Amazon Workers Walk Out To Demand Raises And Time Off

  • Amazon workers in Shakopee, Minnesota - outside of Minneapolis - walked off the job on April 29, 2022 to demand time off for the Muslim holiday of Eid and the reinstatement of a $3/hour raise. Amazon had given the workers the pay bump during "peak" season, but then took it away. One worker says that Amazon responded to the walkout by docking those who walked out up to 10 hours of their time off.

They cut wages just like this at my UPS warehouse in Texas. At the warehouse you're hired as a seasonal employee with the chance to become full time, The full time employees during and for months prior to peak season were making $19 and the new hires were making the same. Shortly after peak season "Ended" every single non supervisory employee had their wages cut to $15 an hour. we didn't walk out though everyone just quit :(

I'm impressed that Tyler guy is a PA/Asst Manager and he's speaking out for the regular employees. He probably cost himself any chance of getting another promotion. Usually, once someone gets a management/ "leadership" promotion at Amazon, they stop caring about the Tier I issues. Typically, they all still pretend they are looking out for you (which is just n act/bs, their only concern is numbers, productivity and staying in good graces with their senior managers), but this guy seems to really care about people.

While working for a just socialist economy, unions are the first step. Unions were started by socialists and worked until corporations colluded with the us government and helped the mafia and corruption infiltrate the unions because they were scared of socialists and other left groups that were pressing for better working conditions like the eight hour work day, paid time off, sick pay, social security. In the eighties under Reagan a large scale union busting started and support declined under each administration both democratic and republicans. The result is jobs shifted overseas, mass unemployment, loss of living wages, poverty, homelessness, hunger increased drug use/crime and the fall of this country. Also under these controlled politicians there has been no major support of antitrust laws and almost total destruction of regulation in the food industry. There will be no hope under the duopoly we have, neither party is going to support change in this system. We are going to see more homelessness, hunger, violence and drug use as people become more desperate and lose hope.

Not so easy when you've got medical needs (Amazon insurance is great), have children, are the primary wage earner, are caring for an elderly parent, are new to the country and aren't yet fluent in English... many factors go into the decision to stay and fight rather than walk away.

Taking money away fuck that. My job is trying to do that to me. Take away 2 dollars from me. I work night shift for the differential and now they want to get rid of the shift. I threatened them that I would quit. I had leverage because I know how to handle a department that every one hates and because I am actually learning my new department. HR and my manager are acting strange around me now though since I threatened to quit for another job but yeah fuck these companies don’t let them steal your money 💰

Got news for you; retail unions are pretty weak. Don’t confuse those with trade or public sector unions, a $3 dollar an hour raise probably isn’t going to happen happen and you’re going to have to factor about $70 monthly union dues. It will help some what for things like some minor time off issues but then everything will be prioritized by seniority and not your personal family needs. Also these types of unions don’t offer much in protection because legal issues will go to the federal courts where there is tons of precedent that works against you. Your best bet is to work for a city.
