- Today, Ian is in the bay to show you his key takeaways on how to get faster club head speed.
Every golfer can benefit from more club head speed in their driver swing, but a lot of times we can increase swing speed just by changing how we approach the swing of the golf club.
Ian walks you through his 3 step process to increase speed by 5+ MPH!

Well guys you did it again. The last speed journey you put out in the fall I jumped on board and increased my average ball speed by 6mph with some speed stick and personal training. At 64 yrs old and 155lbs mid/high handicap brought my average BS up to 142. Prior to this video I had set 145 as my new goal for the end of the year but I think I’ll bump it up to 150mph by December 31. That’s a stretch goal, however, my new golf coach has me working on some of the concepts you laid out in the video (hip turn, extension, ground force) so I’m just starting to incorporate some of the technical concepts. Currently doing yoga, Pilates and personal training so as long as it feels ok with my body I’ll keep working it. Oh handicap is starting to edge down also.
Thanks for the video on gaining club head speed. I took your suggestions out on the course and saw improvement fairly quickly. I am 62 years old and over the last few years my driver distance has only been averaging between 235 yrs to 245. After several holes and adjusting my swing to your suggestions, I hit 2 drives distances I have reached in many years. 2 of my drives reached over 270 yards!!! Wow...thanks!!!
Ian seems super cool. Can tell he really enjoy's watching Mikey's progress and things he works on.
Adding this one to the faves playlist. Lost about 20 yards due to injury. Hoping to get some distance back and then some.
Great job again guys! I really think a down the line camera angle would be super helpful when discussing this, especially when talking about depth and stretch in the backswing - would be helpful to see what you're talking about. Not that this is bad by any means, of course! 😂 just maybe something for future videos like this. Awesome job!!
I'm pretty sure that's the first time Corey Pavin has ever been brought up in a gaining speed video...😉
Wee Pevin the legend!!!!
I'm pretty sure he was dead last in driving distance while he was playing. Hahah
@@jeromeo12he wasn’t always the slowest. Changed his swing and actually stopped lifting his heel.
great video! for me i struggle with mobility. would love to get some vods on some off season mobility and speed training to get the body ready. cheers boys
We're at TPI in a few weeks to discuss this so stay tuned my man. 👍🏻
Great video guys. I actually tried these at the start of the year but struggled with accuracy, missing to the left. I then tried speeding up my tempo and presto, a little push or baby draw. Keep em coming!
Hope to see a review on the vice clubs and the new titleist GT lineup soon!
Vice clubs look awesome. More expensive than I expected. Titleist GT lineup does look kind of cheap though imo.
Was interesting to see your ball flight as the drill went on.. That's my issue, great warm up on range then horrible drives first 5 holes. then later in round as I loosen back up and say "F it" I hit great drives. Any tips to avoid the first 3-5 hole driving yips off the range into the round. Thanks
This!
The key is making sure the miss is a one way miss. For me the left miss is much easier to manage than a wide open club face sending the ball right. At higher speed i really only hit the ball right to left, that really helps manage my flight.
Try hitting less than driver for the first few. 3 wood, 5 wood or even a utility iron. Get those in round jitters out of the way and confidence up.
I’m a longer hitter for most peoples standards (180+ ball speeds) and there are plenty of rounds where I’m hitting 6 or less drivers per round. Some of that is for course reasons but some of that is during the first few holes just to get in the zone, if needed. YMMV
I'm going the opposite direction... dropped from 100mph (during my fitting with you guys) down to 95mph. I do feel like it's more me not doing the proper steps like not rotating enough and being short armed in the back swing. Thanks for the tips!
I have focused this year on turn. I'm up maybe 2-4 mph. When doing that I may tend to pull it or draw it more so I align my ball to about 1:00 and look there also when swinging. It has worked so far. I'd throw in that people have to get through the ball. Swing it!
