    you guys are legit my saving grace. my serpentine belt broke and without realizing it ruined the gaskets. its got 200k miles and has been sitting a while, got the serpentine belt back on only to realize the gaskets are super loose because radiator fluid just POURS into the engine, I can smell it - see water in the oil cap all signs point to very very bad head gasket. oddly enough water pump is fine lol. THANK YOU GUYS! going to tackle this next weekend

    I just wanted to thank you for this video, everything went well and the instructions show how to remove stuff in bulk which really helps.
    Our Disco II blew a head gasket 820 miles short of 200,000 miles.
    I would remove the throttle cables first and then remove the AC unit... works great. We had the heads resurfaced, installed new lifters (they were on sale), installed a new water pump gasket, new thermostat, upper coolant hose (because the bleeder broke) and replaced the coil pacs because its a PITA to replace these.
    Also just remove the exhaust manifolds if you don't have a lift, I ended up doing both because its easier to put it all together with the manifolds off completely. An air ratchet really helps putting the manifolds back on in this case.

    How this goes with the secondary air system in place on a 4.6:
    * One of my "Y" pipes was seized on the fitting on the head, and I didn't realize (because you cannot see) that you can grab the fitting to keep it from spinning if that happens. In my case the pipe was damaged before I figured that out, and I had to get a good used "Y". The nuts on the "Y" pipe are 27mm (or 1-1/16" if you have more SAE tools than metric). The fitting into the head is 19mm (or 3/4"). The fitting only has four flats, not six like something normal.
    * It's difficult to get to the lower head bolts below the aforementioned fittings, things go a lot better if you take the fittings out of the heads before trying. To do this, take off the upper exhaust manifold bolts which sit right next to the fitting, or else you won't be able to swing the wrench well enough on the fitting, especially given it only has four flats.
    Once that loveliness is out of the way, you're down to what you see in the vid. I tackled the secondary stuff just after pulling the rockers and pushrods.
    As a bonus, on the back of the right-hand head is one of those "christmas tree" wire ties holding some vent pipes (?) for something or another. If you're wondering why your right head won't come out. Also beware the head will probably still have water in it, which will come out the back, right into cylinder 7 or 8.

    Tip !. replace ignition coils and spark plug leads at the same time !.The expense is minor !, If you are doing the head gasket and it will take minuets instead of hours !.

    @33:00 I remember in high school (1987) my auto mechanics teacher came over to inspect our 3-man group's V8 engine that took us 4 class periods to wire up the non labled HT leads from the distributor to the spark plugs . He took one look at it, said 'great job', and then yanked all the HT leads off of the engine and told us to do it again. We were so pissed! It took us 20 minutes to recomplete it and understood why he wanted us to learn from it.
    At 50 years old I can still do this with my eyes closed.

    Excellent guide - something I need to do real soon as insurance policy - 356,000 kms without any issue, but taking half the top end off to do leaky rocker gaskets, I may as well go that little bit more and do it properly! I would recommend replacing the plug leads and water pump while you're there, regardless of how they look.

    Hi... I continue to strip the head because the rings from piston were burn but instead of reassembling back the same engine we use another engine from a series 1 Land Rover( both engine were the same size 4.0). We use the same harness from inside the series 2 but had to change the flywheel. With all said and done the engine swings but doesn't start is their a specific way the flywheel is suppose to set with its original camshaft sensor.

    I'm a bit late on the uptake, but could you give me some advice pls? I'm thinking of buying a 2000,Disco 2 V8. I'm confident in mechanics to perform this fix, but is it always a cert that the head gasket will fail? Also if you strip it that far is it best to get the bore liners changed or is it rare for the liners to fail?

    • @atlanticbritishrp
      @atlanticbritishrp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      liner drop is a common problem on old Rover engines. Retrofitting them new "top hat" style liners that prevent future liner drop
      is certainly doable, but you will want to go with a shop that has done that before and knows those engines and their common issues (like oil sump intake grime and grit and making sure that vaccuum system is clean to prevent engine overheats - one example)

  • @dat.heavy_rican

    is it easier to use the Arp stud kit rather then the head bolts the kit comes with and why ?

    • @steve447
      @steve447 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you use the studs, don't put the studs in the block until after you mount the heads. So, replace gasket, mount heads, insert studs, tighten using allen key. There's no way to mount with studs if the engine isn't out of the vehicle. Make sure you clean out the threads with a chaser, brake cleaner, and compressed air before you begin. You'll need to test that you can finger tighten the studs and they won't meet resistance.

    Dear sirs,I have a Landrover Disoverery 2 2001.I need to replace my head gaskets in mine.I watched both videos by Atlantic British,The first video is about 53 minutes removing the upper and the second video is about a hour and a half.In reality how long does it take because I can do it but I know it can’t all be done in say 2 hours.Does anyone know?Has anyone done this and knows how long it would take?Mine over heated because of a bad water pump and I have had a few opinions some say I might have to get reconditioned heads because my heads could possibly be warped?Any body have any opinions Thank you.

    • @atlanticbritishrp
      @atlanticbritishrp  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tough to say if the heads or warped without them being taken off first and having a technician inspect them.
      That said, if you're doing your own head gasket replacement, make sure you get new head bolts as well. The OE head bolts are one-time use stretch bolts and should not be reused and torqued again. We do sell head gasket sets that include new headbolts: www.roverparts.com/Parts/STC4082BKA
      One other thing to note, a common problem with overheating on these older Rover engines is the Oil Pump Relief Valve. You should checkout this video about our remanufactured engines at about 4:05 for discussion of that issue. th-cam.com/video/nA8IXZR5rPs/w-d-xo.html You'll want to make sure that valve is clean. If it's not, it could be the primary reason your engine may be overheating. Sleeve drop is also covered in that video - another common problem in those engines.

    • @PEGuyMadison
      @PEGuyMadison 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@spikedog23 D2, a D1 would be similar... it's a rough guess, I split the time up across a few days as I had the time and a plan in mind of how much work I would do each day.
      Just remove the exhaust manifolds and save yourself some time, I removed the entire cat because I wanted to inspect it as I had a clogged cat in the past.
      A DeWalt 3/8" rechargeable impact wrench comes in handy... it really speeds things up.

    Excellent how to video. Big job and it highlights some terrible design features such as that ignition coil totally buried at the rear of the engine.
