Great video! I think Matt sounds a little bit closer, mostly thanks to the Micro POG, to achieve the “Mystery Pedal“. Just for the record, Scott did reveal what was in his Zap Box, it's an Octavia Fuzz from Roger Mayer, cloned by one of his friend! Thanks for the fun guys!!
This is interesting because I think that the closest sound to the band is actually in between. Matts tone is closer, but if you made it fatter like Rabea's it would be spot on. Nicely done
so glad you did a sounds like on Rival Sons, been my favourite band since their debut and definitely deserve so much more recognition (which they shall hopefully get after their tour with sabbath)!!
Matt was definitely closer, but both rigs sounded good (I'm a big Sons fan). New format is cool. The competition vids that Rob and Lee do are often their most fun and it adds a cool element to this series too. Definitely something worth doing again in future.
I really enjoyed this new concept guys. The old one was great too but I think the "vs" brings new life to it. It's good to see the similarities and differences from 2 points of view. Great video!
Rabea had this one in the bag! not because of his mega afro but because it just sounded closest to me, sorry Matt but your magnificent beard was not enough to snatch victory this time... but i will request Radiohead and Soundgarden for two good sound likes
Love this VS. format. . Adding loads of fun to the Sounds like show. Fans get two rigs. At the end pick the best pieces see how you would put them together. Great Rigs, Rabea's sounds bigger, louder. That slash pedal is amazing.
more gear, more fun and more of guitar and pedal heaven!!! please, please, please stay with this format!! everything is more interesting and just more of good guitar and pedal stuff... Great job!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bea's tone sounded nicer because it was fuller, though I think Matt was closer to Scott Holiday. However, I don't know how Bea's tone would work in a full mix because it is so big, whereas Matt's tone should work in a mix.
I like the versus idea a lot. Any chance of seeing more "Sounds Likes" focused on bassists? Plenty of bassists with unique tones that would let you play with gear like Simon Gallup, Chris Wolstenholme, Geddy Lee (Moving Pictures-era), Justin Chancellor, Jeff Caxide, etc.
Absolutely love the Vs format!! makes it so much better because we get more Ideas!! You could call it "Mimic Battles" budget edition (rich man edition for no budget) or something like... "Megadeth mimic battles budget edition"
I love the 'vs' format, really cool idea. Keep up the awesome work! Also, Matt had a more authentic selection of gear I thought, but I preferred Bea's tone. Listening to the songs you guys tried to sound like, you both did great, but Bea I think got a bit closer. Well done, chaps!
Loved the format. Suggestion, since most comments are about who you should do next and it's hard to judge who the crowd thinks came closer- Have a poll in the cards feature that TH-cam offers so viewers can vote without having to comment. Cheers!
theyve done something like that before... like years ago they did guns n roses without busting the bank, and then recently did by busting the bank.. two different vids.
You dont seem to under stand what i mean lets say Mat Dosent have a Buget and Rebea Dose and they do it in the Versus format like they did in his video while they both try and sound like the same artist
Sounded great, I like the format, competition always pushes people a bit further in making the right choice, and the viewers have more options to choose from in the end, and to debate about. Also adding the reveal suprise faces moment to the next videos is mandatory, imho.
Yeah man, I'd definitely say that the two Sound Like's that I really want to happen are Megadeth (Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman) and George Lynch (Lynch Mob)
I really enjoyed the new format, hope you guys get around to doing more of it c: I'm not aware of the artist so i don't know who was closer but i reckon they both sounded class :D
Fender Standard Stratocaster - £507 (in black) Egnater Tweaker 15 - £430 (in an attempt not to use a marshall DSL) MXR Phase 90 - £97 Fulltone Catalyst Distortion Generator - £80 Boss CH1 Super Chorus - £80 Boss RV6 Reverb - £130 Boss DD3 Delay - £115 Grand Total : £1439 if matt isn't focusing on the rhythm guitarist he can get a Gibson Les Paul Custom for the other guitarist and make it a black one
This new format is awesome guys! I think Matt won this one! Great choice doing Scott Holiday. He really has some great fuzz/classic rock tones. Great job!
