Brompton bikes should be free on the NHS! Plus - a quick update on my titanium seat-post.
There is nothing I know that can lift my mood as quickly as a ride on the Brompton, it's so effective I'd argue they should dish them out instead of pills, free on prescription.
On this occasion I decided by dose of Brompton tonic should be taken and washed down with black coffee - just what the Doctor ordered.

My Brompton Bikepacking Gear - Only 5kg!

As I was preparing my equipment for next weeks hike of the Cleveland Way in Yorkshire, it occurred to me that this is the same gear I use if I go Bikepacking as well. All these upgrades look and sound nice. But how does it affect the warranty from Brompton?

    • @stushikesandrides
      @stushikesandrides 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My dealer told me that mods using factory bits - eg different front chain rings - cannot have any impact on warranty. Using non-factory bits - such as different hub gears or double front ring conversions - could impact warranty. Even then, it would be for the dealer/Brompton to show the non-factory modification was the cause of the failure. In other words, if you did a non-factory gear mod and all the paint fell off the frame or a hinge failed, that would still be covered. Also bear in mind the dealer makes the initial assessment. Chances are if you made a claim, the dealer wouldn't even mention to Brompton the component had been changed. It is a risk to be aware of however.

    Have you done any dark or espresso dark roasts? I’ve tried a few and the beans seem to crater. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong besides maybe not backing down the heat enough but then it takes about 15+ minutes to get to dark or espresso and I feel that’s too long. Any insight?

    • @stushikesandrides
      @stushikesandrides 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sadly I’m afraid I haven’t, despite only really drinking espresso or black americano coffee I prefer medium or occasionally a light roast so I stop about a minute after FC. After reaching FC I make sure it’s a ‘rolling’ or fully active before backing off 5°c to 235°c until the end of roast. If I wanted darker I think I’d hold it there until second crack so as not to stall the roast. On your roast times, if 15 minutes is from starting with a cold drum I don’t think that is unusual. If it’s after pre-heating I’d agree. Good luck experimenting and different bean varieties all seem to act individually anyway so it’s all a little bit by chance. Enjoy the fruits of your labour.

    • @brendenpetersen5481
      @brendenpetersen5481 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@stushikesandrides thanks for the tips! Yeah, it’s 15 mins or so with a preheated drum. I’m also wondering if the extreme heat, high 90’s temp today messed with the ambient temperature of the room and affected the roaster. Was doing it in the garage with the door open, so may try a different area tomorrow. I think in my mind, keeping it at that temp after FC was going to stall the roast so I increased the temp from 235 back to 240 thinking it needed a push to get to SC. I’ll try leaving it at the lower temp and see if it will avoid the craters.

    yes I was going to say that you appear to be bobbing before you said it yourself. I think that the suspension system causes that. That is obviously lost energy making the bike less efficient than a standard bike without suspension but tyres on a standard bike offer enough suspension anyway, because of the light weight of a racing bike and rider and without the bobbing. You get bobbing on a mountain bike with suspension as well, all wasted energy and a less than smooth and efficient pedal stroke and all that scaffolding in round tubing causing masses of drag. Much prefer my cannondale system six aero bike. It's like comparing a Ferrari to a Morris 1000. Quaint and nostalgic though, in a retro sort of way.

    These old bikes look interesting. But when it comes to small bikes..Nothing beats. The Tern verge X range. Especially the X20 and the greatest of them all. The Tern Verge X11. Most people in the west are seduced by names like Brompton and Moulton. But they have been surpassed by Tern in the last 10 years. If I have to choose between a £15000 space frame Moulton. Or a £2500 Tern Verge X11. I will take the X11 Everytime. If money is no object then sure you can buy all these overpriced pieces from yesteryear. But if you want a modern affordable masterpiece. Thats as fast as they come. Handles the road even off road like a boss.Climbs like a boss and is a work of art to look at. The X11 is one bike to rule them ALL. I Have owned one for 7 years. And its as good as the day I bought it.

      Trust me for hills they are amazing. I needed a great hill climber that was foldable. My friend had the X11 before me. And there was this hill where I live that used to kill me on my heavy cheap folder. A Carrera intercity. My legs would be done and I would be huffing and puffing by the time I reached the top. He told me to try it on the X11. And sure it still wasn't easy. But far easier than the other folder. From that moment I fell in love with it. And bought one for myself. I dont have a car. So investing in a high end bike was worth it for me. And over the years it's saved me over £20,000 in travel expenses. And I've been thousands of miles on it.

