I was lucky enough to test this lens few weeks back, and I too would prefer this over the 150-600mm.

I've been using this lens for a month. Very impressed with the sharpness at 600 hand held. I had a tamron 150-600. The sigma 60-600 is heavier, but image quality is much better. I traded the tamron in for this lens and am pleased with results.

I got a 150-600 sport by accident, thought it was a contemporary 2 months ago and wondered why it feels like I have been working out at a gym! Two months in and I can probably shoot for 20 minutes without arm shake and operate the Zoom. To Zoom out point camera down, Zoom in point upwards seems to help a great deal. Have to say it seems to lack the fringing at 150 you seemed to get at 60. I think this lens really comes into its own at 300 - 600mm and gives really nice background blurring (bokeh) on nature shots and wild life shots, with subject being sharp. I live in Central Australia, very hot with dust storms so the superior build and weather sealing is probably a good idea. I shoot hand held and the image stabilisation even at 600mm has not let me down. Also slipped the lens mount handle on top and found hanging the camera off one hand and operating with the other seemed to enable better use than having the handle under the camera. All in all the 150mm difference means you have to place yourself with fore thought not being able to rely on the 60mm which is not hard in a wide open county. The image quality is not the really the issue here it's definitely weight, some people will loose shots and find moving the 150-600mm a pain in the neck and if I drop it I reckon it would rip the lens mount off the Canon Mk III I use off. If you can handle the weight the 150 won't let you down.

Thanks so much Jared for doing this review. Frankly every review I've seen of this lens, even those that were lukewarm, are showing sample images that I personally like better than those from the 150-600 lenses. I've even heard people comparing it favorably to the Canon 100-400 L II in that focal range, which is really saying something. Like you said, for those really wanting 600mm (or even further equivalent on APS-C) , are pleased with the IQ, can live with the slower aperture and DON'T want to drop like $12 grand...it makes allot of sense. The built in arca swiss plate and lighter construction is much welcomed as well.

I don't know if this applies to the 60-600 mm, but I have a 150-600 mm Sports and actually, it is possible to zoom in or out just by pulling or pushing the lens hood (also recommended by Sigma). This is much better than turning the zoom ring.

Jared, great shots. Would love to have seen any birds in flight test, but I expect the lens AF would work well with the 6D II. The 6 M$ question still lingers though: how do the 60-600 compare with the 150-600 C/S @ 600mm? Thanks.

It's amazing how sharp the lens is at 600mm. Many zooms work the other way, they get less sharp the more you zoom in, but Sigma here did a great job in delivering the best quality at the focal length most people will be using this lens at, 600mm (you're never too close to the subject when shooting wildlife). Great job Sigma! I hope the AF is on par with the image quality

In answer to your question, I sold my Sigma 150-600 Sport and purchased the 60-600 Sigma Sport in early November and haven't regretted it for an instant. It's interesting that you can get sharp images at 600mm , handheld, whilst Dustin Abbott complains that he can't get sharp images at 600mm , even when using a tripod.I use the 60mm setting for headshots and landscapes and actually find that it works extremely well given those restrictions .In a funny co-incidence , I'm actually going to take my lens to Australia Zoo tomorrow on Australia Day and will be sure to get some nice shots of young Robert Irwin, even though he's a Canon shooter :-) .

@ Jared: For the stiff zoom, check the lens manual. If it's like the Sigma 150-600mm Sport, it's certified you can grab the front element and push/ pull to zoom.
And the shape of the front element is great for that.

The problem with a Sigma 600mm f4 prime is the competition from the used market. Price it at $6000 and it is a bargain vs the current canon, but what about a 600mm f4 IS V1 used Canon lens? And people often claim Canon is loosing money on those lenses.

If this lens gives really clean sharp images at 80 or 100 mm than it would be well worth spending the money once my old 150-500 Sigma finally dies....

Ps you don’t need to use the reciprocal rule when you are using OS 2 you can half your shutter speed . It’s super cool.
You need to watch the sigma videos to understand how to use this and the C version to its best ability

Hey Jared, a bit late on a comment but for handheld this lens is awesome to use the kind of shotgun pump style of zooming when you grab the lens just below the hood and just bring it closer or further (you even gave a smooth grove for that to hold it nicer - just like the 150-600)

I'm really pleased with my Sigma 150-600 contemporary lens taking hand-held photos with a NIkon D5 at 1/400th second, ISO 6400 or 8000, of musicians on a theater stage shot from the balcony. It would be nice to be able to zoom back all the way to 60, but the extra weight of the lens (4.5 pounds vs 6 pounds) would be a considerable problem, especially if the image quality is degraded at 60.

I think I would invest in the 60-600. That range is insane. At automotive racing events, that range is super nice and it looks like the 60-600 has really good OS as well. Even though the CA is strong, you could always fix it in post if you wanted to. But even then, 60-600 is a pretty nice range for outdoors sports events.

I have the 150-600 Sport , it is a stunning lens, great images but the weight is a big issue. I have to do a lot of upper body work just to be able to hold the thing handheld. With a monopod etc for what I paid with the 1.4x it was a steal.

I bought the 150-600 c version for c100 mkii to film nature at 60 fps. I will need a polizier for it as my base iso is 800 clog and shutter 120. I will keep it at f8 as this is best for sharpness in all ranges

Jared, do the stabilization systems stack? Will IBIS, and optical IS work together to give you even more than either alone?

You mentioned how hard it is to get sharp shots when shooting through glass. I have experienced this difficulty when shooting photos of the tigers at the BREC Zoo in Baton Rouge.

Sold my 150-600C for this. I use it to shoot my sons sports/ rugby and football. Haven't had a chance to try it yet but looking forward to it this coming season.

Hey fro the design of the front hood is meant for push pull that allows you to zoom faster.

Hey Fro, is the lens weather sealed? Dust/sand resistant?

I was waiting for this review!! Great one! I wish you could take some aircraft as well.. I'm using the old contemporary and it's great, I wish the price tag was a little bit lower than 2000$ cause it's look a little bit more sharper.

I wonder if this work well for airshows, the review of the 150-600 contemporary did pretty good, this as a sports lens should focus faster is the weight of the lens a problem.

You did not cover the auto focus when using the custom settings. Does setting tighter custom limits improve AF at longer lengths?

I just had my hands on this bad boy on my canon 5d mark iii. You are absolutely right, the focusing ring is a bit too annoying and not sure if it does get smoother and quicker later on but definitely too annoying going in an out. The focusing to me was quicker and more accurate than the 150-600 sport.
it was very sharp at 600. at 60, i didn't notice anything too terrible but it wasn't that great either. would be interested to see how this does indoor in darker environment.

I am waiing for the L-Mount version of this lens with maybe with a few tweaks alongside the 70-200mm f/2.8 & f/4, maybe a lighter version considering it's for mirrorless system. Good range of Tele on L-Mount Alliance will boost it's capabilities even more as opposed to using MC-21 Adapter and be limited with AF-S only.
