That price tag seems like madness to me. Even $4000 for the regular non-signature one is really high for what you're getting. $9000+ is completely nonsensical to me for a guitar like that. It's just a LP with a piezo added, smacked around a bit, and with a custom truss rod cover.

Hi Austin, I found and started watching your channel a couple of months ago and I've got to say that I find it really interesting. What I find especially helpful is when you demo guitars and play the same or similar chord sequences and riffs because I can hear the differences in brands (Gibson, Fender etc.) models, and pickups. I've been playing guitar a long, long time and I find your reviews and demos of different guitars one of the best on youtube for those reasons I've stated. I know it can get boring to play the same stuff every time but I for one find it incredibly useful to hear the subtle differences using the same chord and riffs. That's not to take away from when you play pieces from particular guitarists. I just thought I'd let you know how I felt about it. Thanks for all that you do for the guitar community.
You're not the only one! Only very few really famous guitarists play G&L. Maybe Trogly will one day review the JC signature G&L what was it again? A Doheny? A Skyhawk?

So the binding “issue” on that guitar with the exposed maple, also appears on my 50’s standard! Some brain surgeon at Guitar Center thought it WAS a blemish and I got $500 off the guitar!!!! Add my vet discount, I paid only about $1800 for a brand new Les Paul Standard 50’s!!!!
I paid $350 for a 1983 silver burst Gibson Les Paul custom - in 1983. They couldn't give them away at the time, as they weren't pointy and didn't have a Floyd.
I have learned so much from this channel and even being a guitar player from the early 80's I purchased my first Gibson just two years ago with the help and knowledge from Trogly's guitar show 😎
I would strongly recommend checking out his solo albums Degradation Trip. The riffs and tone are amazing and were are written on a Les Paul Custom (the black one I think from an interview he gave). Great video!
This was a great example of his writing double album style, his impeccable influence to AIC in his architecting of the vocal Melodie’s and his guitar work. Great album, depressing yes, but a fantastic album
You really did a disservice to Jerry Cantrell with your description of Alice in Chains. Hey, I get it- you really don't know anything about them compared to their real fanbase. And while you may think of them and their vocals, a lot of guitar players have immense respect for Jerry because he truly is a master of making great riffs and producing groundbreaking tone. And if you're going to cover a Jerry Cantrell sig guitar- it would be really good to mention the great stuff the band has done since Layne's passing, as well as Jerry's incredible solo work. Not trying to dig on ya- but there are a lot of people that know that Jerry is and has been the architect of all things Alice in Chains from day one- and we have placed him very high on the rock pedestal. Now I'd really like to see them release a signature V like the one he's been playing recently.
@@johnnybird7593 Yeah, that one got me kinda flustered, I must admit. And really, was Alice in Chains really "grunge"? There are a whole lotta stoner/sludge bands that would probably beg to differ as Jerry was no doubt a huge influence on all of 'em. Grunge was really a terrible label as it really just refers to bands that came out of Seattle- there is no distinct sound you can discern from that- they were all quite different.
The V Jerry plays on Brighten is, as far as i know, a Hendrix recreation! I reckon when he was at Gibson, he told them to throw one of those in aswell while they're at it😁 🤘🎸🤘
Or buy 2 or 3 relatively high end guitars of various other types. You could get a SUPER nice 10-top non-private-stock PRS and still have 4-5 grand or more left over to buy some other awesome stuff. The price on this guitar is laughable, imo.
Jerry originally played a G&L Rampage at least until late nineties.AIC with Layne Staley is one of the greatest bands ever. Their last (with staley) self titled album is a masterpiece.
Tripod? Bruh tripod is a decent album don’t get me wrong but idk that I’d call it a masterpiece. Their other two full length albums were fucking splendorous
@@assnapkined9295 Thankyou. Hate saying it myself because AIC has always been in my top 3 and Jerry is an idol of mine as a guitar player. While I love Tripod.... For me it is their weakest record.. I appreciate the change up and the experimentation with sludge metal and such, (definitely unique and nothing like the rest of their catalog) I can never seem to keep that record in rotation much. Everything else including TDPDH are absolute bangers and masterpiece works of art to me. Especially Face-lift. Cheers mate.
