About 1970, my dad and I rode a Santa Fe passenger train from Albuquerque to Los Angeles, and we sat for breakfast in the dining car. My dad, always the jokester, started singing that Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe song when the server asked what we would like to order. I think my dad expected the guy to smile or laugh, but he just stood there stone-faced, holding a pen and his order pad until my dad finished the verse. The guy took the order and then walked away. He had probably heard that song a million times.
Dad & I worked at the San Bernardino shops, he for over 30 years and I the last 5 years before the shops were closed and moved to Topeka. in the later 70s. I grew up watching, traveling and working for the Santa Fe. Any wonder when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, it was being a Santa Fe Engineer. I think I still do in my dreams. Once you got railroad blood in you, you keep it for life. Got my first taste of working in heavy industry there and appreciating real team work and feeling family on the job. We had family friends & relatives working there. Never thought Santa would merge, being such a strong operation and having a vital railway area. But it came to be and with Burlington Northern, Warren Buffet bought it all. But memories will last forever for helping to develop the west. Santa Fe All The Way.
Railroads got some banger songs, Ghosts of the rails for NYCR, All aboard Amtrak for Amtrak, This for ATSF, great big rolling railroad For UP, they’re just so good!
It's a pretty old song, originally made for a movie from the 1940s and became a popular song in its own right: th-cam.com/video/52fnRcFBGR0/w-d-xo.html
My top 4 favourite railroads/railway in the world 1.Union pacific 2.Queensland Rail 3.Santa Fe railway 4.British railways 5.Amtrak 6. Southern Pacific 7. Reading Railroad 8.Baltimore and Ohio 9. CSX 10. Norfolk Southern
Do you know if there's a full copy of this version of the song out there somewhere? I can find plenty of the older versions of the song, but not this exact version.
It's possible it was recorded specifically for the ad and there is no full version, which is the conclusion I'm leaning towards, but given that someone has managed to find the original audio from the ad, it's possible there might be a version of this out there, possibly on a promotional cassette or record. I tried Shazam, I tried looking up every version of the song I could, nothing.
If Judy Garland saw that The Atchison Topeka And The Santa Fe has been changed to The Burlington The Northern And The Santa Fe she'd probably have a heart attack and die again, But more importantly she'd go "Wow these meds have left an impact on me, cause I'm seeing a lot of Orange!"
I adore the cheerfulness and how energetic and honestly catchy this commercial is. It speaks wonders about those old railroad advertisements.
I love blasting my eardrums out with this masterpiece
is union pacific for me same thing

At least when UP merges with a competitor, they usually let them keep half their name! Western Pacific and Southern Pacific are two!
