    I've heard so many different versions of this song. I think this live version is my favorite. Every note hit perfectly, with that Garland genius. She was truly one of the greatest live entertainers ever. The hand gestures on emphasis was something she did so eloquently and flawlessly. ❤

    This is the BEST VERSION. The tail of the song rises differently, with a much more dramatic ending, hitting a high (alto) "C", the top of Garland's range from 2:38 to the end - this is the only television recording of this ending. Judy sang this version at the London Palladium, but was not in good voice. Here, in 1964, and in stereo (yes it can be found!) P E R F E C T I O N ! ! !

      She nailed the performance. It’s more of a showcase for her performance and singing skills. I’d rather hear it straighter than with gratuitous modulations. Having said that, as my wife explained to me, it was a very done song at the time, so they had to do something different with it. My favorite is the Dudley Moore version. Instrumental. Uptempo

    Judy Garland WAS one of the original members of the Rat Pack, the Humphrey Bogart early 50s pack and the first. Judy did not have to read music she was gifted at birth and it had to be in her DNA to be such a genius musically! There was no one who ever was her equal!

    Just read the biography of Kay Thompson. According to that work, Ms. Thompson was responsible for the extraordinary arrangement Ms. Garland sings here. Ms. Thompson, Garland friend and mentor, was the vocal coach at MGM and influenced two generations of film music. Her goddaughter is Liza Minelli, and if you listen carefully, you can hear Ms. Thompson's influence in her work.

    Love the way Judy gives us two interpretations here: the slow, soft, reflective one, with just Mort at the piano, modulating up to the jazzy, joyful one, the brass and strings at full pelt. Love the way it soars and swoops, and you never know quite where it's going. Judy hits those big notes with all the force and accuracy of an Exocet missile. Unbelievably good.

    • @gaugeonesteam
      @gaugeonesteam 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Rap is music with no music in it. I mean in terms of harmonic progressions and melodic lines,
      I think it is good to know that some young people are still taking an interest in real music. Music that is interesting and challenging in terms of harmony and melody. I like that song (not rap) by Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke: " Blurred lines " but it only has basic 2 chords in it and quite a simply melody. Famous songs from the American song book have complex and interesting harmonic progressions and interesting melodies. That is the point Destiny is making. I don't think this comment is at all judgemental or or condescending.

I remember her singing this when I was a small child. It has made a lasting impression on me! No joke, she has made her mark on this song. You'll have to trust me on the technical stuff. Just a correction, RobertEllis -- Miss Judy had absolutely no problems counting -- the only reason she needed to be cued in by Torme was because she could not sufficiently hear herself over the blare of the band -- a problem that is VERY common for singers.
    Judy's musical timing was, in fact, exceptional; not only could she count with great precision, she did not even have the need to do so, as she had an innate feel of the music.

    @less01 The song was written by Jule Styne (music) and Betty Comden and Adolph Green (lyrics) for the musical "Bells Are Ringing," in which it was sung by the brilliant comedienne Judy Holliday, who had a fairly limited vocal range. I've never heard that the original arrangement was more difficult to sing -- it couldn't be, because unlike Judy Garland's arrangement, the original didn't modulate up three half-steps. Garland's is the more difficult -- and the definitive. A thrilling rendition.

  • @MuzzyVanH
    @MuzzyVanH 12 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I believe the last modulation in this arrangement is a whole step, ( from key of 'F' right to key of 'G'.).Many performers are minus the chops to handle not only the technical ability, but more importantly, the sum in its' entirety, musically and emotionally from tenderly whispered 1st go 'round, to Garland's clear intonation on lyrics of this soaring, bravura finish.Sure it's 'showing off' a bit, that's why they call it SHOW Business. I favor this tag ending to another she performs on this

    (lastly) then again, i'm not a music teacher, nor do i have an extensive knowledge on anything more than very basic vocal technique so i could be completely mistaken.... lol

  • @TheDaguerreotypist
    @TheDaguerreotypist 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    (continued) because the song starts out in head-voice then switches to chest voice, and is then belted toward the end, and while the dynamics vary greatly, the notes and key signature show very little variation...

  • @xander7ful
    @xander7ful 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @pusspleaser134 Actually, Judy could read music a little because she took piano lessons as a child. She put together the medley with Barbra Streisand herself, so she had to know some basics about music to write that down.

