  • Shiloh, one of Worthington Publishing's Old School Games, is taught in a play through format. Part 1 lays groundwork and plays through the first four turns of the Confederate attack on Ulysses Grant's Army of the Tennessee that occurred on April 6th, 1862. Subsequent parts will show the game played through the end of April 6th. Viewers will learn game concepts while they enjoy viewing the game being played.

Thanks for the play through vids. Ordered the reprints of Shiloh, Antietam, and Seven Days from Worthington Games. Looking forward to some big Civil War battles.

Nice play through… and well explained.
We’re playing this game now and it’s a lot of fun. We’re going into turn 10 and the CSA are a few hexes away from Pittsburgh Landing. One tip for the CSA player is to bring the 2 elite morale units close in by the Tennessee River by the Union gunboats. If they’re selected to take hits by the gunboats they have excellent morale to pass and press the attack towards the landing.

Hello Mr _N. Yes I like this game, and I think Shiloh is possibly the best ACW battle to wargame. The first day is always a tense affair. If you find a cheap copy, I can recommend "Fury in the West" as another good Shiloh game. I have the Battleline version; later picked up by good 'ole Avalon Hill. Enjoy it! -- Paul

@@theoakenknight1748 Yes. I have that Avalon version of “Fury in the West”. It has HUGE hexes on it. But, the counters….
Time has certainly improved the quality. I’m an old grognard from the 70’s that probably has well over 2K games. Many different systems and many different periods. Looking forward to viewing more of your videos.

nice work... a few comments... I think those really were 3 CSA corps. They had division commanders that the designer chose not to represent I believe. That's a 40,000 army as you said. That's typically not 3 CSA divisions. I came to the same conclusion as you on the union activation rolls. At first I tried to do it like in the rules but as you said it did not seem right. 1 roll if a unit was within 5 hexes seemed right. I believe it is required you only attack a unit once and you have to combine all your firepower in one roll. I do the same as you attacking with 2 colored dice and referring to the moral check only if needed. Its so burdensome in practice to roll that second moral check die when required. I have a real problem remembering to update the casualties and its time consuming to change out the hit markers. I think I need to follow your lead with a system of marking casualties and updating all of them at once at the end. thanks for posting

Does Facing play any part in this game?

    • @theoakenknight1748

Hello Romilos! Yes, in Eylau facing is an issue. Depending on the base formation (e.g., line, attack column, etc) units will have some combination of front, flank, and rear hexsides. Exactly which hexside is which will be determined by the base formation. Great question! Thanks again. -- Paul

@@theoakenknight1748 Thank you for your reply...I have played Eylau many times by CoA and several other games from the La Bataille system...! Great job!

Great introduction and play through. I was wondering where you found the flame game aids you were using?

Hello Mr Dray! You are not the first to ask that question. I bought the flame markers on Amazon; they are by a company named LITKO. Search for LITKO flame markers and you should be good. 🤗. - Paul

Nicely done. Just a clarification. In the playbook it says that the Union has no 0500 turn, so I believe that means you do not even need to roll to see if the Confederates are spotted, which allows the CSA player to move a little closer in anticipation of attacking the next turn.
