I was on my way to Germany in 1972 after being drafted into the Army. The airplane I was on had a loop of about 10 songs via headsets. I only remember this song and it will always have a special place in my heart. Thanks Greg!

Thanks for having served, especially in the Army during that time. My uncle pulled three tours in Viet Nam but he was a AF pilot and not in the danger that ground troops were in. Blessings.

I just need to share this with someone who is on the same page as me...last week a friend posted Still You Turn Me On from Greg Lake Solo in 1972 and I have been obsessed 24/7 since...although I was 4 yrs old in 72 so I suppose it's not like I missed out on a chance lol I have been studying the videos non stop day in, day out all week & cannot believe the completely different faces of this man over the yrs. my God was he adorable in that 1972 video chewing gum,his facial expressions, in love!

I've been doing the same thing since I saw a video of his acoustic version of "Still... You Turn Me On" from ELP's 1974 California Jam performance. It's incredible! The vocals (outside, chewing gum, you can see his breath) and guitar are impeccable. Greg Lake is absolutely mesmerizing. I can't stop watching that video! Nice to know someone else feels the same, even if it was six years ago.

My mom bought me their double live album when i turned 14 in 1974 at the behest of my girl at the time, she hated them,The Carpenters were more her speed. But if you've never seen a Carl Palmer drum solo,Keith Emerson rock a Moog or listen to Greg sing ya got some catching up to do. Its worth it.

so did the breakup with your gf go something like this? - "look, you're perfect in every way EXCEPT your preference of the Carpenters over ELP. let's just be friends, ok?" anyway i likely hit that record the same yr and same age! always loved most of their stuff, and just this last weekend, good friend and guitar virtuoso/teacher John Tosco [of www.toscomusicparty.org/] taught me "From the Beginning", the basic part, not the lead or kybd. i smiled ear to ear hearing myself play those beautiful chords! G.Lake's a phenom in my book, legendary sounds. i can sing the words but my voice is no GL, but it's so fun to sing it i lose some of the shyness to try it anyway 8). rock on!

    Pura tristeza...
Pero me quedo con el recuerdo
de cuando los escuché en 1972.
Y aún los sigo escuchando y hasta
saqué esta canción con mi guitarra.
    Gracias por publicarla.
    Saludos desde Chile

I tend to agree. This was the highest charting track of theirs in the U.S., and for good reason. Quite frankly I thought it should have charted higher for longer; but songs like this in the early 70s were relegated to FM while teeny-pop and metal dominated the airwaves. This is a classic, and has always been underappreciated by the mainstream -- which I never understood. Beautiful piece of work; the original had such a spiritual and weightless feel to it. I used to play it over and over just to hear each instrument in isolation and appreciate the raw talent and artistry it took to put it all together to form this track. Beautiful arrangement, beautiful production.

    • @HeartWorX.Creations
      @HeartWorX.Creations 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yes, indeed...I was exposed to ELP in my late adolescence by a much older cousin who came to live w/us. I had GIANT headphones that I spent a lot of time alone on the wknds with, listening to this inside my head, the music used to take me away from the world; it actually saved my soul -I believe! This is a brilliant & timeless classic, their best IMO! Way ahead of their time, obviously, to not know any instruments & yet be able to “FEEL” them deep in your soul & to be able to distinguish each one while playing its part & to hear all the notes go rhythmically in synch - purely a magical experience...the lyrics of this & his voice & just everything-pure brilliance & artistry! This music to me is otherworldly, ETHEREAL, and the feeling it gives one, especially when listening to it w/earbuds, playing in yer head & the clarity of the notes/tones/sounds, who needs a/any drugs or alcohol, when U listen to this, it makes U high from the frequencies because it’s so highly vibrational, at least that’s what it does to me... “U see it’s all clear --U were meant to be heeeeeeere.....from the beginning”.....RIP Greg & Keith, masters of their era...-...TRULY. 💚💚🙏🙏🌞

A great clip and thanks for posting.
As we age we compliment our declining purity and clarity with increased technical appreciation. At 61 I am much beaten up by time and experience (and choices both good and bad), but, overall, I am a better pianist by far than ever I was when young and pretty. Similarly, my voice is not as sweet as it once was, nor my range as wide and high, but my command of it has waxed the greater through practice and experimentation.

Lori Patchen - The video of Still You Turn Me On was from California Jam and Greg Lake played it solo as part of the ELP set. I stayed up til 1AM watching it and didn't see it again until over 40 years later. When I hear that song on the radio, I always see him with the chewing gum and the facial expressions.
    A. The Drums in this version are awesome, just thank God Carl Palmer didn't do a 5 minute solo.
    B. Who cares what kind of guitar this song is played on? It's like whining that Michelangelo could have used a better paint brush on the ceiling of The Sistine Chapel. (The artist, not the Ninja Turtle)

May I ask your interpretation of those lyrics? I can still see him chewing that gum and facial expressions too. He was just adorable.

Kim, check out California Jam 1974 with Greg Lake. You talk about a looker. That man was gorgeous. And he had that voice that could melt butter. I was 13 in 1974 but I would have jumped him. LOL. I heard Greg quit drinking and smoking. His later concerts (2012, 2013) he sounded a lot better and not so hoarse. Hell, he's 65 now! We're all getting old. I'm 51, going on 52 in Fall.

I've listened to ELP's music in the '70's. I had a boyfriend that was into them. I never knew what they looked like. What Lori is referring to is I came upon footage of Greg Lake on TH-cam singing in California Jam 1974. He sang "Lucky Man" and "Still You Turn Me On". I fell in love with the man. I was 13 in '74. LOL! His ballads are what put ELP on the map in my book. Well...we all get older....Greg is in his 60's now. His voice went to shit from smoking but I think he quit. Maybe it's gotten better now I don't know.

I never knew Greg Lake toured with his own band. And it looks like a nice small venue.
I saw EL&P in Denver, Co., late 1973 - early 1974. Sat waaaaayyy too close to one of their four sections of speakers. Yikes!

I like the part where he smiles at the lead guitar player at the end of his solo.
