Washing your Brompton bike
Firstly, I do not claim to be the ultimate authority on bike maintenance or cleaning. I simply do what I believe to be right based upon experience and the Brompton manual.
I use a Green Oil bike brush, a sponge, some warm water and some bike specific cleaner. There are many good ones out there just don't use detergent that you use to wash the pots as it’s full of salt!
It's not generally recommended to use a hose to clean your bike, as this may force water into areas like the hubs, hinges and headset, pushing out the grease inside and damaging bearings.You will see that I do but I have it on the most gentle setting, not much more than a trickle.
Give the frame parts, wheels and underside of the bike (where dirt will mostly accumulate) a thorough clean.
If your bike has a Sturmey Archer hub like mine, be careful to ensure no water enters the driveside axle end (where the gear indicator chain enters the hub) as this couldl become trapped inside the hub and cause corrosion.
I use Green Oil chain wax as I find it is very long lasting as well as being kind to the planet.