Thanks Rabea and Matt for picking Rival Sons, and I love the new format. Gives me more to think about and consider. Total cop out answer, but I think Rabea had a closer tone on some, but Matt on others. I'd love to see Smashing Pumpkins, and two relatively unknown bands Reignwolf, and Little Hurricane. Plz check them out. Thanks guys, the show was good to begin with, but keeps getting better!
TMmodify John McCrea uses an acoustic guitar plugged into a small fender electric guitar amp, and Xan McCurdy uses a semi hollow guild with a fender amp.
Thanks for this guys. I'm a massive Black Keys fan but had never heard of Rival Sons before this video. Have now downloaded all of their albums on Apple music and have my listening/riff learning sorted for the next few days. Oh, and Bea sounded the closest with a thicker and darker sounding tone more reminiscent of the actiual tracks. Might need to finally pick up one of those Gretsch Streamliners now though..
Matt win this fight. I don't know the band soI just compared wiht my first listen to the band, and Matt definitely sound the closest ! Can you try to sound like Ritchie Blackmoore next time?
Yeah, just watched/listened to Rival Sons "Electric Man" at amazon artist lounge video. Matt was closer. In the song, this riff is being played on guitar AND bass, and I think Matt's version would sit in the mix with the bass more like the original.
Sound like Rush . And yes, his tone has gone through changes over the years but what I'd LOVE to see/hear is his tone particularly from the Grace Under Pressure disc. Those opening chords from " Red Sector A" get me every single time !
Only just found this video. Love all your videos and I hope you do more of both style videos. Watching on my telly with a Sonos soundbar I'd say Rabea had the best tone, but it could be different live. Keep up the good work guys 🤘🤘
Love the concept, this gives two options for rig ideas instead of one. I call it a win. As for who won, Matt clearly took round 1, rounds 2 and 3 are too hard close to call. Both of you had elements of Scott's sound, but didn't quite get there. To be fair, the only way to do him justice is to bust the bank, the man uses two Orange amps and two fully loaded pedal boards. Also, just call it Bloodsport.
Awesome idea! Hard to say who sounded closer. Bea's sounded great as a stand alone tone but maybe Matt's would have sounded closer with all the other instruments included. Great idea!Keep it up guys!
I don't know the band so can't say who is closer in emulation, but for some reason Rabea's tone was thicker while being less artificial or grainy. But love the show and the love the new approaches. Keep experimenting with the show!
Matt gets my vote as the winner. I think you should call the Versus format shows "The Sound Off" or the "Sound Like Showdown". Please do Soundgarden, Pixies or Radiohead. Love the show gents!
They play guitar. So, they can play bass. Plus, Matt has played bass on multiple "sounds like" videos. The problem is they don't do "sounds like" for individual artists. They did RHCP already.
Probably not. Flea is regarded as one of the greatest bassists of all time. I also don't think it's worth doing videos that highlight bass players/equipment, because bass players tend to be cheap. They buy a Jazz Bass and replace the strings annually. Use the same $200 amp and buy like 2 pedals their whole life.
Matt's setup killed it in "Electric Man" (near perfect), was slightly better in "Open My Eyes" and Rabea won by far in "Hollw Bones". My choice is Matt's gear - although I think Rebea's picks were more versatile. Thanks, guys. Rival Sons have been my favorite active band since I first heard them in 2014.
Awesome IDEA! Please Sound Like the nameless ghouls from "Ghost B.C." So many Tasty riffs to choose from! It'd be interesting in a "versus" format as well....but then they'd have to decide between rhythm and solo guitarist parts.
