I think we all have our fingers crossed for the promised benefits of meshing. My experience after the 3.24.1 patch has been surprisingly smooth - no major crashes at all, even after many hours of play. It makes me wonder if a lot of the trouble some players are having post-patch is more about poorly optimized systems. If that's the case, meshing won’t make much of a difference, and CIG likely won’t fully optimize the game until closer to 1.0. It’s just how game development goes. That said, things are definitely moving in the right direction. Anyone frustrated with the current state should take a step back and enjoy some other games.

They really need to get 4.0 in EVO like yesterday. They cannot be delaying it even more, especially with the recent disgruntles players have been experiencing. Let us start testing no matter how broken, we just want to test, break stuff and report so we can get the ball rolling.
Regarding server meshing: no one is talking about spawn points and unnatural spawning of players during tests. 1000 players on 6 servers, of which 4 are spawn points = 250 players per server within 15 minutes. No wonder experience was poor. On top of that, most didn't even leave spawn planets increasing congestion. I think it's all good. Most of us just didn't get the memo (about what this test was for).
I don't believe spawning in was the issue. The experience wasn't poor in the idea that there was a bunch of lag in the sense of just trying to walk around had you rubberbanding. I mean yea, a bunch of people trying to join all at once will cause some issues, but remember, the home location became its own server, so the amount of people trying to spawn in those locations were always lower. It was more there was a random set of delay when trying to interact with stuff. Watching your ping you could see it wildly jump around. I could see it go from like 30ms to over 9000ms and then back again within fractions of a second. Normally I'm sitting at 30-40ms on live.
@@MrRoblcopter "I mean yea, a bunch of people trying to join all at once will cause some issues, but remember, the home location became its own server" - with 250 players each plus bugs related to networking. Thats what i meant. Sorry, english is not my primary language:)
I called this as soon as I heard about what they were intending to do with static servers, youll end up with servers that are underutilized in underpopulated areas and servers that are way overstressed in high population areas and theres no real easy way to fix that without highly inconveniencing the players
Probably has partially to do with how many spawn points are normally available for a server. Player counts don't exceed 100 under normal circumstances, guarantee they don't have more than 100 habs flagged for use. Most hab builds have more than 100 habs.
I think we could see 4.0 by the end of the year, in the early stages of PTU, either Evo or maybe Wave 1. Seeing it LIVE in December is optimistic as heck.
Let's not forget, during these meshing tests there was monitoring and more logging than usual in a live build. That combined with a lot of players all hitting the cities at once, will hopefully mean under normal conditions it should perform better. Another issue is the scaling as you stated for a larger system like pyro. We are only looking at static server meshing, so there will be more inefficiencies with underutilized servers within the shard.
If they put the server limit at roughly 300-450, I think it'd be the best step forward. From what I've heard, the server meshing test was absolutely fantastic at 300 people, but started to lose efficacy at 500+, and when it hit 1k, it was almost unplayable.
A major issue arose during the test due to uneven player distribution. With four servers connected, the majority of players spawned at Lorville, resulting in over 400 players on a single server and an ineffective load spread. Furthermore, while server performance had improved with frame rates reaching around 30 FPS, latency (ping) was inconsistent, fluctuating wildly between 300-3000 ms. This introduced a new set of problems.
sadly the payer grouping issue is something that can only really be fixed with hard server boundaries or dynamic meshing as long as there is more players in a shard than a single server could realisticaly handle, there is always a chance for all players in that shard to congregate to one server and break it. the system needs something to either encourage a spread or it needs to be dynamic
they probably need to aim for atleast 100 players per server in a shard so that they wont have to buy a ridiculous amount of new servers to handle their current amount of players so if they want to split up the system to any meaningful degree theyll have to increase the playercount massively per shard
@@kayko6969 Last nights test was a huge success in my opinion, there was a few issues that need addressed the likely bandaid fix is to just add more servers in high traffic areas until they can figure out an algorithm that can spin up servers as needed to accomplish the same thing just better and cheaper in the long run for CIG