Love it! Great surprise to see this review, thank you Trogly. Sure wish they would have done his burned up white Custom first. If I had the money to build my dream replica... *Had to add an edit, as I hadn't finished watching the entire video. Seeing Trogly play Chains riffs made my day!
I recently looked at a site that had what I believe was a first run wino near $20K. I'm looking at 60 on the first of the year. I dont feel that old but things like this remind me. A friend who plays added a synth pedal to his hear a few years back that required a piezo installed but the way it was installed was on the body in front the bridge. Have a cool effect of two guitars played at once since he still had his axe plugged in separately through a different channel.
Ah, the sound of a 90's LPC. For me, it's like pulling on some old, cozy slippers lol. 90's-era Gibsons are my era. I still own 4 of 'em & my '90 white LPC is & always will be my baby. It was the first Gibson I ever owned & I've had it since it was pretty much new. I got it from a bandmate who'd bought it new & didn't gel with it for whatever reason but as soon as I played it, I fell in love with it. My missus jokes that I love that guitar more than her & you know what... she could be right lol.
Interesting fact about Jerry’s dad. His nickname was Rooster. I’m guessing the JJ stands for Jerry Junior. Also, Jerry rocked G&L rampage guitars hard and the polka dots on the one he played a lot originally were actually burn marks from a blowtorch. He also sang on most of the stuff and he would write all those melodies and harmony together. He knows over a thousand classic cowboy songs by heart and can sing better than most lead singers. What made and makes Alice such a unique sounding band is it’s really more of a dual lead singer band.
Is the truss rod cover done like that so you can reverse it to look more like his original … just flip it over ?? But engraved underside to authenticate it?
Interesting to see the differences in this one vs the one we reviewed about a month ago. For example it looks like they barely put any yellow tinted lacquer on the headstock vs ours which was quite yellow. Similar looking checking but the gouges above the bridge pickup are pretty different for example. Keep an eye on that bridge, ours broke a wound string twice at the bridge, which has never happened to me before. Also the piezo had a little bit of a fit but apparently it's working better now vs last time I used it.
My dad got to see his wino live up close in the 90s when it was new and apparently he had a 12 string version as well that he used for "I stay away" and gave it away at a bar later that night in Michigan
I have a 74' wine red custom that I bought about 23 years ago. It was really beat up when I got it, everything that a collector would hate, 3 pc top, pancake body. Every time I use it with a new band that I join, someone will say "WTF is that, it sounds awesome and different", so there is something to those 70's LP's. I fixed everything wrong with it and still use it until this day. I loved it so much that I sold a 81' custom that was near perfect back then because it didn't feel or sound 1/2 as good as the 74. I recorded and toured with it the whole time and I think it sounds better and better every time I play it. It's gone through 5 pickup changes over the years(sweat and abuse I guess) and it still stands strong. It's still by favorite LP to this day even owning 30 guitars and still own 5 LP's and probably 100 guitars since. The JC is a rip off in my opinion, wine red were the easiest and cheaper Les Pauls to find about 10-20 years ago, I used to see them everywhere and I still see them often. I think people warmed up to them over the years so they are not so generic anymore. I love them so its no biggie to me.
I truly believe resellers like trogly are who guitars appreciate in value. They always wanna make money off their purchase, so they are always raising the price more than they paid. When they become mass market retailers, they control the prices on such a huge supply of guitars.
I’m 41 and tried to look like lane as a young man🤘🏻 This is my favorite review. AIC was the nail in the coffin for hair bands! Check out Rain When I Die. Excellent as always little dragon😎
@@joecooper7803 I still have the shirt and ticket stubs. They just came out with man in a box and they opened the whole show with that. It really was an amazing show.