For what its worth Rabea and Matt, I think that there is a way over looked and under rated player that deserves a proper nod for both his playing abilities and his tones of that era. That would be Mr Matthias Jabs of the Scorpions. Just a thought and my two cents. Thanks you two for the amazing videos, gives us all a better understanding for what almost all guitar players live for, tone chasing, that holy grail of sound in our heads! Thanks again to you both for all your awesome work!
Nice one guys, loving the versus idea! How about "Sound Like ... Without Busting The Bank: Battle Schools" or "Sound Like... Without Busting The Bank: Online Multiplayer RPG!"? ;P I definitely think you should show the "reveal" too, that would be cool and funny. I'd say Rabea won this one. You both had nice tones, but I'd say Matt's were a bit too thin sounding (a bit more Jack White than Scott Holiday), maybe because of the 15w vs 30w. Well done guys, looking forward to more of these.
Does anybody actually comment on these videos anymore, instead of the usual pushy requests?
yes i hate read only request
Sound like godsmack
Your so right. Oh, could you shut the F**k up?
This is interesting because I think that the closest sound to the band is actually in between. Matts tone is closer, but if you made it fatter like Rabea's it would be spot on. Nicely done
so glad you did a sounds like on Rival Sons, been my favourite band since their debut and definitely deserve so much more recognition (which they shall hopefully get after their tour with sabbath)!!

but i will request Radiohead and Soundgarden for two good sound likes
RADIOHEAD! I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR WEEKS ON END
Shidonlad's V&G l
Love this VS. format. . Adding loads of fun to the Sounds like show. Fans get two rigs. At the end pick the best pieces see how you would put them together. Great Rigs, Rabea's sounds bigger, louder. That slash pedal is amazing.
more gear, more fun and more of guitar and pedal heaven!!! please, please, please stay with this format!!
everything is more interesting and just more of good guitar and pedal stuff...
Great job!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was fun! I like the format :) also gonna echo others on the request for a Sounds Like on The Smashing Pumpkins.
Sound Like DEEP PURPLE(Ritchie blackmore era)
You guys should definitely do this more. I loved it!
"Let us know what you think in the comments below"
Comments:
"[a list of bands I like]"
"[a list of bands I like] BY busting the bank"
StueyDoo sounds like mudhoney
love this episode, love the Rival Sons! Sounds awesome. Either rig sounds great and I'd love either one just for some nice gritty sounds
I'm a huge fan of this band, this one was great! Matt won 1 and 2 round, and bea 3 round.
Loved this concept, I would love to see more of these head to head challenges!
Bea sound was great, but in what regards souding closer, Matt was way way ahead.
Matt wins easy
Renan Beltrão yeah because that POG is a must have for that rig.
Love the VS spin on this. Would love to see more like this. Just makes the sounds Sounds Like show even more entertaining!
Rival Sons is such an underrated band
Love this band. Well played.
Bea's tone sounded nicer because it was fuller, though I think Matt was closer to Scott Holiday. However, I don't know how Bea's tone would work in a full mix because it is so big, whereas Matt's tone should work in a mix.
Best Sounds Like Ever.
a) because I've suggested Rival Sons in the past
b) because you nailed the sound
c) love the format
Keep it up.
Know fuck all about the band but I prefer bea's tone tbh
Same here
yea it seems to be the better one of the two..possibly cause of the amp??since the guitars are similar
The octave fuzz has a thicker meatier tone and reverb has a huge influence on bea's tone I think the guitar and amp are small players in this.
yea you're probably right...
They opened for Black Sabbath here in Santiago a few months ago
I seriously cant get enough of Sounds Like videos.
It would be nice to hear a sample of the actual track after you two play so that we can compare to help decide who sounds closer. Thanks!
Love the versus idea boys, keep it up!!
Round 1 - Matt definitely
Round 2 - Bea
Round 3 - Tie, maybe Bea edged it...
Love the format!
I reckon Rabea won it for me, the noise each time Matt picked really annoyed me
Round is bea in my opinion and round 2 is for matt
In regards to liking a tone. Rabea sounds better. But in regards to matching the tone, it's an easy win for Matt.
