  • There's nothing more mysterious than something that seems to hate you and want you all at once. This is the case for the Miracle, the deity-esque force that the world of Blasphemous is shaped by.
    Here, I do my best to explain theories and stories behind the lore and secrets of the Miracle across both Blasphemous 1 and Blasphemous 2, from its characters to certain items and collectibles, to even the playable Penitent One. In addition, I talk about it's significance, its themes and motifs, and all the means and methods that it effects the world of Cvstodia.
    This is the story of the Miracle and its purposes explained.

    Fun facts!
    Yerma and the woman that's being mourned by several spirits are inspired on the andalusian poet and writer Federico García Lorca's theatrical works "Yerma" and "The house of Bernarda Alba"
    Montañés is Martinez Montañés, one of the most famous sculptors in the spanish golden century and also a very important part of Sevilla's art history.
    Sierpes (the snake) and Regina (the shop owner) are famous streets in the city of Sevilla.
    The lady of the charred visage is also inspired in a true story here in the city.
    As an andalusian myself, I love that this game's lore became so famous outside Spain ❤

    The only thing that botherd me was the story of the baby, in the game it says that the blindfold was the thing they put on the baby to make him placated, the wicker woman was made because the mother asked for someone to make a statue of her so her son wouldnt miss her, from the fact that the statue is alive i think the miracle gave the statue life

      Thank you for your comment! And thank you for pointing out that dynamic between player characters and whatever Soulsborne villain they face. I know it can be easy to point fingers in settings like Blasphemous to whatever is likely the most responsible (and it certainly doesn't absolve the Miracle of its wrongdoings).
      As for Exposito... yeah... I can't help but feel sorry for the lad. This is legitimately the most straightforward case for why the Miracle (and therefore belief in it) is so strange and adversarial. But it's part of its mysterious nature, I suppose, to bless and curse randomly when desired.

    The Miracle for some strange reason reminds me of an SCP named Imago, a godlike entity that latches onto the faith and belief of others, but doesn’t understand the concept of metaphor, abstraction or and figurative concepts and language. Even when it wants to appeal and interact to those who feed it faith, it’s blessings and effects on the real world are cruel and monstrous, warping and killing those who give it faith (knowingly or unknowingly). It holds no malice and harbors love and curiosity, but it’s existence is anathema to ours.

    • @expychristian
      @expychristian  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Very lovecraftian, yeah. I'm seeing a trend here between eldritch beings that interact with humans as if we're ants; completely apathetic, even if it "cares", because it doesn't know "better" in a sense. I don't necessarily blame them, but it sure seems to be universal all around. Good observation there, friend 😊

      Heck, I feel bad for the Penitent One, people keep causing him a lot of trouble despite him intentionally taking up their burdens, in a way. It's not necessarily the people's worship that's bad, it's the fact they keep praying to the thing (The Miracle) that legitimately causes their suffering for its own benefit. There's much that needs to be learned within the in-game world, that's for sure.

      I'll be honest, I followed guides to make sure I would get the true ending/secret ending. I'm not one to take spoilers of that magnitude to heart, so I'm still able to feel genuine shock/emotion when the story builds itself up to said ending; if anything, it clarifies what lore is being tossed at me so that I CAN understand what is happening. That said, some of these bosses did give me a RUN for my money several times, especially Isidora and Benedicta.

    I think about what Worship of The Father means in this context. What's going on here is that humanity is undergoing suffering, penance, and purification in order to replace the high wills as gods themselves by devoting themselves to revering the suffering underwent by others. The suffering granted by the High Wills is the very thing which brought about their end.

    • @expychristian
      @expychristian  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That does line up with the Penitent One becoming the new "Father" for the initial "good" ending of B1 and the "bad" ending of B2. The Penitent One WAS the only one that could do all the things to help the people around him; everyone else strangely just wanted to put him six feet under, not paying attention to what the people needed. Then again, most of the enemies (and therefore other Penitents) wanted the suffering to keep going, be it mindlessly or intentionally. And as you said, the same thing the High Wills kept egging on ended up being their undoing. It's an intriguing dynamic the games portray, since, until Blasphemous 2 and B1's Wounds of Eventide, we don't really know if we're doing what's best for the world.

    Don’t forget the Confessor (in Blasphemous 2) who ends up getting possessed by some god greedy to consume guilt. I think the third game will explore this or other entities; perhaps new gods similar to the High Wills will try to take over Cvstodia.

