  • Over Spring Break of 2023 (3/20/23-3/24/23) Prima, Skittles, and I hiked the 96 mile Lone Star Hiking Trail near Houston, Texas.
    A few notes:
    Tent setup- it want anything original, I just forgot the tent poles and my trekking poles in the car and had to improvise
    Dog pack- Prima generally doesn’t wear a pack as she is older (9 at the time of filming) and has better success without one. I also hate fiddling with them all the time. However, I had the opportunity to test out some gear as a freelance writer for Greenbelly Meals and so that is why she is wearing the ruffwear approach in part of this video.
    Music- “Pony Boy” & “Kentucky Winder” by Adam Hurt, “Bobcat in the Brambles” by Al Petteway

    Wonderful! The trail looks a lot dryer from when I did it in February. My feet were only dry while in camp.😄

      It was a nice mix of enough drinking water not to have to carry much, but without excessive amounts!

    Great video! Love the music and photography! Planning my thru hike of the LSHT in late February , early March. Those mosquitos and this heat is no joke 😂

    Nice video as usual. A trip without improvisation is not a complete trip 😊.
    I stop putting carrying bags on my dogs. They got stuck in bushes and didn't understand why they can't fit between those to little trees 😂 funny to see at first but they get frustrated then mad and started doing stupid stuff and hurting themselves.

    Love it. Thanks for sharing. This hike is on my list. Did you have any issues with other dogs at all? I've read feedback from other hikers about encountering loose dogs on the Phelps section. I've been concerned about taking my two dogs on this hike because of that. We typically prefer more remote trails, but living in Texas, this one has piqued my interest.

      I only had one dog encounter and it was mostly just bad timing. A guy had just let all his dogs out to run in his yard as we were walking by. I grabbed a hold of Prima like normal, but some of them charged up and started tearing after poor Skittles! I was finally able to get her to come to me and the guy was very apologetic/nice (the dogs are normally in runs it seemed like). I've encountered various dogs on our adventures and usually if you are confident and face the dog straight on/tell them off it is fine. I wouldn't let that stop you from hiking.

      @@TheMostImportantStep Thanks so much for the info! One of my two is dog reactive (fear-based), so I have to be cautious about how close other dogs get to him. It’s fine when all dogs are controlled, but if one isn’t and insists on approaching him, then we can have trouble.

    Very beautiful there ,!! I've lived in 2diff parts of Tex but never in or around the Housto area. So, I had NO IDEA parts of it was so forestry (?).. the low elevation makes it " swampy " like some of the coastal range. I c Ruff Wear has some new colors !
    My boy is 8 and still has his red one. But now I only put food and not water in his pack. Only becuz we r not going out like we used to. So I watch his feet 👍🏽😊. I thot Prima was cute in her colors!! And the path way a nice " highway " !!!!. Strange 2 c the fire. I guess a control burn ?.
    Bummer on the tent pole 😢.
    Good to practice problem solving skills 😃🤭👍🏼👍🏽.
    It was good to c u & the kids out...
    And, taking US along with u !!! 🎉🤠. Been a moment of time. So along w math teaching? (??)
    U r doing freelance writing 2 ??. That's cool !
    Outdoor stuff I'm sure 😊. never heard of them B4.
    But, it's a BIG world out there 🤔. Glad u all r ok n ... Doing well ?!!!!.
    Question; how do you find these places !!! Do you have plans for summer?? A 'nother little jewel hopefully 2 share ???!!
    With ha n pack u look JUST AS U DID the first time I saw u on CDT vidz.. so that's great news !!!
    Knee seems 2 b a distant memory !!?
    Well, peace and keep on rocking the free world 🌎🤠 😂

      Hi there! I find established hikes like this through internet searches, but most of my other hikes I find/make up by looking at maps such as the Gaia app. I look for areas with a lot of public land, then go from there.
      The current plan is to spend June doing some shorter hikes and preparing Cache boxes, then I will be starting my next thru hike at the end of June. Should start seeing those videos the beginning or middle of July.

    Good to see the gang back!
    I've been looking for shoes for my large dog, I remembered in one of your CDT videos you mentioned a shoe/sock for large dogs. What was the name of the product?

    • @trakyboy5128
      @trakyboy5128 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm guna say it was RuffWear products. OTB !!!

    • @TheMostImportantStep
      @TheMostImportantStep  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve used a variety of shoes from mushing boots (fabric) to ultrapaws boots too ruffwear boots. I don’t have a super big preference, but have mostly been using the ruffwear boots or Petco knock offs recently as they last longer