I feel most people like myself have an urge to keep their head and chest facing toward the ball. So the rotation ends up being almost a fake rotation that’s more arm adduction than a proper shoulder turn
Jumbomax ultra lite can help... Less tension in the hands and arms... I'm a M/L glove , I use a small jumbomax ultra lite ... Helps me to stop hooking and therefore I can go after it more, knowing the duck hook is not coming
Hey Ian! When you generate a wider turn in your shoulders, do you find yourself taking the eye off the ball? When i work on a bigger shoulder turn i notice one of my eyes can barely see the ball anymore. Are my shoulders not steep enough? Or is it just something you get use to?
It's most likely a mobility issue that your current range of motion causes your head to rotate too much.
Great stuff guys! keep it up.
Thank you!!
I'm a 17.4 hdcp and live in the mid 160s ball speed. Clearly I need to work on some things because my swing speed would indicate that I should be much better.
Right there with ya
In the mid-180s myself and struggling to break 90 these days lol. Around the greens are just kicking my ass at the moment
@@BigDawgCAM I know the feeling. I've had a few rounds this year in the low 90s with 40+ putts. It's sickening.
@@BigDawgCAM mid 120 club head speed?
@@Tywithay chaps, please trust me on this, get Arcoss or a similar stats programme. You may be surprised at where you're leaking oil
During the downswing, are your arms passive, or do you actively initiate the movement at some point to speed up? If the arms are initiated when and how during the downswing?
Is the change in shot-shape simply a product of club path, or is shaft flex coming into play as you picked up speed?
The most useful feel I've heard for getting more width in the backswing and better weight shift was from Danny Maude. He said on the takeaway to imagine you're trying to toss a heavy bag of sand. He mentions you wouldn't just stand there and try to do it with all arms. You load all that weight into your trail side and the body naturally rotates.
For me, my 2 biggest issues are not making a full turn in my backswing and rushing my transition. As I get into my round I can really resolve those issues and hit long, effortless drives.
Game changing tips
Does this still transfer to Iron head speed as well?
So 20 years ago I was longer off the T with a 43 to 43.5 in driver than I am now. Obviously age has something to do with that but I can still hit 108-110 MPH and feel like I have better contact using shorter shafts and the longer ones leave me feeling like I'm leaving distance out there due to poor contact and the miss hits. Currently at 45 in playing length and standard lie. I've toyed with dropping .75 in and going to the upright setting on my AI smoke TD to get it to an old school setup. Any recommendation about what to do for weight to compensate for that in the head? I already play my 3 and 7 wood's shorter anyway.
Ian I'd like to see 👀 these swings in slow motion just to see how you shallow the club to come from the inside but. Would appreciate it
17:20 That's exactly what Cameron Champ does. I saw it on a different video yesterday. He does exactly what Ian was showing in the whole video, except much faster overall 😉
Can I ask how it’s the number 1 contributor to being mid to low handicap? My club head is there but because of some minor issues I’m a 20 handicap
Seems like my sequencing gets all out of whack when I chase speed. I hit it all over the course post speed training. When my club speed goes up my strike quality/efficiency goes down, so I’ve stayed away from it, but I’d love to figure out why I can’t figure it out haha.
How often per week to speed train? What about those of us who lift 3-5 days a week? I've found if I try to gain speed at night after a morning work out, I'm still slow.
Speed train before your lifting session
@@scottellis1292 yeah... Just not really feasible at times, means I gotta get up at 5am since I train 8am
Not really a quick fix. Gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.. you shouldn’t speed train everyday. Every 3rd day would be fine and see some gains. So if you’re only lifting 3-5 days a week then you could schedule it out so only a day or 2 a week is it a speed/lift day….. why do you gotta get up at 5 if you lift at 8? Speed training should only take like 15-20 minutes
I avg (per trackman) was 98.5mph. I would love to be at 105-110 controlled. I'm sure I could get that if I just sent it, but it would be wild.....I will say that when I just rip it without over focusing/thinking it are the ones that go the straightest and fartherst
I’m jealous. Ian makes speed gains look so easy! I tried speed training a few years ago over the offseason and it ruined my swing. My handicap has been skyrocketing ever since. I regret doing months of speed training with only speed sticks in my garage. I wasn’t hitting any golf balls and didn’t realize I was ingraining bad habits that were ruining my clubface control. Sold my speed sticks and taking lessons now.
ooooo yes! I asked for this video! Can't wait to watch this one
Hmm. Weight shift back to the trail leg and breaking the trail arm away and up from that "Hogan elbow" being glued in is pretty contradictory to what my coach instructs. Granted there are many workable swings, but thats quite a lot of variables to work out the timing on 😢 Always been taught that weight forward, lead arm straight, quiet hands, head still, trail elbow glued in and rotate but don't shift weight; stay weight forward.
