Wow, I had no idea how well optimized all of these little visual tricks were. You've really made me appreciate Sonic Heroes in a way I never did before. I haven't played it since I was 10, and I thought it was really bad back then. I honestly want to give it another shot knowing how much effort they really put into every set-piece.
You'd be surprised how common that is! A while back in Kerbal Space Program this actually led to a bug where your spaceship could actually crash into certain GUI elements. Also a lot of "vingette" or other screen overlay effects are implemented by putting a transparent texture in front of the camera!
@@Blorb12 that’s color compression, which is not noticeable and virtually required for space optimization as high color depth images take up a lot of space, and some color isn’t even necessary.
I think heroes atleast needs a HD remaster, adventure 1 & 2 got one and I believe heroes belongs with the classic 3d sonic games. Sega are too afraid to move away from their mindless boost formula, they have no Confidence in making a heroes 2.

Dessaw I don't like games that handhold you and to me generations is just one of those games, that's why I find it mediocre, I'm just not the type of gamer that gets enjoyment out of it. I like games that can make you rage, make you frustrated because the journey to me is about overcoming challenges and if a game isn't pushing you then is it really worth it? I'm not speaking out for fans but more for myself. From what I've seen, the sonic fanbase only seem to care about speed and that's why boost mode is still relevant even though the very concept of it severely hinders the level design as well as game mechanics. Sonic today, to me has really minimalist level design and game feels far too automated. I was going to say it's so bland it may as well be a fast version of temple run but then I remembered, Sonic. already has a temple run clone that isn't as automated as the main games themselves.
Pretty sure that "Robotnik" is the retcon, since he's always been called "Eggman" in Japan. I find it odd they kept the old name when he was reverted back to Eggman.
More than that, the story was different between both as well. For Japan, Sonic actually takes place on Earth, and in America it's Mobius. So when Adventure came out, nobody in Japan was shocked there were humans around, it was always Earth in the Japanese scripts.
In one of the cutscenes of the original sonic adventure a dude said it's robotnik which is his formal name and in that game he wanted to destroy station square so he can build robotnik land the world's ultimate city on top of it's ruins
This game had always mesmerized me with its backgrounds. They all looked so vast and had a nice realistic natural look to them that as a kid made me wonder if they were actual places on Earth. Great job on the episode!
Regarding the goggles at 3:15, I know of another game that did something like that. The Cartoon Network game, FusionFall, had an item called the "Bean Scout Hat", and it was pretty much just a spike with little decorations at the top when you would look at the item itself without any head for it to be on. I found out about it when the game glitched out once and loaded my characters clothes but not the actual skin part.
Check out Donkey Planet, then. He has done Boundary Break type episodes on Jak 1, 2, and 3. And the results are pretty funny when you see what happens to characters in cutscenes when they are off camera.
+Sonic e Nuno I really want to see Sly Cooper because of the racing and shooting segments that you never get to explore because you're either racing or covering Murray/Sly. I also want to see what the drivers look like in the Mugshot racing level since they look unique.

Oh man I'm going through the entire Boundary Break playlist and I never thought I'd see my all time favorite PS2 game! When you announced it was a thing in the Sonic Mania one, I was excited as heck! Love it, Shesez!
I really love this video a lot. Sonic Heroes was my first and my favorite Sonic game. I was only 8 when I first played that game, but I could never get all the chaos emeralds to beat it. I finally managed to do it last summer at the age of 19, and I honestly cried a lot upon finally finishing that game. Anyway, thank you for making this. I've always thought this game was really beautiful and I always wanted to go adventuring beyond what I could, and while this is a little different than I imagined as a kid, it was an amazing experience. Plus, an extra special thanks for ending with potentially my favorite area in all of video games, that little flowery exterior of Mystic Mansion.

Another great Boundary Break episode! I like how the developers handled Mystic Mansion in general, some parts of a room that you think is just a room changing when you hit a switch is basically a teleporter that sends you to a different room.
Was chilling at a friends and I put on an episode before he went to bed, he wanted to know what this was called. This is awesome, you've got a great interest in this and that gives me interest.
i love your videos. i'm always hoping that you'll do slow pans of the backgrounds and floors, especially in metropolis type scenes. it'd be so cool to be able to just zone out on the details, you wouldn't even need to do a voiceover just exploring the environments with the game music would be great
The controller support for the PC port is also limited. But you can get some neat high-res, widescreen hacks for it. Dolphin, the Gamecube emulator, has a better controller support and lets you change its internal resolution (widescreen included), so in the end it's the same thing.
I can still remember being a kid and imagining being able to hack or modify my favorite games to have cool features or new stuff in general to enjoy. Especially pokemon rom hacks but camera hacks like the one for this game has always interested me. Great video, I love watching this series :)
Interesting point: The short versions of the courses are simply the long versions with items moved, removed or replaced to block you. It's possible to "jump the gap" and finish at a "long course" end with a "short course" team.
Great job as always, and I wish I had more friends who were interested in boundary breaking to share with, but other than a few specific games that you've covered, most everyone I've shared this channel with were kinda meh about it. I'm still a fan, though, and I'm going to continue to watch every episode just because I love boundary breaking games and have come to really appreciate your style and balance between using proper terminology to explain programming concepts, but also taking the time to simplify those concepts enough for the average person to grasp without sounding condescending. That's a really hard balance to keep.

Sonic Heroes was such a fun game =) I have very fond memories of me playing through the various stages, as the different teams to eventually 100% it. Some challenges were very tough, but not THAT crazy. I thought Sonic Adventure 2 had a lot more difficult A ranks to get. Casino Park was my favorite zone in the game. The music is kick-ass! Thank you so much for a boundary break on this game. There were a lot of neat things here; like the Whale in Seaside hill. I never noticed that when I played through it ;)
I recently heard a fellow fan point out how mesmerized they were by Heroes' water effects back in the day. I don't recall ever taking notice myself, so I had to boot the game up again for yet another playthrough to take a look. My verdict? That is indeed some enchantingly sparkly water, which is especially impressive considering all of the trials Sonic Team had to go through to get their first multiplatform Sonic outing up and running in the timeframe allowed to them.
I must've missed the tweet about the end being a whale. That's amazing! Also, I can't stop imagining Eggman being impaled in the skull with his goggles. It looks really painful. It might just be me, but the sky box of Metropolis at 4:01, looks a bit like the city from City Escape. Just distorted a lot.

Eggman being called Eggman was not a retcon. It is a Japanese series and he was always called Eggman there.

I must've missed the tweet about the end being a whale. That's amazing! Also, I can't stop imagining Eggman being impaled in the skull with his goggles. It looks really painful.
It might just be me, but the sky box of Metropolis at 4:01, looks a bit like the city from City Escape. Just distorted a lot.