New format was ace, definitely think filming the reveals will be good to see
I think a "Sound like Gary Clark Jr." would be cool
hEEEEEY, this format is SWEET! double the gear, double the fun, competition drives progress!
Excellent idea, don't forget about your 4 string icons 🤘🤘
That'd be awesome, I'd love to see one for Chris or Geddy
Absolutely love the Vs format!! makes it so much better because we get more Ideas!!
You could call it "Mimic Battles" budget edition (rich man edition for no budget) or something like...
"Megadeth mimic battles budget edition"
I suggest making a special EVH episode with 2 rigs: an all evh products rig vs. a non-evh rig
So the non-EVH rig would just be like a Charvel into a Marshall or something like what Ed did in the early days?
I think Ed used Kramer’s or something like that
I love the 'vs' format, really cool idea. Keep up the awesome work! Also, Matt had a more authentic selection of gear I thought, but I preferred Bea's tone. Listening to the songs you guys tried to sound like, you both did great, but Bea I think got a bit closer. Well done, chaps!
Never heard of the band, but Rabea's rig just sounds better
Loved the format. Suggestion, since most comments are about who you should do next and it's hard to judge who the crowd thinks came closer- Have a poll in the cards feature that TH-cam offers so viewers can vote without having to comment.
Cheers!
heres an idea. With Out Bursting the Bank Vs Bursting the Bank
great idea!
Thanks Yang :)
so you know who i am eh? glad to hear oh and you're welcome :)
theyve done something like that before... like years ago they did guns n roses without busting the bank, and then recently did by busting the bank.. two different vids.
You dont seem to under stand what i mean lets say Mat Dosent have a Buget and Rebea Dose and they do it in the Versus format like they did in his video while they both try and sound like the same artist
Really like the way you did this, gives you two rigs to pick and choose from.
I say Matt... I'm liking this versus concept!
i wanna see sound like versus - Stray Cats (Brian Sezter) without busting the bank
Sounded great, I like the format, competition always pushes people a bit further in making the right choice, and the viewers have more options to choose from in the end, and to debate about. Also adding the reveal suprise faces moment to the next videos is mandatory, imho.
SOUNDS LIKE EVH !!!! or Judas Priest
the problem with Judas Priest is Glenn and K.K use Hamer and andertons don't have Hamer guitars
But, they can use guitars with EMG's and Floyd Rose (or Kahler)
EVH, please.
F
YEEEEEESSSSSSS The brown sound !!!!!
Love these Sounds Like's and the head-to-head works well, keep it up guys!
Sound like Megadeth or Ritchie Blackmore, anyone?
ThaBadayuss i second this motion it shall b
ThaBadayuss love megadeth yet dont hate metallica
Preferably Ritchie Blackmore.
Yeah, sound like Ritchie Blackmore is more what I meant with sound like Deep Purple. I will now proceed to edit my original comment.
Yeah man, I'd definitely say that the two Sound Like's that I really want to happen are Megadeth (Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman) and George Lynch (Lynch Mob)
Great idea guys. Y'all guys are special. Great team and great competitors
sounds like volbeat would be amazing!!!
I really enjoyed the new format, hope you guys get around to doing more of it c:
I'm not aware of the artist so i don't know who was closer but i reckon they both sounded class :D
It's been requested before, but I'll mention it again. Sounds like The Smashing Pumpkins.
Fender Standard Stratocaster - £507 (in black)
Egnater Tweaker 15 - £430 (in an attempt not to use a marshall DSL)
MXR Phase 90 - £97
Fulltone Catalyst Distortion Generator - £80
Boss CH1 Super Chorus - £80
Boss RV6 Reverb - £130
Boss DD3 Delay - £115
Grand Total : £1439
if matt isn't focusing on the rhythm guitarist he can get a Gibson Les Paul Custom for the other guitarist and make it a black one
bbrady418 oh yeah!
bbrady418 Get a rat.....put it in a cage......
