    Hi Kamon! I have a question regarding the soaking of the boxes in this wax. If you were to cut a box in half after the soaking, do you have an idea as to how deep it penetrates? Thank you as always and I hope you're having an excellent beginning to your 2021 beekeeping year.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Fred I have tried soaking for 6 hours, 15 minutes, half an hour and all are so shallow after being cut I would need some time of professional equipment to determine the depth. The seal is absolute unless compromised by damage but is very shallow. I happen to be dipping 45 boxes and 28 pallets right now during this sleet we are getting. I hope you are having a great season also.

    I’ve watched several who do the wax dipping. One of them (I think it was sand hill?) says he uses just under 4oz of wax per deep box so 1/4 lb roughly. He does his quite a bit hotter than 250 though so that may affect the numbers. Thanks for posting this by the way

    Hi Kamone.
    I have a question. I waxed the hives and after the first heavy rain black spots and blemishes appeared. I bought paraffin from a reputable dealer and boiled it for 7-8 minutes at a temperature of 130-160c. When I pour water on the hive, it stands and the wood does not absorb it.
    Sorry for bad english.

    Kamon, thank you for getting this video out! The standard chicken scalder is built with a 50,000 BTU burner. In your video, you mentioned a 100,000 BTU burner. Was the replacement burner you modified this scalder with a direct replacement. If so, would you mind sharing exactly what model and where you purchased it? It would be awesome if the 100,000 BTU burner used the existing mounting hardware thought, it would be understandable if you had to get creative. Let us know. You and the family have a great week:)

    Just weigh a few boxes before dipping and then after. That should give you a weight of wax used. per box

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      What about the moisture weight that is forced out of the wood? Kinda complicated

    • @cecildean3648
      @cecildean3648 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      But that should be about the same as it is replaced with wax. Would need to calculate the weight of 1 cf of wax vs a cf weight of water. I think they are close to the same. Plus or minus a few ounces.

    • @cecildean3648
      @cecildean3648 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The plywood tops would take more wax that solid wood hive body’s do to all the void spaces in plywood however.
      I would like to have some ideal as to how much wax is use in order to estimate the cost per hive.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @cecildean3648
      @cecildean3648 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was not thinking it thru. You would not be able to weight the water that boils off so you would not know how much of the finial weight was wax that had replaced water. The only other way would be to weigh the total wax in the tank and after doing several boxes weigh the remaining wax to get a average amount used. This method is call Pain in the ***. LOL

  • @MegaDavyk

    If you really want to get penetration have 2 tanks, one at about 300 deg to get the box's hot and one at 200 deg, as the box's cool down in the 2nd tank the air spaces will contract and pull the wax in deep.

      @wrfarms9741 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kamonreynolds Kamon, I dipped 12 telescoping covers I got from Albert Zook and they seemed to turn out fine. I DID reduce my wax pot temperature to between 220 - 240 degrees as a precaution. Spray paint on engines is not usually harmed by temperatures in this range so did the same. They are too big to lay flat in the tank so I stood 6 on end and dipped them for 15 minutes on one and they flipped them over to the over side for another 15 minutes. I suspect if you heat the wax up to 290 - 300 degrees, that may damage the paint.

    I just have to figure out how to get the stuff here and if I can make a deal of becoming a seller of the aquipment... just to get it here. Folks just do not do it here....
    I am thinking on a light version. I still have so few boxes I might consider it can take some time to do it. So, thinking on having a shallow metal container, only space enough to place one side of one box down at the time. It will be a smaller container to fill up. It is still done. The corners of the box will get extra time in the wax. It should be doable. Anyone following me? (=is anyone understanding what I try to say😅, slightly lost in translation. )

    Hello. I enjoy your videos. Can you help me with something that just came up. I'm in south Florida ( Palm Beach County).I'm trying to have bees build comb right in the glass jars. However moisture is building up in most of the jars. They are on top of a eight frame hive with holes drilled in a piece of plywood the jars are face down in the holes and a queen excluder under the plywood . encased in a empty box and lid. Any ideas to get rid of or why there would be moisture in the bottles? Thanks for your time Eric