Looks so different and when people think of a British bike all that comes to their Mind is Bromptons. I steered clear because alot of people think they are the be all and end all of small wheel bikes. When you look deeper and see other bikes like Terns, Moultons and Birdys. You realize there's better small wheeled bikes out there.

    I have a question about washing Brompton bikes. I'm hesitant to use water when cleaning my Brompton bike as I'm afraid it might lead to rust. Have you noticed any rust developing on your Brompton bike? Do you think it's safe to use water as long as you thoroughly wipe it dry afterward? Have you ever inspected the inner tubes? Are they in good condition?

    • @stushikesandrides
      @stushikesandrides 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a good point you raised but steel has for a long time been the traditional material of choice for cycle manufacturers and they have learned so much about the problem of rust over the years that its not the issue it once was. That said many people just like yourself who have concerns treat the inside of the frame with Waxoil ( popular with classic cars owners). Mine is fine and I just wipe it dry and spray the frame with silicone frame protector from Muc Off. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @yh3386
      @yh3386 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your message. I understand that Brompton is aware that steel-made bicycles can be prone to rust, leading to some parts being coated with anti-rust powders. If we're particularly concerned about rust, it might be a good idea to consider T-Line bikes, primarily constructed from titanium material. It seems you're already using silicon spray for rust prevention, which is a good practice. Thanks for sharing that information with me. Waxoil seems to make the saddlepost slippery. Do you apply waxoil to the inner tube of the bike?@@stushikesandrides

    • @stushikesandrides
      @stushikesandrides 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@yh3386 Personally I have Waxoiled the frame, but only when the bike was new and nowhere near the seat post assembly. I have a close inspection to the hinge areas and cannot visibly detect rust so far 🤞

    • @yh3386
      @yh3386 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I understand, and it makes sense that you only waxoiled the frame. I sprayed anti-rust spray inside the tubes, and I haven't ridden my Brompton in rainy weather, so I don't expect any rust damage. Additionally, all bolts are waxed and coated with thick grease. While watching the video of you washing the bike with a hose, I wondered if water could get inside the hinges. Initially, I thought you were covering those areas with something like rubber tubes, but I see now that I was mistaken. Your feedback has been incredibly helpful, and I truly appreciate your kind responses. By the way, are you in the UK? @@stushikesandrides

    I have swapped the awful std Brompton pedals for Shimano XTR SPDs. My cycling shoes have reflective tabs on the heels plus I ride with ortlieb panniers which obscure the pedals anyway, but which have huge reflective patches on which are highly visible at night when light is shone on them.. Schwalbe Marathon tyres also have reflective walls which again are highly visible. My Endura cycling jacket has lots of reflective patches and arrows on it. I use Supernova E3 Pro 2 dynamo and Exposure Max D front lights. I have Supernova very bright rear lights and also very bright Exposure rear Redeye light. I also have Cate Eye TDLR 600 rear light a stalwart of rear lights. When I was rear ended on a roundabout by a stupid bellend back in 1999, the RAC van driver who witnessed it when asked by the defendants solicitor how visible I actually was said, "He was lit up like a Christmas tree." Shimano MW80 insulated winter Goretex boots. Mine are at least 10 years old and still going strong. Sadly Shimano no longer make them otherwise I'd buy another pair. I wear Endura liner sock (their summer short socks) inside TOG socks or thick Icebreaker hiking socks. I am normally a 45 but got a size 46 boot. Feet stay warm the whole day. A very methodical bike wash. Well done. My wife and I have 2020 M6L's and I love wiping them down after each ride with a microfiber towel. I actually converted over to waxing my chains and have not looked back. It's amazing how clean the whole drivetrain remains. But with this much washing I would advise you to also spray the inside of the frame with a Car, Rust Protection Oil to prevent it rusting from the inside! As Brand New I gave mine a full Auto Polish (And found out that the one tape was nearly worn through to the paint, after 2 folds! I have complained to the Factory but they don't/hardly care! My fork and back triangle are from titanium (2019 Superlight) as my seat post and hopefully, soon also a new titanium stem post (for now 9 kilo with mudguards (+ internal Brompton toolkit))? I have found some clamps from carbon+bolts and -alu to hold the mudguards and the stays (China), as the originals from The Factory are from really "Heavy Metal", even on a "Superlight" (-titanium stays))!