  • @TheDaguerreotypist
    @TheDaguerreotypist 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @less01 i'm not sure exactly what ChipL955 is referring to as modulation because in musical terminology, it's taken to mean two things... one version of modulation is referring to a vocal run, or the fast sequential changing of notes, and another is a dynamic term being very good control over the varying volume of notes, usually being for dramatic effect... what i do know is that song is a prime example of perfect belting technique, and that's what makes this version so difficult to sing...

  • @wrenchmandan

    boxxy is great so is jesus

  • @lovelytrix00
    @lovelytrix00 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @TheDaguerreotypist Ms Garland actually changes key centers 3 times in this arrangement. The first key change comes at the beginning of the repeated chorus. The second comes at the lyrics "I was lost....." and the third occurs right on the words "just in time" after "for love came". The first two are up a half step. The third key change or modulation is especially great because she goes up a whole step instead of a half. It's more difficult. Do have the music score for this exact arrangement?

  • @TheDaguerreotypist
    @TheDaguerreotypist 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @lovelytrix00 okay, a key-change modulation is what it is, but i didn't think there was one of those in here... the only slight differential comes after the tempo picks up a bit, but i didn't think that would qualify as a key change, because all that happened was the notes picked up to a slightly higher (probably a half-step, or less) from the rest of the song... the only thing that changes greatly is the tempo and volume of the notes...

  • @TheDaguerreotypist
    @TheDaguerreotypist 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @less01 that, i don't know... i know that she never learned how to read music and sang everything by ear... and the belting was probably due to her start in vaudeville where belting was pretty much the only way to be heard... so i'm sure she developed the style there... and later on she was talking to ethel merman and barbra streisand on her show about belting in general... but i'm not sure if she knew about the technical aspects of it all, or if she was just singing the way she knew...

  • @less01
    @less01 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ChipL955 ohh very interesting to know but I was refering to the definitive version as the original.. sorry ;) but its interesting how this version is soo powerful and demanding in terms of voice and range and yet the definitive one is considered the hardest and better... could you elaborate on that because I am just a music lover I dont know alot about technique... and what is Modulation?

  • @TheDaguerreotypist
    @TheDaguerreotypist 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @lovelytrix00 i don't have the score, no... but i'm judging by the sound alone, and while the dynamics and style change three times, the notes seem to have very little differentiation... if you listen carefully between the pitches of the first and second verse; they change very little... after the crescendo, it picks up quite a bit in volume, while the pitch deviates only slightly from the rest of the song, and if it's considered a key-change, i would only consider the last verse to be so...

  • @less01
    @less01 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TheDaguerreotypist now that we are on the subject.. I wonder if Judy knew what you are talking about and performed it using technique.. or do you think it was just that her talent and voice were so verstail that she was given the arrangement and she would glide along with it...??

    The audio from this episode is a little garbled in places, I wonder if the original master tape was damaged or if it was just recorded that way to begin with. Either way, this is certainly the best performance she ever did of this song with the augmented arrangement at the end.

    • @marcballantyne5277
      @marcballantyne5277 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree this is far and away Judy's best shot at this. She's truly amazing here. Unbelievably, the video tapes of this series languished unloved in a vault for decades amidst ownership squabbles. It was shockingly negligent of the copyright owners. Eventually, Pioneer Video got the tapes and did an amazing, painstaking restoration job, the fruits of which we see now on TH-cam. Sadly, any audio or video glitches still present are likely to have been inflicted during those long years on neglect.

  • @less01

    Judy and Liza, how rare is that?

  • @TheDaguerreotypist
    @TheDaguerreotypist 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    (continued) i think what is happening here is more of a trick or a sort of aural farce... i've heard other people sing this song (not the exact arrangement, but very similar) and when they aren't belting the last portion, the notes and melody stay about the same, but such is the case when people belt, it generally pushes one's voice to a slightly higher pitch considering the volume of air that is expelled in a shorter time....

    She should have been part of the rat pack!

    • @deuxjournalistes2993
      @deuxjournalistes2993 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ironically enough, she was part of the Rat Pack- the original Rat Pack, which was also called the Holmby Hills Rat Pack. It was Judy, her husband Sid, and their neighbors Humphrey Bogart, Laren Bacall, as well as Frank Sinatra. The term was originated by columnist Sheila Graham, who meant it as a jibe against them because she deemed them very exclusive and always hard-partying together. But they thought it was hilarious and even gave each other titles of treasurer, president, etc of the Rat Pack. In later years Frank took the name and used it for his well-known boy's clique.