Ppl dont realize Jerry sang a hell of a lot more on the albums and live than ppl realize. His voice blended so well with Layne's alot of the time you cant tell the difference.
Fun video. 👍 I’ve been following Trogly for years now. I’ve learned so much from you, man. 👍 I’m a big Les Paul fan. The majority of my guitars are Les Paul/SG variants. Plus a few other classics. I’m a sucker for the classics. Throw in a PRS Tremonti. I tried to get myself to sell it, but then I played it again. Nope. Classic Les Paul style with the PRS influence. I enjoy the historical info, and I enjoy your playing, Trogly. You clearly enjoy making cool sounds with very cool guitars. 👍
I have to say that’s one of the best sounding guitars you’ve had one the Channel in a while in my opinion and great playing trogly love Alice I’m chains and Jerry Cantrell so thanks for documenting
I realize you cant like absolutely everything Gibson makes when doing signature guitars. But my thought is Jerry is a guy deserving of a signature ax. I personally dig the wine red finish. I remember seeing him play it back in 95 when Alice toured with Metallica. I dont know how much modding someone like Eric Clapton did to his black Strat. Or David Gilmour with his red Strat. Yet both men deservedly received signature guitars. Is it because they were old guitars? You're right. We are getting old. Jerry's guitar is almost 30 years old. I'd rock his signature guitar...this one....and enjoy it as a JC Signature instrument.
Gilmour's Red Strat was a brandnew '57 reissue, built in 1983, when he bought it directly from Fender's UK warehouse in early 1984. Stock electronics were gutted completely in 1985 and replaced with active EMG SAs set very low in the pickguard to make them sound more transparent, with less output and midrange. It had no traditional tone controls - instead it had a combo of an EXG (treble and bass boost plus mid scoop) and an SPC (mid boost). Gilmour very rarely used the EXG for anything and mostly left it flat. He used the SPC - in moderation - for leads/solos (on "7" at most, never fully cranked). The guitar was first used with these electronics on stage at Live Aid when Gilmour played with Bryan Ferry. The switch to active EMGs happened because of intolerable levels of 50/60Hz cycle hum and RF noise, caused by lighting rigs/stage electronics and exacerbated by the long signal paths in Gilmours complex guitar rig. The regular Fender single coils the guitar originally had sometimes picked up more noise than string vibrations in that environment. Gilmour's Black Strat is a completely different animal. It started out as a second-hand late '60s CBS-era sunburst strat that had already been oversprayed/refinished with black paint when it was bought. Endless modifications over the years, too many to go into detail on in a TH-cam comment. You can find entire websites and books about that guitar and its different versions. It has had at least three different vibrato systems and half a dozen different necks, including one made by Charvel and - in more recent times - the original neck of the Red Strat! In a way it's the mother of all "partscasters", nothing on and in the Black Strat is orginal, except the wood of the body. And even the body was routed out and refilled to install a Kahler vibrato, then switch back to a vintage Fender-style. In a way the Black Strat is the Fender equivalent to Neil Young's "Old Black" Gibson. That guitar doesn't have it's original neck either - or anything else, except the wood of the body and (possibly) the neck pickup (under a different cover). People still refer to it as a '53 Les Paul, but it's really a mid-to-late '60s creation with the body of a '53. The "face" of the headstock is actually the one used on SG Standards because the neck was replaced by Gibson at a time when they didn't build any Les Pauls. That's right, the arguably most famous pre-humbucker-era early-'50s Gibson Les Paul on the planet is really a '60s "partscaster" with a '50s body, a '60s SG neck and a '60s Firebird bridge pickup (not a "mini humbucker", same size, but those have pole pieces and are constructed -and sound - differently)!
I have a 76 Custom that looks nearly like that one but the finish is way more yellow and not cracked but hazy and slightly soft after all the years in the South USA. It's not a gigging guitar much. Heavy pancake body, heavy like solid concrete. The original old pups squeal a little but great with a little amp in the studio. Robert Fripp played a Wine Custom as well.
