That's why con-artists(confidence artists) are a thing. If you were some random Soviet at the camp and you saw this guy that looked vaguely like the enemy, but didn't seem to give a fuck skiing into your position, you would just assume that he's some messenger that wore a similar uniform and not pay much attention to it.

Another great Finnish soldier I recommend checking out Lauri Törni. He fought for Finland against the Russians then joined the German SS to continue fighting the Russians. After he left Germany to go to the US changing his name to Larry Thorne where he served in the 5th, 7th, and 10th special forces groups along with the 11th airborne AKA Arctic Angels out of Alaska. The man was so badass that the Sabaton song “Soldier of Three Armies” is about him.

Imagine being part of that Soviet patrol whose camp he skied into tho. You're sitting there by the fire, trying to warm your insides with some vodka and hot tea, and from out of nowhere, in pops this wild-eyed madman who babbles incomprehensibly at what seems like 3x speed for a moment, and then, upon realizing you are in fact _not_ his compatriots, bolts off again like a rocket on skis before you can get over your initial bemusement and grab your Mosin...

The story behind the Ozzy incident is that people were tossing some things on stage for him to bite because the music video for Crazy Train implied that he bit the head off of a bird. So he panders to the crowd, picks up a bat which he thought was fake, bit the head off of the bat, quickly realized that he just bit off the head of an actual bat, the news goes wild on the story, and Ozzy had to get a rabies shot.

The meeting was about smoothing over relations and he had 3 live doves as a sign of peace. He was extremely drunk and bored and bit a head off one dove and spit it out on the table and then did the same to the second before being thrown out. The bat incident took place a year afterward.

There is a bunch of interesting and cool things that came out of the winter war and the continuation war, people like Aimo Koivunen, Simo Häyhä, Lauri Allan Törni and one of the most interesting non combat related things imo, which is a recording off Hitler speaking in his normal voice and not projecting because he wasn't supposed to be taped because it was a private conversation between him and Field Marshal Carl Gustaf Mannerheim

The Fat Electrician is really good to watch, highly informative while being witty and entertaining, to top it off he is also quick paced and avoids hammering the same point in a drawn out manner, instead breaking it down to a simple recall such as in here "Because Meth", he knows his viewers are not 6 years old and treats them as such.
A great video to watch of his is the "Cheese Bunkers" and he also points out how it's a great example of the butterfly effect.

  • @jm-holm
    @jm-holm ปีที่แล้ว +31

There are actually quite a few remarkable Finns from those wars, but unfortunately there's not really any English language content on the majority of them.
The known ones are Simo Häyhä, Lauri Törni and now Aimo for his funny story.
Of course there's Mannerheim himself as well but people know very little about him despite his career and life which is like a fairy tale all on its own. From being thrown out of cadet school to rising to a general of the imperial Russian army and fighting the Japanese in the east, fighting the Germans in the west, being sent on a spy mission traveling on horseback for 9000 km through China while teaching the Dalai Lama to shoot a pistol. Being an honor guard next to the Russian tsar at his coronation, traveling through Russia in full dress uniform during the revolution back to Finland, winning the Finnish civil war for the whites and then refusing to accept dictatorial powers over his country. 20 years AFTER that came WW2 where he successfully led the defense of Finland against the USSR twice over before serving as the president of the country until his health failed him and passing away soon after as the greatest Finn who ever lived.
There's also the greatest non-German ace of all time, Ilmari Juutilainen (there may be some vid on him) and the second most successful Finnish pilot Hans Wind. And a lot more of those pilots, Finland produced a massive amount of aces, by far the highest pilot to ace ratio of any nation in the war.
Then there are leaders like General Pajari who was awarded the Mannerheim cross twice and under whose command smaller Finnish forces smashed far superior Soviet forces to pieces.
General Lagus and his armored division that was thrown into the desperate defensive battles in 1944 to stop the Soviet offensive and performed miracles, among other things achieving a 10:1 kill ratio in the STUGs against Soviet tanks and assault guns.
General Nenonen of the artillery who revolutionized the entire fire observer and fire directing system creating something so good it's practically used until this day, which allowed the small Finnish artillery to focus far greater firepower on a single point with more accuracy and speed than any other army in the world was capable of at the time. Never mind the Soviets.
And there are operations like building a "fake city" off the coast of Helsinki when the Soviets were planning to level the capital in order to force Finland out of the war, which was so successful only 5% of the bombs dropped during these massive raids struck the city.
Or the related operation where Finnish bombers took off during one of these Soviet raids, infiltrated returning Soviet bomber formations and followed them to their home airfields, waited for the Soviets to land and then bombed them on the ground.
Countless events and people I wish people would know about.

Viljam Pylkäs is one of those lesser known chads as well. Practically every Finnish person knows the character he's based on, but the most badass thing he did was killing 83 soviets with SMG in a single firefight until his gun overheated and the enemy retreated. Finnish army called pervitin "Höökipulveri" literally meaning "Attack Powder". Despite the name, majority thought that the best use of it was to try to escape the enemy rather than use it to as "pick me up" before fighting. For this reason long range patrols and sabotage teams were given the stuff as backup if everything else fails. The situation that Aimo and his squad were in was exactly what they thought it was usefull for.

It's confirmed that Ozzy did actually bite the head off a bat after somebody threw it onstage, but he thought it was probably a rubber bat...it wasn't...

Here's a video on what it was like to be on those long range patrols: "JMS WW2 FINNISH LONG RANGE PATROLS AND AMPHETAMINE". Here's one soldier who took part in those patrols and later made a career in the US military as one of the so called Marttinen's Men: "Maailmanmestari, marskin ritari, lieutenant-colonel Olavi Alakulppi". And here's a documentary of the most famous of those soldiers listed among the Marttinen's Men: "Törni - Sotilaan tarina (A Soldier's Story) English Subtitles".

I believe and this is if my memory serves right Ozzy Osbourne bit off mostly stunt creatures but there was one instance were an actual bat flew into the area and he caught it (or they gave him a real bad I'm not sure which one memories little fuzzy) and he did bite the head off of that

Ozzy had a part of his set where he'd bite the head off of a rubber bat prop. One time, a fan threw a real bat onstage, and Ozzy, too high to notice it was not the prop bat, bit its head off. At least, according to interviews with Ozzy and other people who were on stage or in the audience near enough to see it happen, including the guy who threw the bat.

The Pervitin pill container is small and individual pills are even smaller. Aimo had never seen a pill, so of course he does not know what the size of one pill is or how many are there in that tube. Those pills also were quite old, seeing maybe 2-3 years of warm summers and freezing winters, some moisture too. Perhaps it all looked line one big pill, instead of a dozen small pills.

The Ozzy/bat story happened... someone tossed a bat on stage, he thought it was a fake rubber one since it was stunned and not moving... so he snatched it up and bit the head off it.
After finding out it was real he wound up having to get rabies shots just in case.
It was a one-off happening and he was as disgusted about it as everyone else.

Now I know why my grandfather was so anti drugs... he was a soldier in the finnish winter war. One story I've been told about what happened to him during the war was that he was talking to a person in a sauna. After some time in the sauna to warm himself up, then he saw that the man next to him was dead. .... he also told us that the Russian soldier had been drinking alcohol the day before , so they were drunk or had a hangover when the finns attacked with molotov cocktails and gunshots. Horrible war.... 😞