    • @expychristian
      @expychristian  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was wondering about that, yea. I didn't personally use the Confessor powers too often, especially in later playthroughs, where I was more mindful of the area-dangers, so the confessor revelation was late for me. It could be just a Miracle-worshipper, given his apparent hunger for guilt, but I don't know. • @expychristian
      @expychristian  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good question! It seems that the "Miracle" is the universal abstract force that makes up the elements of the world in the game. In-game, the High Wills refer to the Miracle in a past-tense, even saying that their world, the Other Side of the Dream, was there before they were. So compared to the Miracle, the High Wills are actually "younger." The High Wills use the Miracle as a sort of divine filter, in order to twist the faith of Cvstodia's people and make it their source of life. So the Miracle came beforehand, while the High Wills use it while they were alive to keep themselves sustained.

    • @divad7137
      @divad7137 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Because even if The Penitent One defeats the High Wills, the Miracle remains, and it has a plan of trying to incarnate itself, meaning it has a consciousness, which could mean it is a formless entity that seems more powerful that the Miracle. Also, the heaven in Blasphemous 2 is even more confusing to me since that means there is powers beyond that of the Miracle

    • @divad7137
      @divad7137 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@expychristian So the Miracle could be more like a primordial force than a conscious being per say then. Kind of like the concept of pleroma in gnosticism, or Chaos in greek Mythology. And the High Wills are the concept of a Tulpa, of an idea or concept that comes to life through belief and use the primordial force of the Miracle as a tool to keep themselves alive and powerful. Also the Incarnate Devotion could be again the prayer and belief of that little boy fueling again another God and entity to appear. In this universe, any prayer and any belief comes to life from what it seems in the most literal and primal sense, and is very interesting. Loved both games and have a very interesting Lovecraftian Catolichism of a cosmology and religion that is just fascinating to me.

    • @expychristian
      @expychristian  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @divad7137 I think (and want to believe) that any DLC with Blasphemous 2 will give a conclusive answer to that heaven you're referring to. I believe the Miracle is trying to keep itself "alive" because the High Wills have used it for so long. They've been the most powerful and longest wielders of the Miracle. The general theory I've seen is that the Miracle is regenerating a physical form of itself because of the influence of the High Wills. Since people started praying to the Miracle again, it would, in theory, revive the High Wills and therefore start the whole cycle once again.
      However! Clearly, there's another force greater than the High Wills that does not want the High Wills doing it's thing again. Hence the plot line of Blasphemous 2 (if you follow the true ending) and the presence of people like Anunciada.

      @divad7137 I would say yes to all of those things. It's the most "grounded" way of breaking down the Miracle and all it's appendages (High Wills included). I will note that the High Wills seem to have a personality and motives separate from the faith of the people (though their intentions are definitely because of what the people wanted to believe in the Miracle for), but largely speaking the concepts of pleroma and Tulpa you mentioned are the most logical, evidence-based perception of what the Miracle and High Wills are.
      I loved the games. I've seen that 1 is still considered better and I can see why: the sort of Silent Hill mystery of the Miracle is what made it so dreadful to even think about, even as it helped the main characters. Nonetheless, a perfect blend of eldritch mythos and irl Catholic-Renaissance. And I'm glad you enjoyed it too. Appreciate the questions!

    So assuming that the miracle warps you to your hearts desire, how does that work with people with stoicism? Do they warp in some being that is in permanent quantum lock? What about nihilist?

      Good question! My interpretation is that the Miracle would likely cater to the more physical and blunt aspects of stoicism. Likely transform the person into some sort of stone golem or something similar. Quantum locks? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that I do not know what that means. But! It could be that sort of metaphysical and abstract spirits could take control of the physical host in question. As for nihilism, there's actually a bit of nihilists in the games. And they don't really change, they just get extra buffs and abilities. The second boss, Orospina, Blasphemous 2, is a sadist (different, but along the same vein). And there's lore pieces of people with similar nihilistic views. What happened to them? No exact clue, but they'd likely get warped in a sense that they can enact their philosophy in a painful way. Or worse, the Miracle completely warps them to serve itself. Just my thoughts.

      @@expychristian Hmm interesting, and by quantum lock I meant being locked in space and time, completely immune to any form of physical attack, it really depends on how you see it as, similar to the weeping angels of doctor who, they are only able to move when nobody sees them

      @myaccountgotbannedsoimause2548 You could say that the High Wills are quantum locked. Since only you (Penitent One), Crisanta, and Escribar could see them through the Miracle. The idea of space and time shouldn't be farfetched from the Miracle.

      Appreciate the honesty! Is that the right way to pronounce it? I never knew if it started with an "S" inflection or a "Cus" inflection. I'm not fluent in that regard.

      @@expychristian no worries. It definitely got me at first. But that is how U's were written back in the day. Hence why although it's technically double v, we pronounce it double you. Sorry if I came off mean, that was honestly my only gripe with your video. Loved this video, keep up the fantastic work!