I like this - the mix of centre position with Piezo is tasty! Not in the market for a Gibson really, (I still have my 1968 LP Custom 'Black Beauty') but considering buying the Epiphone version and putting some Monty's PAFs + 50's Loom into it. Recently picked up the Epi 1959 'tribute' with Gibson Custom Shop electronics and I really think it's a great buy - Epi / Gibson hybrid - maybe a sign of things to come? Thanks for the review (also liked the Wine Red 95 Custom you linked to)!
Hey Austin, that pink showing through in the chips through the finish is the red grain filler they apply before spraying the red nitro. It gives the maple top a pinkish color that looks more red when you clear coat over it.
Alice In Chains were about alternative chord structures, like flattened 7ths, and how an alternative melody could work with those structures. Saying they were all about the vocals and not guitar isn’t a thoughtful statement.
I respect Jerry so much and he has his own sound and has his place in music.I would never spend $10,000 for any guitar but if I did I think you could do worse.
JJ is for Jerry Junior. Also, his publishing company is called Rooster’s Son. A lot of Jerry’s career is devoted to his father. His white Les Paul is the “D Trip” guitar, nicknamed for the guitar he mainly used on the Degradation Trip album. The burns were from cigarettes- I’m sure lots of Gibson shop workers smoke and could put their cigs out on some white Paul’s 😂
The JJ emblem on the rear of the headstock stands for "Double J" ... Jerry Cantrell Sr. his father and Jerry Cantrell Jr. ... Jerry Cantrell's ranch that was shown on MTV Cribs is named "The Double J Ranch"
Can I ask you something? I notice the way the Tune O matics are set up for the intonation on these Les Paul's. They all seem very different, Yet all my Les Paul's (over the years) end up with a STEPPED ; 1, 2, 3 then 1 , 2 ,3. are that many of them that different (or out of wack) or what?
great one, I notice as this guitar came out that I was doing an Epiphone replica with my les paul as I modified that way almost exactly without knowing Cantrell's version. Me too I love that era of music but am not a fanatic of any band. I think this Gibson it's a cool item for a fan, haters let it be hahaha
All alice in chains songs are written in Eb. So all six strings are tuned down a half step. When Jerry opts to use drop D he lowers the pitch of the low e string down a step which of course is in relation to the tuning of the other strings so you wind up with Db Ab Db Gb Bb Eb
The tones were close through the headphones. That piazza (idk) makes it really close. You can hear. Unless you’re a super fan that’s looking to get it autographed or sumn I think it’s very expensive
Thanks for the review- i I have a Cantrell and I love it. It feels good (the lacquer the matted finish etc) and I love the tones too. I have many customs with the 490/498 combo and they don’t sound like the Cantrell. Thanks for the video
That's just Drop Db or Drop C#. Don't make it more complicated than it needs to be... "E flat Drop D" is a nonsensical description when you think about. There is no open D string anywhere in that tuning! But yes, it works great for certain things!
Yeah those chips of paint that came off look out of place ... My guess is they went a bit too deep on checking and it wasn't supposed to be like that... Not good for a murphy labs
I love the JJ, but it's too expensive. I'd rather get a "run of the mill" 80s WR Custom for half the price... Btw, not a big deal but you forgot to mention the stereo output jack....
For me, the worst part of this guitar for me is that I have a 2020 Les Paul Custom and the only thing that's different from my guitar is the piezo system, which I can put on it. As far as I know, current model Les Paul Custom's use hide glue and long neck tenon...I kinda wish Gibson made custom "jerry cantrell" pickups for this guitar, and took out the corian nut which I think everyone hates universally.

What a great deal, how do you like the neck profile ? Love my 60s neck but would love to try the 50s.
Seems pretty toxic to attack a random Guitar Center dude because he tried to help out a customer. Be better. Really disgusting comment.
@@josefeld7164 really nice and fat. like jimmy page style and resonant
Survival of the fittest
I paid $350 for a 1983 silver burst Gibson Les Paul custom - in 1983. They couldn't give them away at the time, as they weren't pointy and didn't have a Floyd.