A note on bigger turn: If you start to slide with a bigger turn in the backswing, you are tilting too much. Gotta flatten that shoulder turn out to get rid of the slide. Conversely, if you are stacked too much on your lead side or got a reverse pivot going, you are probably too flat or lifting in the backswing. Gotta push that lead shoulder down in the takeaway to keep your weight more on your trail side.
What ventus was Ian using? 6x?
Yes, new Ventus Blue 6x
When i do step 1 the deeper rotation, it "feels" like im swinging slower, because its less whippy, but i have confirmed on trackman it is just as fast or faster than my handsy swing. If anyone else feels like its slower, just go test, its faster!
I normally cruise around 160 ball speed and hit it very consistently. I’ve found that if I really snap when I release the club head, I can jump up to 180+ ball speed. The issue for me is that the ball just sprays everywhere when I up the speed.
one thing I wish was covered is how Ian gets to 110mph let alone beyond that. His swing just looks so smooth, almost too slow, to be 110mph.
When I want to hit a bomb I feel like My width of swing is bigger more extension not really feeling like Im swinging faster but smoother sneaky long
Thanks for this video! 🔥 Will be using this for the rest of the summer. Would you please do a video on driver shaft length? This video where Butch Harmon tells Iona that he likes shorter drivers is interesting. He says if the driver is longer than 43.75" - 44" its hard to move the driver into the right position if it gets a little stuck behind you. th-cam.com/video/L67iqpOYxtk/w-d-xo.html
Use the golf rubber band on a roll play weekend Mikey 😂

What is Club Champion? Are they with TXG?
Can you have as many “Real” high handicapper” (> 20 hcp) videos. The ones I have seen on TH-cam all seem to strike the ball very well.
Watching talented players with years of experience does not convince me to undergo an expensive fitting.
Isn't ball speed more important than clubhead speed?
Raising club head speed will raise ball speed.
Am I remembering right that 1 mph of ball speed equates to 2.5 yards?
Clubhead speed. Remember it this way, if you take a 300 yd drive, and divide it by 2.7 (it's not 2.5), then you have 111. That's certainly a CHS, not a ball speed, number.
@@MrGozieBoy Now that I think about it 2.5 yards for every mph of ball speed would be crazy long drives. Thanks for your response
Why is smash factor so low? I assume you’re hitting a few out of the center and we should be seeing 1.5 smash.
I'd like to see Mikey do it! As we all know Ian is 110 + Mikey is more like us mortals ☘️🤙
turned more today and speed went from 112 to 117
What is Ian gaming now?
I find range balls cant cope with the way my prov1 can and then even though i know ive smashed it the back of your mind is wondering why the flight is not what youd see on course which the give doubt on course.need the boys to send me an old gc quad for my living room.....any chane mikey/ian 😂😂😂
I´ll take the baseline drive any day 🙂
To paraphrase…
I’d like to go back to Scotland than play in the Memorial
Why you are hitting the ball that low on the face?
Ian.... so when you say your driver; could you elaborate on what driver you are referring to as you have A LOT of them? 😂
Sorry boys but I have to disagree with club head speed being the strongest factor to what a player shoots. I’ve played a lot of golf with a lot of people. All with different levels of skill, speed, strengths and weaknesses. Power, without control, especially off the tee, can be very costly.
Hitting the ball OB, in a hazard, into the trees, unplayable lies is brutal and can lead to even more strokes as often times players try to get it all back with that next swing.
The low hanging fruit when it comes to trying to lower your score is eliminating penalty strokes and avoiding 3 putts. I’m sure you noticed almost all of the shots you went after were pull hooks to the left. It looks fine on the simulator but on the course and depending on the design and features of the hole they could be in real trouble. I’m a bit shocked at this video tbh.
