5.
    It was fun to see your torment and I will look forward to seeing it again when you do your ONLY 10 must have inks. Good luck.

    I got into the makeup sphere of youtube back when it was popular to amass a collection so huge, you needed to have a room dedicated to makeup storage. Now, the channels I follow prioritize owning a collection they can reasonably use and appreciate. I just got into fountain pens in January of this year and realized something: the community has just experienced a similar collection phase and is on its way to the appreciation phase. While I wouldn’t admonish anyone for being happy with a huge collection, I also believe that having a huge collection is not a requirement for satisfaction in this hobby.

    • @julia-here
      @julia-here  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Absolutely! I think the hobby looks different for everyone as far as acquisition goes; it’s so interesting to hear about people’s experiences and how thoughtful they are (or aren’t) about it all. The whole thing really is cyclical- acquiring - appreciation - repeat haha. 💕

    One of the other things I would say is that I did cut down my collection to 15-20 pens a really long time ago. My numbers are back up, but I'm happier with what I have. I tried very hard to focus my collection on things that I really enjoy. I think that it's pretty important not to be a completist and only get the pens and editions that speak to you. Some of the pens like the Sailor Pro Gear have tons and tons of variations and special colors made for different stores. I have quite a few of the Sailor Pro Gear slims and a Slim Mini because I really like the pens. It's so easy to get sucked into a rabbit hole hunting for new colors that catch your eye

    • @julia-here
      @julia-here  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh wow! Loved reading about your experience! I’m definitely getting into more “let it speak to you” as I’m realizing there are constant releases and just so many color/material options so not being AS impulsive and reeeeally looking at pen specs/colors has made a difference. 💕

    • @Bunnyisms
      @Bunnyisms 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@julia-here I love asking questions about whether it's something that I would enjoy using, what ink I would fill it with, and what I would use it for. There are some pens that are kind of too precious and I don't think I would take them places or worry about them so much I wouldn't enjoy them. There's others that are close to what I would like but not really quite there yet, and I try to pass on those. I also think about what kinds of nibs I'd like on that pen. If I can see myself using it and feeling happy and fortunate every time I pull it out, that's usually when I get it

    • @julia-here
      @julia-here  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Bunnyisms those are great considerations- I’m going to write those down in my pen/ink journal!

    • @Bunnyisms
      @Bunnyisms 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@julia-here It's really nice being able to reach into your collection of pens every day and feel really lucky every time you pull something out. It's like finding treasure, except it's all yours. I have a few little Rickshaw two pen sleeves, and every day I go into my collection and grab a different selection of pens that I will enjoy that day. It's so fun to pull something out and write with it and go "wow, I love this pen!" I used to have more rigid rules about what I would add to my collection, but I have relaxed them somewhat. I do try to keep things focused, but I will take a few exceptions here and there if there is a good reason why I would enjoy it. The Pelikan Twist Shine Mystic is kind of a good example of this. Somehow the color and the way it looks makes it work well for me. I might not buy another one, but that particular one makes me really happy and I absolutely love the one I have 💗
      My mom also collects pens, and she has a little bit of a different system than I do. She has a list and looks through that list to see what pen she should enjoy next. She does seem to really enjoy what she has as well

    This was an interesting (and anxiety-inducing) exercise. I currently only have 25 pens and some of them were acquired for the collection (Kaküno Family - I’m only missing one) or to experience the different nib options in the line (Pilot Metropolitans, Jinhao 100s, & TWSBI Ecos).
    FWIW, Drew Brown said 10 fountain pens *could* serve all your fountain pen needs - not that you *only* need 10 pens. He has a collection of ~70 pens that he’s not currently planning on paring down (at least per the latest GPC Pencast).

    • @julia-here
      @julia-here  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Same here! Some of my pens have definitely been acquired for the sake of trying out different nibs/brands when trying to figure out what it is I like/don't like, etc. I heard Drew talk about/clarify his 10 pen statement on the latest pencast and was glad to hear it! It was definitely cool to see how I could hit a lot of different things I enjoy in 10 pens (plus some), but they bring me so much joy that I don't think I would ever want to actually edit/sell off THAT many of my pens. Thanks so much for watching and for your feedback!! 💕