Funny thing is I Bought a Wine Red Les Paul Custom 2008 a month before the announcement and it's cool again to have one.
Those were always cool guitars
Yeah mine's a 78 standard, and it's been cool for 43 years. Wine red all the way baby.

Dude Jerry is amazing and easily the best melodic guitarists of the last 20 years. AIC continues to turn out amazing hits to this day.
almost 35 years now.
I’m impressed by the imagination and effort put into making a guitar more expensive. And hitting it with a hammer must be a cool job.
BTW, the output jack is a stereo jack for the Fishman Powerbridge. Check it out sometime!
I have learned so much from this channel and even being a guitar player from the early 80's I purchased my first Gibson just two years ago with the help and knowledge from Trogly's guitar show 😎
There is a awesome story JC tells bout him and EVH and EVH equipment
I saw AiC open for Van Halen, and for that set he mostly played a Music Man EVH guitar.
@@ArchieOnEarth I think in a video he talks about his original MM EVH and mentioned it got stolen but I think he later got it back
@@Malum09 yep.. Good tale
What a fantastic guitar aesthetically, acoustically and sonically. I think it’s worth the price it demands. Oh my I need to have piezo on my LP.
90s is vintage today since back in 2010, 80s was considered vintage.
I would strongly recommend checking out his solo albums Degradation Trip. The riffs and tone are amazing and were are written on a Les Paul Custom (the black one I think from an interview he gave). Great video!
And he managed to finish it with a broken headstock.
Rob Trujillo (Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves, Metallica) on bass and Mike Bordin (Faith No More) on drums.
Thanks for saving me a rant! :)
Ditto
Right! Not really a guitar based band😂. I want some of what he's smoking...
I reckon when he was at Gibson, he told them to throw one of those in aswell while they're at it😁 🤘🎸🤘
Will it hold it's value? Probably. Will go up in value? Probably. Would I pay that much for it? Hell no. I'd get a Prs private stock instead!
Good for you.
@@MajorDook1 just had to be heard didnt ya... sad
I'd get a navigator but it's not quite enough to get an ESP custom shop built LP
@@TheAhirishman Why you so mad?
Or buy 2 or 3 relatively high end guitars of various other types. You could get a SUPER nice 10-top non-private-stock PRS and still have 4-5 grand or more left over to buy some other awesome stuff. The price on this guitar is laughable, imo.
Jerry originally played a G&L Rampage at least until late nineties.AIC with Layne Staley is one of the greatest bands ever. Their last (with staley) self titled album is a masterpiece.
Yes indeed
Jerry played a white les paul custom that entire time too. Its been seen enough that its not specualtion
@@TyCorr You're right! I'm just saying that the G&L was his main guitar.
Met Jerry with In Flames at LAX airport. He was a super chill guy. 😊
Love it, always loved the whine red. No pick guard, even better.
I like the look of LPs without pickguards but they serve a physical purpose. Lot of people use them as a pinky rest for picking accuracy.
I love pickguards

Trogly's in the HOUSE!!!
@@garretazonsa I'm kind of surprised he was able to get such a heavy tone out of his Deluxe Reverb!
He sounded pretty good today.
My dad got to see his wino live up close in the 90s when it was new and apparently he had a 12 string version as well that he used for "I stay away" and gave it away at a bar later that night in Michigan
I think the JJ insignia on the back of the headstock is the same as the one he uses for his ranch in Oklahoma.
To answer your question: "JJ" or "Double J" is the name of the ranch that he and his dad, also named "Jerry" (the guy "Rooster" was written about).
Nice breakdown, Austin. I think it's worth it with the Piezo. Those pups aren't cheap. Awsum review!
Alice in chain was an amazing band , RIP lane . I love this guitar but probably would buy a new custom.
I bought the Epi version of this and it quickly became one of my favorite guitars to play.
I wonder in 50 years how differently factory aged guitars will look when they have also naturally actually aged?