Two guitar band with really unique tones, would be great for a standard, non-"VS" episode. Does Anderton's stock Reverend?
Troy Siddle Yep they actually do
This new format is awesome guys! I think Matt won this one! Great choice doing Scott Holiday. He really has some great fuzz/classic rock tones. Great job!
Sound like Electric Wizard or Uncle Acid!
Leschi Horror uncle acid would be rad!
Leschi Horror I second Uncle Acid!!!
P90's > Basic audio spooky tooth fuzz > fender tweed is the rig kevin starrs uses
Don't forget about the stoner lord himself, Matt Pike from Sleep/High On Fire
Thanks Rabea and Matt for picking Rival Sons, and I love the new format. Gives me more to think about and consider. Total cop out answer, but I think Rabea had a closer tone on some, but Matt on others. I'd love to see Smashing Pumpkins, and two relatively unknown bands Reignwolf, and Little Hurricane. Plz check them out. Thanks guys, the show was good to begin with, but keeps getting better!
You didn't have an Orange Crush CR-120???
Please do sounds like Cake
Andrew Hamblen Gotta have some Cake, man. Cause, we are building a religion...😀
sounds like cake ? greatest idea ever, the guitar tones are sooooooooo good. lightly driven badass.
Oh, and Bea sounded the closest with a thicker and darker sounding tone more reminiscent of the actiual tracks. Might need to finally pick up one of those Gretsch Streamliners now though..
This is the moment. Sound like Karnivool. That's all.
YES!
Alvaro Llana Garcia ive been asking for like a year now, it needs to happen
They'd have to get someone to do a bass sounds like along with the guitars. I second it.
Me too..constantly asking
Versus is a great way to make an already entertaining concept even more entertaining!!!
Matt win this fight. I don't know the band soI just compared wiht my first listen to the band, and Matt definitely sound the closest !
Can you try to sound like Ritchie Blackmoore next time?
Deep Purple era or Rainbow era?
No matter, maybe both ^^
I'm not a fan of Rainbow's era, I prefer Deep Purple by far, but both can be very interesting ^^
Yeah, just watched/listened to Rival Sons "Electric Man" at amazon artist lounge video. Matt was closer. In the song, this riff is being played on guitar AND bass, and I think Matt's version would sit in the mix with the bass more like the original.
Bryan Vasnier I agree. sounds more like the album. cleaner than rabea's tone.
loved the new versus format!! please keep it!
Sounds like Opeth or Plini!
Finally a sounds like Scott Holiday! Been waiting for a Rival Sons episode from you guys for a while! Do RUSH next!
Sound like Free/Paul Kossoff and Mike Bloomfield?
Gaming Guitar Player I need a Mike Bloomfield episode so much
i saw in my local guitar store a second hand paul kossoff signature les paul for £11,000+ so it's gonna have to be a les paul
Sound like Rush . And yes, his tone has gone through changes over the years but what I'd LOVE to see/hear is his tone particularly from the Grace Under Pressure disc. Those opening chords from " Red Sector A" get me every single time !
Do sound like GOJIRA or Periphery without busting the bank please!
Love love love the new format!
Please try and sound like the Cure, Joy Division, Obituary, and My Bloody Valentine.
I'm here before Hank Hill. I have now peaked in life.
Only just found this video. Love all your videos and I hope you do more of both style videos. Watching on my telly with a Sonos soundbar I'd say Rabea had the best tone, but it could be different live. Keep up the good work guys 🤘🤘
rammstein pls :D
YES!!
I loved the format. I've never heard of this band before, but it's certainly one I will check out.
Only heard of this band cause they supported black sabbath
been around a while. have like 5 albums and an ep out
Kim Jong Un I saw them open for Sabbath on The End tour
Kim Jong Un i was there and i saw them as a support band
same thing, saw them on their last show
Saw them open for Sabbath in Birmingham, can't say I enjoyed them though.
