      Actually, you can take a little bit of isopropyl alcohol or even water, and see what the grain is going to look like. Although, I will say you don't know how stunning a top may be until you get stain and other things that help bring it out. But you can tell basically what it's going to look like. My problem with Gibson is half the time they're offset. Book matching should look like a mirror image.

    I really enjoy your show and was wondering if you've ever done an episode about Gibson venues in Nashville over the years. The receipt at 4:46 that says Gibson Showcase / Opry Mills is what reminded me.
    My dates & facts may be slightly off...but here's what I remember:
    Opry Mills was Gibson's combination guitar store and "factory in a mall". Seems like they assembled banjos and did finishing touches on mandolins (scraped bindings etc) down one side of the store under glass. I believe it closed as a result of the 2010 Nashville flood.
    Gibson Cafe Milano: an upscale jazz venue on 3rd Ave (not far from Lower Broadway) in the late 1990's/early 2000's.
    Gibson Guitar Cafe: their Lower Broadway singer/songwriter venue...roughly same period as Cafe Milano. It had guitar shaped tables and was located same side of street a block or 2 from Tootsies.
    You've probably got some subscribers who worked at the above or can offer more details.

    Notice that the tailpiece is off center. You can see that the strings "dress left" from the bridge to the tailpiece. The reason.... it compensates for the fact that the neck is not aligned with the center seam in the maple cap. Many Les Pauls have had this problem over the years.

    I absolutely love the 490R 498T pickups! In my humble opinion they’re better sounding pickups than that of the custom BurstBuckers they’ve been making for their 50’s & 60’s runs. I had traded the only guitar I had with them an Ebony Les Paul Custom from 2001 for a 2007 Custom Shop Custom in Vivid Cherry Sunburst w/black back & neck with BurstBucker Pros (I put a 57 Classic-plus in the bridge) and Sprague Black Beauty/Bumblebee paper-in-oil capacitors. But, I just picked up a 2021 Custom Shop Les Paul Custom in Alpine White & it has the 400R & 498T pickups in it & I LOVE IT!

    I have a 2010 and I’d like you to add to your collectible list. Gibson Factory was raided (as I’m sure you know) for having sourced ebony wood without meeting the law/standards of import. After that, Gibson Les Paul supreme switched to the Richlite fretboard, making any made with the original (and technically illegal) ebony wood more sought after. :)

  • @TheJeffcurran
    @TheJeffcurran ปีที่แล้ว

    I have another tale to add. The fretboard inlays are called double diamonds. In 2014 Gibson was planning a run of limited edition 120th anniversary (hence double diamond, 60x2) models. In preparation they made a couple hundred ebony fretboards with the double diamond inlays, and a 120th Anniversary inlay at the 12th fret. In the 11th hour, good ole Henry J decided that he wanted the 120th Anniversary 12th fret inlay on almost all models. History bears this out. Now they had a couple hundred ebony boards with the diamond inlays that didn't get used in 2014. Five years later they decided to use these boards on the 125th. They removed the 120th inlay and replaced them with a 125th inlay. The run was cut short at 31 by two things. Bankruptcy, and the inability to source anymore of the amazing quilted maple found on these.
    They still have quite a few unused ebony boards with double diamonds.

    I don’t know, I buy guitars to play, not to collect. I own a couple that are collectible to some, but for me, they’re players. ✌️🤪🎸🎶🎵🎶🎶

    More than likely these Gibsons were wired prior to the top going on the guitar. This way there is really no issue or delay in the assembly process. Trying to wire through the hole would be very time consuming. I'm sure the jack hole was made bigger to accommodate future possible repairs or upgrades. Thats just a guess though.
    Of course now that I think of it, doing the wires prior to the top going on may make it easier, but then you would expect to see the paint spray in the area of the knob posts and switch, unless they cover them somehow. Which I suppose would be easy. If it was something they used all the time they could manufacture something to just go over the knob posts and switch post, prior to spraying, like some sort of premade, prefitted cap.

    The 12th fret banner looks way better accompanied by the diamonds & cool that they put one on the first fret.

    Trogs, you need some tats on those meat hooks, bro! Some nice quilt figuring, maybe a nice artists rendition of the Steve Howe guitar right on the forearm? Maybe? Perhaps?

    I died a little when he put the bridge back, the wrong way around. haha The Black and white is 1 purfling, so you have the outer binding, and all the black and whites inner circles, are combined in pairs of 2. So 7 ply binding, is actually 4. 1 outer, 3 black and whites.

    Thats my 2014 LP Supreme in my profile pic. Because they are really chambered it does have a slight semi-hollow body sound. But it still sounds much better and more solid then my Epiphone LP.

  • @jjdillon2007
    @jjdillon2007 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very interesting. It's chambered enough to qualify as a semi-hollow, without F holes.

    A 125th anniversary born on the 126th year, would this make it more valuable?
    Is that a smudge, a scratch or an etching error on the truss rod cover?

    Super beautiful guitars but that 125 anniversary model is something else again. This Les Paul is absolutely gorgeous. Yeah nice case however a black interior is a let down in my opinion, a nice red or brown etc would have been a better option. Anyway great information regarding this guitar extremely interesting. Thank you 🙏