This Custom sounds amazing, never thought I’d want a guitar with a piezo pickup.
Me at 5:06 “whoa wait hold on a minute I don’t give a fuck”
Jerry Cantrell is my favorite guitarist to come out of the 90s grunge movement
Agreed 100% Kim Thayil and Mike McCreedy were great too. But Jerry’s the best
I truly believe resellers like trogly are who guitars appreciate in value. They always wanna make money off their purchase, so they are always raising the price more than they paid. When they become mass market retailers, they control the prices on such a huge supply of guitars.
Ok, I redact that because trogly says he will sell this one for retail price.
I’m 41 and tried to look like lane as a young man🤘🏻 This is my favorite review. AIC was the nail in the coffin for hair bands! Check out Rain When I Die. Excellent as always little dragon😎

I’ve been following Trogly for years now. I’ve learned so much from you, man. 👍
I’m a big Les Paul fan.
I believe the JJ name comes from the name of his fathers ranch.
jerry janch
"you talk about these bands like you never heard of them before"... you took the words right out of my mouth.
Who here remembers when the Wine Red color on Gibson guitars was a couple of hundred cheaper than the other colors.
Are those dents and scratches above the bridge humbucker supposed to be there or did you get a beat up guitar?
Alice In Chains were about alternative chord structures, like flattened 7ths, and how an alternative melody could work with those structures. Saying they were all about the vocals and not guitar isn’t a thoughtful statement.

Love AIC and Jerry. I think you'd guitar is super cool and would definitely own one if I could afford it. Love the whole vibe of it.
I respect Jerry so much and he has his own sound and has his place in music.I would never spend $10,000 for any guitar but if I did I think you could do worse.
Do you put the same strings on after reassembling it?
He does, most all of the guitars he demos are with the strings they shipped with.
@@hkguitar1984 yep, unless he breaks one.
Congrats on 200K subs, Austin.
Got to see AIC in 91 Clash of the Titans then in 92 opening for Van Halen. Amazing how polished they became from 90-92

JJ is a tribute to his father. A veteran. As is in Jerry, Jr AND Jerry, Sr. Together.

I love my LP Standard which I actually play and use everyday as my workhorse. Isn’t that why we get guitar? 🤔
Speaking as a player? Yes! Speaking as a collector? No!
I have a mint 98 Gibson Joe Perry signature Les Paul. What is it really worth?
Hi. You said the tuning was Drop D then another’s half step down -was that all strings or jut the low E?
Does that make it C# tuning
All alice in chains songs are written in Eb. So all six strings are tuned down a half step. When Jerry opts to use drop D he lowers the pitch of the low e string down a step which of course is in relation to the tuning of the other strings so you wind up with Db Ab Db Gb Bb Eb
@@TyCorr thank you - much appreciated 🤙

Eh. He was mainly known to use the G&L Rampage mostly. And wasn't his LP Custom black? I don't remember a red one.
Isn't a step below drop D called drop C?
the tunning trogly utilized is like a D standard with the low E String tuned down to C
E flat Drop D is such a great tuning to play in. Alice in Chains, Early Linkin Park, 10 years. Love it 🎸🤘
That's just Drop Db or Drop C#. Don't make it more complicated than it needs to be...
"E flat Drop D" is a nonsensical description when you think about. There is no open D string anywhere in that tuning!
But yes, it works great for certain things!
Maybe the Trans blue was a Les paul studio lite, he played a brown one in the would video. My favorite Les paul model of all time
Yeah those chips of paint that came off look out of place ...
Have you done a review on a 1996 GLP Standard Plus?
For me, the worst part of this guitar for me is that I have a 2020 Les Paul Custom and the only thing that's different from my guitar is the piezo system, which I can put on it. As far as I know, current model Les Paul Custom's use hide glue and long neck tenon...I kinda wish Gibson made custom "jerry cantrell" pickups for this guitar, and took out the corian nut which I think everyone hates universally.