Absolutely love the idea of a Sounds Like Shootout! Great work, gents.
Sound like Andy Summers of The Police
Can't tell you everything you'd need, but the most important thing you'd need for that is an Electro Harmonix Electric Mistress.
Fil Piovano and a tele
Love the concept, this gives two options for rig ideas instead of one. I call it a win. As for who won, Matt clearly took round 1, rounds 2 and 3 are too hard close to call. Both of you had elements of Scott's sound, but didn't quite get there. To be fair, the only way to do him justice is to bust the bank, the man uses two Orange amps and two fully loaded pedal boards.
Also, just call it Bloodsport.
Sound like Rush, The Police and The Eagles!!
Awesome idea! Hard to say who sounded closer. Bea's sounded great as a stand alone tone but maybe Matt's would have sounded closer with all the other instruments included. Great idea!Keep it up guys!
doesn't using the Slash Octave Fuzz break the not using someone else's signature gear rule?
I think Bea is disqualified! haha
Great change to the format. Love it.
Matt looks and even sounds a little bit like Lindybeige lol
ive been thinking that for ages
Victor Ramos I don't know who that is but I assume he's awesome and really handsome ;-)
Well he is awesome...
Kinda looks like an older much less handsome version of you ;)
Matt Hornby he does historical and military videos on TH-cam. I never noticed the similarity but there is something in the comparison
I always thought he looks like Judd Trump (the snooker player)
without busting v by busting would be amazing. I love this new format. Keep at it.
Let's try again...
Hope to see a "sound like Type O Negative" someday...
I don't know the band so can't say who is closer in emulation, but for some reason Rabea's tone was thicker while being less artificial or grainy. But love the show and the love the new approaches. Keep experimenting with the show!
Sound like Rory Gallagher please
Matt gets my vote as the winner. I think you should call the Versus format shows "The Sound Off" or the "Sound Like Showdown". Please do Soundgarden, Pixies or Radiohead. Love the show gents!
sounds like RUSH?
star man Don't force them
afterall they have freewill....
HA GOT EEEEEM
You've only asked that, like, 2112 times!
mpactdesignmedia don't worry, they've had their time in the limelight!
Short Tom - probably some Fly by Night outfit anyway
mpactdesignmedia anyway they're busy moving pictures right now so try again later
I am not familiar with the bad but I preferred Rabea's sound. Love this new format, keep it up! (Hi from Montreal, Canada!)
Sound like Dinosaur Jr
This format is a great idea! Please more!
Rabea wins for me. Matt sounded a bit too compressed.
Please do Sleep /High on Fire sounds like!
GREAT rock band. Thanks for covering this one.
Sound like Lemmy or Flea
the problem is they can't get a rickenbacker for lemmy on this budget
Lewis Mitchell no, the problem is neither if them play bass.
They play guitar. So, they can play bass. Plus, Matt has played bass on multiple "sounds like" videos. The problem is they don't do "sounds like" for individual artists. They did RHCP already.
But do you think either of them could slap like Flea? Probably not.
Wow, that POG pushes that to the next level for Matt.
Sound like Slayer
literally, nothing like slayer though haha
what you on about, I'm requesting them to do slayer?
your mom
Jesus
Kerry and Jeff era of course! cos it's more iconic than the Kerry and Gary era
Matt's setup killed it in "Electric Man" (near perfect), was slightly better in "Open My Eyes" and Rabea won by far in "Hollw Bones". My choice is Matt's gear - although I think Rebea's picks were more versatile.
Thanks, guys. Rival Sons have been my favorite active band since I first heard them in 2014.
sound like weezer
really enjoyed this one. great job guys... ala "Sound Like Shootout" format is a cool twist.
Sound like ghost??
Sorry rabea I think Matt sounds closest.
Sounds like Type o Negative
Loved the new format!
New ideas to sounds like! I enjoyed it! maybe have the guys run around the store at the same time to really make things interesting!
Yessss!!! I've been waiting for this one.
